Best to to see how this works is to 'hover' your mouse over the 'research points' part of the UI (user interface) ingame - default screen it will be in the bottom right of the top left box to the right of the industry one (if that makes sense!).

Wiki said:
Research Points = (literacy points + clergy points + clerk points + national rank points) * (1 + plurality multiplier + techs + events + difficulty multiplier)

The thing players can do is to make sure they have 4% clergy. The game says 2% is optimal but 4% is actually optimal. Also have enough clerks to fill the factories to the maximum which is 20% of the workforce. 2000 clerks for a level 1 factory with 10 000 workers in total. More factories with clerks is the ultimate strategy to boost research after you have made sure you have enough clergy. Focus on clergy first since they are needed to educate clerks.

The other thing is the techs which gives you RP bonuses and choosing plurality and RP in random events.

You also get 1.5 RP for being a great power, 1.25RP for secondary power, 1RP if you are civilized and none for uncivs

2 to 4% clergy gives no RP benefits, only literacy benefits.

It depends on the literacy of the target/acquisition - is my understanding.

Fair enough to think that, using your example, Sokoto, will not have a very high overall level of literacy, but within the nation itself, there will be differing literacy levels in each 'state'.

Right. So if you are playing a country that already has high literacy there really isn't a need to go above 2%.
