Specifically, a rebel empire carved out of my opponent. We were both attacking him but independently. I found that I had taken a province that would be useful to the rebel empire. It's to my advantage to let him have it, it costs me effectively nothing as I've grabbed far more territory than I'll actually be able to keep in the peace anyway.
