Horrible stuttering

So i started playing and noticed some stuttering now and then whenever the game is unpaused. being in late-game now the stuttering makes it unbearable to play. its almost every second whenever i move the camera when the games unpaused

YES ive tried the suggestions mentioned in the "Master fix for stellaris" thread on Steam

My Specs

CPU: Ryzen 7 3700x
GPU: Nvidea GTX 970 (4gb)
RAM: 16GB DDR4

Installed on an SSD
Running Windows 10

Id be very glad to anyone who could solve this issue since its so annoying that i cant enjoy the game at all..

EDIT; I just found out that you can pan around while holding the middle mouse button. doing so causes almost no stutter. Using WASD or the directional keys made the stuttering appear again

This is mostly in late game play, is that right? Does the size of the galaxy matter?

DXDIAG is a program you run from the Windows search box on the task bar. After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Please attach here your Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/settings.txt and pdx_settings.txt .
From your Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/logs/ folder, attach here system.log , error.log .

Yes, i do have mods activated. Ill list them below. Also i can figure that youll ask me to unsubscribe/uninstall them but wouldnt that crash my save file whenever i try to load them without the mods? And yes im in Late game right now..

Yes, most likely a modded game cannot be played without them - one of the risks of using them!

As you can see there are a LOT of errors in that log, presumably mostly from those mods. Whether they relate to the performance issue I cannot say.

Does this happen in a galaxy that's never had any mods used in it?

In that dxdiag i see Stellaris crashing in CELib_x64.dll . Am I right in thinking that is part of a 'training' (cheat) utility? If so we need to remove that from this machine while we work on this.

Yes, at one point my game stuttered that much that i was desperately searching for any kind of solution. I think Gigastructural Engineering adds some cheaty features like building multiple gigastructures at once..

i unsubbed all the mods. should i try starting a new game?

So i started a new game and jump-started by unlocking all research projects that are non-crisis ones and about 3 hours into it its stuttering again, but you almost dont see it at all. but if im panning over the map you can clearly see it happen even if its just for a split second..

Oh, so this is a subtle effect that is worrying you! I took it from your thread title that this must have been a very intrusive problem.

I'm not sure how much we're going to be able to alleviate that, but let's give it a try.

Right click on stellaris.exe , properties, compatibility. Tick "disable fullScreen optimisations", untick anything else in there that is ticked, then apply and exit.

Then in the launcher set Display mode to fullScreen and try the game again (same save as above) - any better?


If it still happens, what CPU and GPU temperatures do you get while the problem is happening?

its subtle for now! i only have 3 colonies and only revealed about 1/4 of the map. The modded savegame is stuttering every 0.5 seconds. like completely freezing up for a second.

I tried what you suggested but that didnt help at all.. both gpu and cpu are well below 60°C when this is happening

UPDATE: After roughly 6 hours in the stuttering is getting worse and worse. even restarting the game only reduces the stuttering, until it gets really annoying..

Are the temps still below 60c then?

Yes. CPU is at about 55°C and GPU 42°C.. im not at a point where this is constantly happening but when panning over the galaxy map with WASD-keys its most noticable. I used the console to enable 3dstats and it seems there is a big spike with each and every day passing ingame. Does this might be caused by my weak CPU?

That's a fair point, your CPU is only modestly better than the minimum requirement:

If you run Task manager in Windows, Performance, and run the game in windowed mode, can you see the GPU, CPU or anything else spiking in time with th eproblem?

Then that might just be the case. I tried playing in a tiny galaxy with 200 Stars. Jump-Started with some console commands to get things running and even after exploring the whole galaxy and being close to midgame (2340) there is just a very subtle stuttering. ive been playing on big galaxies (1000 stars) and the stuttering was just unbearable.

No, thats what makes this issue so weird. neither my GPU or CPU are spiking up. Although my CPU is running at about 4ghz. I think my CPU and my old GPU might be the culprit here. Its like my CPU isnt able to process all the things that are going on at one day, especially when there are more than 3 AI´s.

But ive run into another problem. Sometimes the game stutters pretty hefty when im viewing a red star galaxy. Tabbing out and back in resolves this some times.

Update; i turned 3dstats back on to monitor how its running some more and you could cleary see little spikes with each day passing ingame, almost looking like a heartbeat. my CPU is currently at 5% Workload, running with 4,2 ghz

Your CPU would normally be 3.6ghz according to dxdiag so I assume you have OCing on the CPU at least - possibly other hardware too? What happens if you disable that, as a test?

Im sorry but an absolute idiot when it comes to overclocking so going higher than 3,6ghz when it needs to is the systems default setting i think. i dont know how to disable that.

Sorry but what good comes out of restricting my CPU-Speed? As i stated before this is the default configuration for my CPU.. It seems to be struggling already so why deactivate the build-in cpu-boost?

I have seen cases where OCing actually worsens performance, due to timing mismatches in various hardware components. This is definitely a long shot!

But I don't have anything else to suggest, I am sorry.

Disable all CPU power saving features in windows and bios as well. Core parking can be very detrimental in multithreaded apps, Stellaris being one
