These guys (dynasty 20084) belonged to a great Norse-Gael dynasty who ruled parts of the British Isles around Mann, Dublin and the Hebrides. Currently they start with some weird cultural mixes, such as the grandfather, father and son in 1066 having different cultures. Some are Irish, some are Scots, some are Norwegian. Seems quite random, and pretty confusing. You could change their dynasty name to Ivarætten, the Norse name. That isn't too important, though, and Uí Ímair is certainly the better known version.

As they're only around at the start of the game and rule Norwegian culture provinces, I'd suggest making them Norwegian culture. As we don't have a proper way to represent the Norse-Gaels then I think this would be good; they certainly shouldn't be Scottish, and there are tons of Irish characters anyway. Arguably there are only two great Norse-Gael clans left by 1066 -- these and the Crovans -- so it seems an ideal solution. Also, these areas would likely have remained Norse had the Norse-Gaels not been assimilated or usurped and replaced with Anglo-Norman rulers. Gaelic and Old Norse names are used interchangeably for the most part, but it does seem a nice gameplay decision to go with Norwegian due to province culture (as I've mentioned) and the fact that the Irish and Scots will usually conquer the remaining Norse-Gael provinces quite quickly, after which they will tend to change culture. By having them as Norwegian, this will add a bit more flavor (which is not inaccurate) and also give the player something of a challenge as a nice alternative to the Crovans, who historically usurped the Uí Ímair and conquered Mann.

So, we'll start with the two characters in the Norwegian file and then work down.

Regarding ID 159291 above, I don't see any point in changing Sigtrygg's culture and dynasty when he gets married. He's a bastard and has already started his wife's line of sons, who are Welsh and of her dynasty. If he has any future children (which is unlikely anyway) they'll be of the dynasty of whomever he marries. You don't just stop being Norwegian and start being Welsh.

This would seem consistent with House Crovan, as I think they were recently made Norwegian from being a funny mix of various cultures. Speaking of which, there is a single member of House Crovan who still isn't Norwegian. He's a Scot, and shouldn't be:

His parents and siblings are all Norwegian, as he probably ought to be.

Finally, it may be worth linking up Gudrød_Godfrey for Norwegian culture. I wasn't aware the two were cognates, but having done a bit of research into these families it seems that Gudrød, Godred, Gofraid and Godfrey are often interlinked and used as alternatives for one another, depending on which language is being used.

An elite changing the place-names so totally is utterly implausible. You're imagining something like the French domination in England. Are English place-names 90%+ French? ;)

No, but I'm allowing for a large degree of influence on Norse on the Isles, just pulling back from the claim that it was total or majority. I don't think then that French in England would be an adequate comparison. But French has had an impact on how many English place-names were pronounced and spelt. I'm just considering that Norse social organisation would have been different, and that many new settlements would have been established by the Norse which would explain the need for new toponyms. This is why I asked about non-minor placenames, as they may have reflected Gaelic social organisation which was still, as in Ireland, remarkably rural.

Also Hebridean society didn't have elites in the sense you are thinking of. Social divisions in the islands were within households rather than between them; between them there were flexible patron-client accommodations subject to political fortune. The Somerled guys had relatively small territorial bases and relied on the consent and enthusiasm of subject kindreds (if they didn't have it there was no rebellio, they would just be weaker).

What if we were to consider warriors vs tillers, or even sea-goers versus tillers? That could easily replace an elite model once we accept that the former was likely to hold political power.

I think btw we both recognize the claims of Irish descent of the descendents of Somerled to be fictitious. Basically, the Hebrides were poor warrior farms for Irish and Scottish rulers; Norse culture had no writing and no literary class at the time; almost all of their neighbours spoke Scottish or Irish Gaelic. Gaelicization was inevitable.

I'd prefer contentious. I doubt Somerled knew in truth who his ancestors were. But it is still rather an interesting point that his forgery was believed. I think an interesting comparison would be the survival of Norn in the North, which would have been put under similar pressure, yet there are significant different factors though. Historical accounts exist of Norn, it survived 400 years after being subjected to foreign-cultured rule, so it had to contend with educational reforms, which Norse on the Norse Isles wouldn't. I can only imagine that the reason one survived so late and the other didn't, is because the latter was never so dominant. Norse culture indeed had a literary class of skalds and writing by the 13th century, so there must some other reason why it didn't survive, and I think the logical suggestion is the weakness of Norse in the Western Isles at the time. I accept your arguments are illustrative, but I still cannot view them as convincing.

I don't think language had much to do with their attractiveness (if anything similarities between the two languages would have been bad!). The tradition of Hebridean mercenaries is just a continuation of use of soldiers from Norse forts in Ireland.

Similarities wouldn't have been bad at all. We're talking about early modern Irish when both languages would have still been remarkably similar. I don't think you can say the tradition was just a continution of use of soldiers from Norse forts without recognising the argument that most of those Norse forts could speak Irish or at the very least a Norse-Irish pidgin (gíc-goc the annalists delighfully called it). The lack of a cultural barrier would have been one of the reasons why the preferred them over the readily available Norman mercenaries who were common in the early 13th (and of which there is evidence from the early 12th century). I doubt they could have so readily integrated into the Irish social system were they Norse cultured, and I would doubt their genealogical claims from the three Collas, or from Aodh Athlamhan, would have even been considered were they Norse speaking.

I don't think you are making much headway on the Norse versus French comparison; the reality is that evidence against Gaelic continuity in the Outer Hebrides at any rate is overwhelming. Medieval Hebrideans are seamen AND tillers. They do both. :)

It would have been bad because it would be harder to maintain a difference between the ruler and his senior soldiers, which does appear to be the case later when a number of Irish polities descended from Scottish soliders emerge.

Truly epic. Great find. :)

Now... add them. ;)

Great find indeed :)

I've actually been working on the Uí Ímar tree for little over a week now, (after this discussion was originally started), but I hit a minor set back yesterday. (I accidentally saved over a much newer file with an older one, It's not a good idea to start modding after having spent the entire day paiting a small apartment while having a few beers xD)

Gonna look over this tomorrow and link it up with what I've already done if anyone is interested :)

EDIT: Also, I found a possible connection between the oldest Ragnall (the one who died in 921), and Ivar of Waterford.
Seems to be a bit speculative, but anyways might as well use that.

Should be on page 294

All right, I'm up and about now, adding characters :)

I find Benjamin Hudsons genealogy to be very interesting, as most other sources I've come across, lists Sihtric Caech as an actual grandson of Ivar, not just a "descendant".

Found some of the book on google books, so gonna take a look at it :)

EDIT: All right, the picture is no longer up to date, so just gonna remove it :)

	1000.7.1={
		death="1000.7.1"
	}
}

Better put some reasoning behind all of this:
I've made all my additions Norwegian culture & given them Norwegian simply because it's easier for me, and since they aren't landed it dosn't really matter that much IMO (and there's no Norse gaelic culture in the game)
I'm also gonna refer to the original Ivar as Ivar the boneless, as that's easier. I know there's a debate about linking the historical Imair/Ivar with Ivar the Boneless, but it's irrelevant here, as he's just there to avoid floating characters :)

Anyways First and foremost, I've connected the house of Waterford to the Uí Ímairs through Ragnvald, grandson of Ivar the boneless. I've made this Ragnvald son of Sigtrygg who suppousedly founded Waterford & was a son of Ivar the Boneless. I did this previously, after talking to Isaios who pointed to the connection they both had with Waterford, which made it natural in my humble opinion.

Ivar of Waterford being the son of a guy named Ivar as well, is explained in the book i linked previously :)

I gave Ivar the Boneless another son "Olaf" - he's simply a placeholder character, again to avoid floating characters.

I made Sihtric Caech who's already in the game his son, and added "Gudrød/Gofraid" (another grandson of Ivar the boneless), as a younger brother of Sihtric.

I've given Olaf Cuaran an older brother as well (Harald). I did this because Olaf was born so close to his fathers dead, so I could hardly stick another guy in, born later than him, even though he figures further to the right on the above genealogies.

I realise that Benjamin Hudson made the initial Ragnall, Gudrød and Sihtric sons of the same person, but after having read through the first 30 pages of his book where he discusses this, I felt unconvinced.
This is probably just a gut feeling since I know nothing of the irish language, but my limited understanding leads me to believe, that when someone is called "Ua Imair" it denotes them being actual grandsons of said person, as opposed to "Ui Imair" which denotes them as being descendants. The 3 persons in question are usually labelled as "Ua Imair", so according to my reasoning, Benjamin Hudson's genealogy dosn't really fit too well, as they'd instead be great-grandsons.

If someone could enlighten me on that it'd be great.

Oh also, ignore the character ID's, just some I used to check if everything was as it should be in game.

let me know what you guys think :)

@A_Dane. Sigtrygg is absolutely not a son of Ívarr. No reliable source should be saying that, it is definitely not the case (though sons of Ívarr are named, but I didn't post these guys). Sigtryyg is styled 'grandson of Ívarr' (ua Ímair). We know also that Sigtrygg and Ragnall are brothers (with another brother named Olaf). Sigtrygg and his bros were sons of EITHER a daughter of Ívarr OR a son of Ívarr. According to Adam of Bremen, Sigtrygg Ragnall and their brother Olaf were sons of Guthred son of Harthacnut king of Northumbria (i.e. this guy), which is why Benjamin Hudson has the genealogy he does. As Guthred's father was named as Harthacnut in reliable sources, then to make this theory work Sigtrygg et al must be sons of a daughter of Ívarr. Others would just say Adam of Bremen was incorrect, but for our purposes it's a neat fit.

Hmm, I'm not sure if we're following the same line of thought here, probably because I was unclear about that. I apologize for that.

I've highlighted a part of your post, as I'm not sure exactly what you mean there. - As you said yourself, they're mentioned as being styled "Ua Imair", or Grandsons of Imair, which would make Benjamins genealogy incompatiable, with what is generally accepted as "facts", which is why i went ahead and didn't follow it.
to clarify: Am i to intertrept your post as saying, that if I reject Benjamins hypothesis, I shall make Sihtric Caech, Ragnvald and Olaf sons of a daughter instead?

(Also, could you point me to the place where they're connected as brother? I've not seen that anywhere, only that they were grandsons of Ivar, which I found a strange way of putting it if they were brothers)

On the Sigtrygg I'm talking about: he is on Wikipedia listed as Sitric the Dane, founder of Waterford, completely seperate from Sigtrygg Caech who i suspect you're talking about.
http://sitemaker.umich.edu/mladjov/files/viking_britain.pdf this is the only thing I can find right now, and it's possibly unreliable, but here he is listed as being the son of Ivar.
As i said, this line was one I had done previously for something unrelated, but decided to keep it, since It wasn't clear from the genealogies posted (except the one I rejected to use for reasons mentioned above), that Ragnall/Ragnvald and Sitric Caech were brothers.

Yes, my bad.

What I was saying was that if Hudson is correct, the three Uí Ímair can only be grandsons via a woman, because their father is known to be Guthred son of Harthacnut; i.e. their proposed father Guthred is not Ívarr's son. Incidentally, if you are to invent a fictional father, Olaf would not be a good choice because pre-Norman people in the region almost never ever called a son after a living father. :)

Ah all right much clearer, complete brainfart on my side there, but either I missed something in Hudson (If i remember it correctly, his argumentation was that Ua Imair could also mean "descendants" not just "grandsons", didn't even consider the descend through a daughter angle)
But anyways, Could you agree with it if I changed Olaf to something different? I'm no expert on this, merely very interested, and this is all based on my own perception of the evidence laid before me :)

Well the problem is that right now is, that the fictional Olaf I created has 2 sons: Sihtric Caech and Gudrød, so that would be the same problem, no?

EDIT: also, which of them do you prefer anyway, It wouldn't be much of a problem changing it :)

Alright, well Ragnall and Sihtric were definitely brothers, that's probably more important than anything else. Not sure why Hudson has Gudrod as a brother of Ragnall and Sigtrygg (that's vaguely possible, but makes Hudson's position incoherent).

Oh god damnit, I'm too unclear -.-

Hudson didn't list Sihtric and Gudrød as brothers, I just made them so, because Gudrød seemed important, and was listed in the genealogies without any clear connections. To keep the amount of fictional additions down, I decided to make them brothers.

Anyways, I'll make Ragnall and Sihtric brothers and see about adding Olaf and see what to do about Gudrød Ua Imair :)

Oh even missed that :) but then we have the same problem as before :)

EDIT: nevermind, Godfrey is named as the son of a Godfrey in the genealogy you linked, should be fine.

I'll change it in a little, gotta grab something to eat now.
