I'm going to do a LAN HOI2 game and we need some sort of general rules eg. cant attack Germany in 36'. I've seen a link somewhere that had like a huge list but cant seem to find it. Help would be appreiciated

From wikipedia:

* Save/Reload: No matter how badly a battle unfolds, refrain from going back to a saved game.
* Slow Down: Since the AI adjusts slowly to deep penetrations, have a "cooling off" period of a few days for your units.
* No Pause: do not use the pause button during battle, do not slow down time during battle: allow yourself to have a slow response time to changing conditions, to give the AI a chance
* No Spamming: No massive infantry spamming, no massive CAS death-star, no cruizer-zerg spamming, no factory spamming
* Acceptall cheat: Often, the AI won't accept a peace deal that it truly should. Thus, use this cheat to save the AI from its own stupidity, only when not accepting peace mean certain and quick annexation.
* Unit diversity: make an army with a diversity of units, with brigades.
* Military Control: do not take military control of allies.
* Aircraft: do not use ground attack missions
* Historical: stick to historical events at least until 1939, if not until 1941.
* Research: do not research doctrines until units are at war, and no doctrine switching.

No more than one air wing on each mission in each province.
Helps reduce the ridiculous power of the air force.

No silly puppets: Only release parts of conquered nations ("Vichys"), never the whole nation unless it's really tiny. Because that they have no revolt chance (or at least huge internal dissent) seems rather unrealistic.
Keeps your TC in the red.

except for, you know...the germans

Well the Germans got quite a bit of operational experience when moving its army into Austria, the Sudetenland and the rest of Czech. There was also a substantial improvement between the invasion of poland and the low countries several months later.

I'm not sure I'd agree with the idea of no research till war (I assume this is just doctrine research we're discussing) but I think a rule of no starting research till the historical year would be reasonable (except maybe Japan with Naval Doctrines)

Thanks for posts. But lets say we did decide to use no research during peace. The japanese and Italians would have a huge upperhand considering they're at war for so early. And the SU would have even harder times keeping the Germans at bay

Perhaps not "no research", but at least limited research. No advance-researching of Land Doctrines, at least. Yes, it would certainly benefit the Japanese, the Italians less so (the Abyssinian War shouldn't last that long). The question, of course, is whether giving these two lesser Powers a head start would be that much of a problem -and that depends on which nations the players are using. Germany, US and USSR shouldn't mind.

Of course, the others could always find themselves a minor war to field-test their armies. DoW Albania or something.

SU also have the Winter War to get them started on doctrines, before the Germans come knocking on their door, so I dont consider it too big a handicap.

Well we went went ahead with the LAN, but the rules kinda went to shit :D. It was Germany vs SU. I paradropped to create encirclemetns and my mate decided to military control Finland, after he made them a puppet. No ground attack though and i bombed the hell out of his Infrastructure so his men couldn't reorg :p. Anyway, I as Germany won and he did mass redeploy back like 5 provinces and I managed to force the redeploying units back to Moscow. Game ended though after he admitted defeat and it wasn't even prperly winter :(

From wikipedia:

Do NOT use this list by J.T. It is a list of house rules for SP games. Obviously doesn't make any sense for MP games. Most of the other suggestions here are also coming from SP players vs the AI. Do not listen to these. If you want house rules just check out any MP thread because they all link to a set of house rules.

why not using ground attack mission? is something "wrong" with them?

In original game massive ground attack could decimate anything that moved. Being overly effective and i suspect turn into massing ground attack planes. THis would make tactics and land forces less worthwhile and stop the game being as fun :(

One House-Rule that I have adopted recently, is to upgrade the tanks only one time.
From a small , underpowered Pz.I, you simply can't do a nice Pz.V. :)
There were tanks modifications during the war, like additional armor plates, or a bigger gun, sometime even removing the turret and replace with an AA or AT gun, but the main tank body, the chassis , and the engine, suspensions, etc, remain mostly the same.
Improved tanks where usually slower.
Basically they were just expedients.

Still, a good tank crew can be assigned to another tank model, that is why I agree with only one upgrade.

Same reason as limiting the number of wings flying each mission in each region.
Should apply to multiplayer as much as to singleplayer -this game can be won on airpower alone, after all.

so that explaines it. i've been playing mod34, where planes suffer extremly high losses, for so long that i've completely forgot about it :)
