From reading the description and just looking at the building icons, hydroponics farms are obviously environmentally sealed off greenhouses that do not rely on soil--local or otherwise. So how does a "lush," "bleak," or even "irradiated" planet affect their productivity? Is there a decent hand-waving explanation for this?

In my head-cannon, hydroponic farms are used alongside normal farming, where applicable. So an irradiated wasteland means ONLY hydroponic farming works (so food production is limited by how big your domes are, how much money you want to spend on building them, how hostile the terrain is, etc), whereas on normal planets (no modifiers), hydroponics are supplemented by normal, intensive farming. Lush, to me, would mean that more food is grown outside, with hydroponics reserved for seed generation or difficult to grow plant types.

Domes are a populøar sci-fi staple, and thus a good and recognizable element. I dont think every icon in the game needs to reflect every possibility, as that would be pretty crazy.
