Greetings and salutations people of the Paradox forums. I am Yoshi an amateur writer and AGoT enthusiast. This AAR is the culmination of many weeks of angst, for a while I have enjoyed writing but each previous attempt at an AAR has ended in failure. After much deliberation I have decided to once again try my hand at writing an AAR. This AAR will take place in the Vale, a region filled with mountains, wild hill clansmen and honorable knights. I will be playing as an already established house that of Grafton. My goals will be lofty and ever evolving but you can be sure whenever one hurdle is passed another will take its place. My character will be custom made but I have used the a trait that allows me to insert myself into the family. Aside from this one change from canon the rest of this AAR will try to stay as close to the canon laws beautifully crafted in the World of Ice and Fire that George R.R. Martin has so expertly created. Therefore I will be using cheats however this will only be used as a means to rationalize events in Westeros after all we don't want the vale to suddenly inherit some random Lordship on the Skagosi isles do we? That said I will try to limit my use of cheats as much as is possible for a lover of the AGoT world. Beneath is a snippet of what is to come in my AAR. At the bottom of this post will be the current rules and table of contents as and when they are required. Thank you for taking the time to read this intro and I hope you enjoy.

My name is Osney Grafton. From a young age I knew that my family was the scorn of the vale, yes the Grafton’s of Gulltown the laughingstock of the noble Vale. Our lands are small but those pompous fools forget we were once Kings. Yes even then our lands paled in comparison to the ever prideful Royces, who still revel in their ancient history of Kingship. Once they were the Kings of Mountains but now they feed on the bottom with us yet they fail to embrace this role as we have. Their pride as all knights is boundless, they refuse what is left to us lords who are now made to bend so low. Gold is the only way men of our station will ever climb to the highest rungs of power .This bitter truth is not accepted by the chivalrous knights of the vale who cling to custom as a fly clings to shit. So when people ask me why do you bow so low?, how can you lose face while the other lords laugh in contempt at you? My answer is simple, one day maybe not in my lifetime or even my sons this family of mine will rule the vale then who knows maybe we shall attempt to survive the game of thrones and achieve total dominance. Who knows what the future will hold, other than that this game I play will either end in total victory or crushing defeat. The rest is and will be down to my hands, I shall craft my future for the gods shine not upon the Grafton’s of Gulltown.

An extract from the biography of Lord Osney Grafton compiled by Grand Maester Arstan.

Current Rules in Effect -

  • No use of reloads unless the family line will be immediately extinct .
  • No use of save scamming to get the best event outcomes, things will progress as they will.
  • No use of cheats for the benefit of my family other than to keep the world feeling canon.

The Grafton's of Gulltown
Prologue - Osney Grafton

pWjqLlX.png

A Braavosi coin.

21 May, 8284

Off the coast of Lys on the Braavosi trading galleon the Titan’s Daughter.

Osney Grafton

Waves rocked the small merchant vessel back and forth in the midday sun . The ship had been at sea for a month and the island of Lys was close. Osney lay reclining on his bunk, sweat dripped from every pore like a leaking cistern, the air was humid to the touch and had created dark damp patches on his tunic. The only respite from the sharp midday heat was the occasional gust of wind from the North. At times like this it was hard to imagine his home the Vale . Leaning forwards took effort the heat seemed to suck all the energy out of him. In front of Osney lay a small breakfast plate of sardines fried in rich Braavosi spices with a side of olives and Tyroshi olive bread. The food smelt wonderful but the heat made even a small meal unbearably uncomfortable. Rather than sit sulking in his cabin Osney gathered up his meager selection of possessions attaching his coin purse and his sword sheath to his belt. The deck was much cooler than it was in the depths of the ship's hull but it also left Osney with an uneasy feeling. The crew stopped instinctively staring at Osney the mysterious foreigner, had it not been for the ship's captain Osney was sure the crew would have tried their hands at jumping him. The feeling of vulnerability was easily ignored, these Braavosi wanted their pay and for that they needed him. The port of Lys was in view its walls and buildings shining like a welcome star to guide unfortunate souls through the darkness. Osney pushed his way through a group of rowdy crewmen and ascended the steps to the stern of the ship where the captain would undoubtedly be. Captain Ternesio Terys was a robust middle aged man the first whiskers of grey hair erupting from his grandiloquent beard. The captain was a simple merchant, he seemed to be content with his lot and at first had been reluctant to act as Osney’s transport but as any man who has ever been to the free cities knows coin can soothe anything granted it was a plentiful sum. Since their first encounter Osney had come to like the soft captain who through his simple and hard exterior was an very interesting character. The captain had a quizzical look on his face quite far from his usual stern demeanor, on eying his patron a sad look began to form on the old sea dogs face. Bad news was on the horizon Osney had seen that look before. Captain Ternesio approached Osney slowly, he avoided eye contact and drooped his head low.

Osney broke the silence “Captain is there news I do not know of?”

“My Lord a man has grievous news.”

A knot formed in Osney’s stomach “News of home?”

“My Lord this man has news better heard from a friendly mouth.”

“Captain your mouth is as friendly as any.”

“As you wish my Lord a man has news from Gulltown, your liege Lord Marq has been killed in battle outside of Gulltown.”

Osney had known his grandfather well, the man was a decent commander and honorable knight. But as Osney knew honour was a fickle beast that leads all that follow to death.

“My grandfather….he was always an honourable man and he has been repaid by the gods with death! what of my father and brother?”

Captain Ternesio gave a shrug “A man does not know but the ship out of Gulltown claims that a Lord Gerold now captains Gulltown.”

Osney had hoped his father was alive but he knew the Gerold Ternesio spoke of. Gerold Grafton was Osney’s younger brother and in all respects a good man but the claim was his after all he was the eldest.

“Captain change course we head for Gulltown.”

Ternesio gave a worried look but Osney soothed it with the never failing line “Dont worry good Captain I shall pay you.”

The captain gave a smile and bowed “A man will see it done.”

(As a side note the captain Ternesio is actually the Captain who takes Arya Stark to Braavos.)

The Grafton's of Gulltown
Prologue Part II - Osney Grafton

latest

Braavosi galleon The Titans Daughter.

2 June, 8284

Docking at the port of Gulltown on the Braavosi trading galleon the Titan’s Daughter.

Osney Grafton

The Titans Daughter glided seamlessly through the rough waters of the bay of crabs. Osney stood at the bow of the ship the high winds of the vale ruffling his hair, Gulltown was in sight it’s white walls and bustling harbor just beyond his reach. The air had the familiar smell of fresh caught fish, nothing in the world could compare to the feeling of being home and Osney felt alive. Captain Ternesio had done well to travel such a distance so quickly however it had left its marks, while passing the stepstone isles the Titans Daughter had been set upon by pirates under the flag of Salladhor Saan. The crew were quick to react firing their crossbows at the approaching pirate vessel. After a tense stalemate where both ships engaged in long range combat firing a host of missiles at each other the Titans Daughter was able to slip away. Two Braavosi crewmen had been killed and the hull slightly damaged by fire from a well aimed fire arrow but they had luckily stayed afloat. After their brief encounter with the notorious Salladhor Saan the brave crew of the Titans Daughter had to run the straits of Tarth and Shipbreaker bay during the greatest storm ever recorded in the Stormlands history a feat not many would scoff at. From that point onwards the journey went off without a hitch.

“Ahoy ship ahead Ahoy”

Ahead of the Titans Daughter sat a large war galley, the masts flew the banner of house Arryn however Osney recognised the ship as one of his grandfather's the Noble Hawk. The ship had pulled up in front of the entrance to Gulltown using its own hull as a barrier. In the distance Osney could hear the great bells of Gulltown ringing alerting the populace that an enemy was on the horizon. Captain Ternesio and the crew of the Titans Daughter looked on in fear as crossbowmen appeared on the starboard side of the ship. The captain wasted no time in calling the crew to halt the galleon. Osney ran up to Ternesio’s side.

“Captain what is going on?”

The Captain had a look of terror on his face “ A man does not know Lord Grafton.”

The bells in Gulltown ceased to ring and left a tense silence in their wake “ What are we to do captain?....fuck”

The old seadog just looked forwards in disbelief “ That ship will eat us for dinner if it wants to, there is nothing this man can do.”

“Nothing…..fuck…..you mean to say we are dead?”

“Lord Grafton a man does not know but a man fears it is so.”

“Shit….fuck….shit”

The Titans daughter closed in on the Noble Hawk both crews sat paralyzed as the gap became near metres. There was a loud thud as the Titans Daughter smashed head first into the Noble Hawk, at first there was panic as both ships crews scrambled to jump overboard but before they could the two ships disengaged the Titans daughter bouncing of the Noble Hawk’s hull. Osney looked to the Ternesio for a clue as to what happned but the old Captain looked as clueless as Osney. The Noble Hawks crew were already preparing to board by the time some semblance of order had returned to Ternesio’s battered crew. The Braavosi prepared their knives and crossbows for battle but it did not come. At the head of the boarding party was a tall armor clad knight strangely bearing the sigil of Grafton. Osney scrambled in front of the Braavosi sailors holding up his arms.

“Stop….fucking stop…wait!”

Both crews stood still for a second time seeming to stand frozen. The knight called out to Osney “Brother is that you?”

The voice was unmistakable it was that of Gerold Grafton “Brother!...yes its me...its fucking me!”

(I know, I know you want the story to begin but give it time :) )

The Grafton's of Gulltown
Prologue Part III - Osney Grafton

KNEELKN2.gif

Ser Gerold Grafton Kneeling.

2 June, 8284

Docking at the port of Gulltown on the Braavosi trading galleon the Titans Daughter

Osney Grafton

On Osney’s sixteenth nameday his grandfather Lord Marq handed him his own sword and a purse full to the brim with gold, that day Osney left Gulltown on the ship the Titan’s Daughter to the city of Braavos. Seven years, it had been seven years since he had seen his brother. How the boy had turned into a man he was tall, muscular and had a sense of new found confidence. Gerold stood frozen in front of him at first both the two opposing sides looked on in worry after all it would not have been the first time brother had fought brother. The silence lasted only seconds but it felt as if the whole world stood completely still. It was Gerold who moved first, dropping to his knee with his sword balanced in front of him.

“Gerold dear brother what are you doing?”

“Lord Grafton…… you have returned.”

Osney was taken aback he had not expected his brother would take news of his return well “Brother….fuck….its been years stand up you fool!”

Gerold did not move “My Lord take me into your service.”

“Brother if I take you into my service will you please fucking stand up?”

Gerold gave a decisive nod “I will my Lord.”

Drawing his sword Osney placed the flat side of the blade on his brothers left shoulder then onto his right whilst uttering the words “Dear brother do you solemnly swear to serve as an honorable Knight in my household?”

Gerold looked up his face revealing a large smile “I do brother…. you don't know how much I mean that.”

Placing the sword back into its sheath Osney held his hand out to help his brother up. Both the assaulting Valeman party and the Titan’s crew stood awkwardly watching the two brothers reunite.

Gulltown in the year 8284

The Noble Hawk entered the harbor calmly with the Titan’s Daughter close behind. Osney had joined his brother on the bow of the Noble Hawk, Gerold stood staring at Gulltown the wind ruffling his long hair and a beaming smile on his face. Gulltown looked the same as it had done seven years ago. There was the usual aroma of shit, sex and mead, the harbor side bustled with whores, rowdy sailors and drunk city watchmen and Osney could hear the bustle of the marketplace. The strange cacophony brought memories of Gulltown flooding back to Osney. The first time his father took him to the Gulltown market, the strange faces and accents, merchants sold bizarre spices and elixirs. It was at that moment Osney had realized gold was more important than honor or knighthood, from that day onwards he had always taken up the offer of a trip to the marketplace. Ahead stood a small selection of Nobles waiting on the jetty for the ship to dock. Osney recognized the old knight Ser Aynald Shett and his son Ser Damon, there was also a man bearing the colors of house Arryn of Gulltown but Osney did not recognize the face. The noble hawk slid alongside the jetty stopping to a standstill the anchor being lowered.

Gerold slid alongside Osney and whispered in his ear “The Arryn’s name is Ser Creighton, don't forget that he is a prickly man.”

The brothers walked the remainder of the way to the greeting party in silence both apprehensive about how Osney would be received, Ser Aynald Shett was the first to speak “Lord Grafton you have returned…. how fortunate.”

There was something in Ser Aynalds words that took Osney aback but he rallied under a joke “Well Ser Aynald at least I am not a pirate as you had feared.”

The joke was met with a mild reception, Ser Damon gave a chuckle but both his father and Ser Creighton kept their straight and cold faces. Ser Creighton was next to speak “Lord Grafton the city garrison has been put on alert I would take leave to stand them down.”

“You may have leave Ser Creighton.”

The distant Arryn relative walked off his small bodyguard in tow. Osney noticed a growing crowd at the end of the jetty. The smallfolk were being held back by a few town watchmen but not because they were a threat but because they all wanted to see their returning Lord.

The Crowd shouted “Ser Osney” “M’Lord” and “Hurrah our Lord is here.”

Osney glanced over to his brother “Brother I think I am going to like being Lord.”

(The first part will be up sometime this week stay tuned!)

Nice prologue. Plus, the narrative-esque style always holds a soft spot for me, since all the great "ancient" AARs were mostly narratives, and so was the first AAR I undertook!

Keep up the great work so far!

The Grafton's of Gulltown
Chapter I - Rolley Stone

j5AlGp0.jpg

Rolley Stone on entering Gulltown.

7 June, 8284

Rolley Stone entering Gulltown

Merchant's son Rolley Stone

Rolley strode into Gulltown his father's ox drawn cart following close behind him. Ever since Rolley had been but a boy his father had taken him on all his trips across the Vale and along the way told him stories of his past. His father had been a fourth son of a small noble family from Strongsong, as such when Rolley’s father came of age he was sent off by his brother with a minor amount of coin. What had happened next Rolley knew well after all the story had been told to him many times before. The now destitute noble managed to find himself passage to Gulltown, from there he scrounged money working as a small time merchant selling his wares in the old town market. The next account of his father's journey seemed rather embellished but the story was better that way, his father had come across a Lyseni ship run aground just outside of Gulltown whilst taking his regular journey to Runestone. As the story goes the ship has a cargo full of exquisite bolts of Lyseni silk. His father being the opportunistic sort elected to alleviate the dead crew of some of their wares. This was the turning point in his father's fortunes, soon he had a large townhouse in Gulltown and four carts travelling around the vale selling his wares. Around this time Rolley was born to a prostitute his father frequently visited, his mother was said to have died in childbirth but Rolley suspected she had abandoned him with his father. It was four years ago that his father had died of pneumonia at the young age of forty-three. Since his father's death the fortunes of Rolley had fallen, now only one cart remained in his service and the townhouse was falling apart brick by brick. Up ahead Rolley could see Gulltower the small keep of house Shett. It was also coincidentally where Rolley was headed to meet with Ser Damon Shett the current commander of the city watch. The streets seemed unusually quiet for a market day the only other visible person being a thief hanging from a beam above the city watch barracks. Rolley raised his hand up getting the driver of his oxen cart to halt. The driver was a dour old man by the name of Pate who had been hired by his father years ago.

“Pate take the cart into the market and then find out what is happening.”

The sour cart driver gave a grunt and nod as acknowledgment then whipped the reins back setting the ox into motion. The cart went down a side road leaving Rolley alone on the deserted street. Reaching the gateway to Gulltower Rolley notices it's usually well guarded gates were locked and bolted shut its usual sentries nowhere to be found. Just as Rolley was about to leave a clocked man approached him from an alley way. Rolley drew his dagger readying it against the mysterious figure.

The man raised his hands and spoke in a soft hypnotic voice “I wouldn't do that if I were you”

Rolley raised the dagger to the man's throat “Be gone thief.”

The hooded man just gave a laugh at this wimpy threat “I am no thief.”

Dropping his hood the man revealed the face of Gerold Grafton a man Rolley had only seen from a distance before. “Ser Gerold….my apologies.”

Gerold smiled “None are necessary in fact it is I who owes you an apology.”

“An apology?”

“For cancelling your meeting with Ser Damon”

Rolley was lost, what did the Grafton want “My meeting…..It was cancelled by you?”

Gerold gave another chuckle “Oh me no, it was my brother Lord Grafton that asked me to cancel your meeting and then contact you.”

“Lord Grafton?”

“Yes he wishes to notify you about your new promotion to chief customs officer.”

Rolley was now completely lost “Me chief customs officer…..you must be having a joke Harrold Vaye already holds that position.”

Gerold gave a smug grin “Not for much longer, he will be arrested shortly for embezzlement and corruption.”

Rolley was shocked Harrold Vaye had held the position for over twenty years “Vaye has always seemed the solid sort type of guy, the few times we have met that is.”

“He is an honest fellow but he is also stubborn and difficult.”

Rolley was shocked “You mean to say you are framing him?”

Gerold put a finger over his lips “Quiet you fool the streets have been emptied as much as possible for my brothers tourney but some still remain here.”

Rolley moved past the subject of Vaye’s guilt “So why are you replacing him with me?”

“Ah my dear fellow that is quite simple, you are a man of little wealth and note someone we believe will do anything we need him to.”

“And what am I needed for?”

Gerold gave a smile “You are an inquisitive fellow aren't you, well Lord Grafton wishes to see the tariffs on goods in Gulltown raised.”

“To what end if I may ask?”

Gerold smiled “That is not of importance, now tell me will you take the position?”

“It seems like a dangerous game to play especially with Vaye’s imminent demise.”

“You will be allowed to keep some of the extra profit shall we say 5%?”

Rolley mulled the idea over in his head, on the one hand if he accepted he would be a puppet for the Grafton’s machinations and if he refused such plans he was certain he would meet the same end as Vaye. On the other hand however if he refused the job title Ser Gerold would just find another man to take his place most likely killing Rolley to keep the plot a secret. It seemed to Rolley that either way he was going to lose but the latter would be quicker and so he replied “That should be fine, when am I expected to take position?”

In the distance Rolley head the smashing of wood and screaming of men, Gerold turned to Rolley “Oh right away, I believe Vaye has been detained.”

The Grafton's of Gulltown
Chapter II - Ser Gerold Grafton

Rsewjqq.jpg

Messenger Raven.

21 June, 8284

Ser Gerold Grafton

Gulltown council Chambers
Gerold strode confidently through the corridors of Grafton keep. Since his brother's recent return the fortunes of House Grafton had taken a massive rise. His brother through the use of foresight and intrigue had almost doubled their income. They had but a week ago received news that the first large merchant convoy was about to arrive in Gulltown and that the coffers were once again filling up. Rounding the corner Gerold bumped into the master of Gulltown Damon Vaye. The man was middle aged his hair in the process of graying and his skin showing the first signs of wrinkling. Unlike his cousin Harrold he was an honorable and steadfast man who had not only served as Master for twelve years but also held the position of Justiciar.

Damon greeted him stiffly “Ser Gerold.”

Gerold gave a smile “Master Damon how good to see you, would you walk to council with me?”

Damon gave a half hearted bow then offered the customary words presumably so as not to offend “It would be an honor Ser after you.”

“So Master I hear your cousin has been arrested, is what the watch say of him true?”

Damon’s face became strained “My elderly uncle is distraught….Harrold just disappeared without a trace, I mean he must be guilty or else why would he run?”

Gerold could barely contain a smile, for as he already knew Harrold was dead killed by a watchman during his arrest. Rather than cause uproar both the guards in question and Harrold were disappeared leaving no trace. A day later they pushed the arrest pretending to miss Harrold who had somehow escaped on a ship to Essos. “It would appear so Master, it is such a shame he was a good man and an even better Chief customs officer.”

“He was a good man I just hope he comes back and it has all been some kind of mistake.”

Gerold gave a sympathetic look “I am afraid our steward is quite sure, the ledgers contained large amounts of money that are as of yet unaccounted for.”

A sad look washed across Damon’s face “Then he has brought dishonor to me and my house…..this is something I am truly sorry for Ser.”

“A man can but love his family Master hold no guilt.”

Whilst chatting the pair had walked the remainder of the distance to the council chambers. His brother Lord Grafton had called and impromptu meeting after receiving a mysterious letter from the Eyrie. The rest of the council had already assembled, they sat waiting impatiently for Master Damon the Justiciar and Gerold himself who had been named General of the army of Grafton. Both men took their places at the thick red oak table that had served the Grafton council for over 300 years. Each chair was hand carved Oak with the insignia of the council position carved into the back. Since the days of old the council had grown and so too had the amount of people in the room but on this occasion only the inner circle of the council were present. Sitting at the head of the table was the new Lord Grafton who wore a red wool tunic with the sigil of Grafton emblazoned on the left breast.

His brother stood up motioning for quiet “Loyal council members today I have fortuitous news from the Eyrie!” With a flourish of the hands Osney pulled the letter in question and began reading from it “Illustrious Lord Grafton I hereby invite you to feast with your fellow Lords as we celebrate your families reintegration into the Vale. We have fought as enemies on the battlefield both for noble causes and I wish for no grudge to be harbored especially for the death of my once honorable bannerman Lord Marq Grafton.”

The room sat in silence each face gave a different emotion, some like the Justiciar were thrilled at this letter promising peace with no real reparations but others like Ser Creighton argued against the invitation into the vale. The room turned from a meeting into an all out argument. The only quiet parties were that of Osney and Gerold himself, both sat as one comment turned into another and the room descended into an argument. “Bastard” shouted Ser creighton followed by a punch. Osney stood his face visibly red “Silence…...I command you silence…..this is an outrage.”

The council members sat sheepishly their heads bowed and tails between their legs as Osney continued “ I have already made my decision and it is final so if you have quite finished.”

Silence took hold of the room the council members waiting for Lord Grafton’s final answer. Gerold looked to his brother who appeared to have only just come out of his rage “I will attend Lord Arryn’s feast, there I will push for a marriage to help further my push back into the fold.”

Gerold stood up “You intend to marry someone so soon, who?”

Osney calmly said “Ysilla Royce.”

Gerold was seething Lord Royce fought beside Robert in the battle of Gulltown and was even said to have lead the charge that killed his father “You are not serious brother, they are our mortal enemies and have been since they met us on the field fighting for that drunkard the usurper!”

The outburst shocked the room all the council members sat silent, Osney calmly sat down and then replied “Brother we have no choice, the usurper won, grandfather is dead and if we refuse there is a risk we will be ostracized from the politics of the Vale for generations.”

Gerold could see Master Damon smugly nodding to his side it made him seethe with rage, in a moment of pure madness he slammed his fist onto the table “You would bow meekly to these degenerates!....he would be named your father in law….I would not allow our family to take such insult.”

Osney jumped up his previous rage returning “We have been insulted for generations, we hold no large armies or noble lineages. Our allies are few and far and whatsmore the Vale looks to us only for food in the harsh winters…. this insult would help us break free of this title and let us stand titans among others noble houses of the Vale.”

Gerold could see Osney’s point but the idea of a Royce living in Grafton keep filled him with disgust. “So we would accept Royce’s patronage and become his vassal?”

Chuckling Gerold’s brother collapsed back into his chair “ No brother you misunderstand my plan, I wish to break into the higher ranks of the nobility so I am able to find other allies then we can climb higher in the knowledge half the arms of the Vale back us.”

“Why a Royce brother?”

“Because she holds the key to my machinations, now prepare for a journey to the Eyrie we must be ready three days hence or we will never make it in time.”

The rooms eyes fell upon Gerold, he could feel their eyes boring into his skin awaiting a response. Meekly he replied “My Lord I will trust your judgment but promise me that your machinations include that houses demise.”

This is only half the chapter I did not want it to be too long, the next half will be up on sunday :) .

Thanks for the kind words, I do love the more narrative writing style it just immerses me even more :).

That much is evident in your latest two posts! And, although I'm sure one should always hope that the AAR is well-received, I do like the aesthetics of your text and font--always big premiums in my book.

And ending on the note of potential familial rivalry indicates you're already used to the only way narratives work (or used to) on these forums...cliff hanger! :p
