anyhow, I see too many assumptions here about France overrunning Italy once and again when we just have no idea.
True. Also, if France wants overrun Italy, mountains aren't going to be that much of help for Italians, game mechanics considering.

Industry/Railroads are overrated!note in V1, mountains could be avoided by landing behind in the lines, no matter how many mountains you have on your border it is irrelevant.

I doff my hat to thee! I tried a few games of 1.0 and didn't touch the game again for about 2 or 3 years till VIPR.

Separate issue. Obviously if I have command of the sea I won't be attacking across a mountain chain.
And in the end how relevant are the mountains along the border between Provence and Piedmont to the military defense of northern Italy....how many times between say 1480 and 1820 did the French pour across those exact same mountains and run riot down the Italian peninsula? Around half a dozen or so I'd estimate, including Napoleon whose rampage would have been within living memory of many adults alive in 1836.
The Alps might indeed have been a barrier by the time WWI came along, thanks to the development of military technology that favored defense over offense, but they certainly were not some impassible barrier, either.
In the end Paradox have made their design decision and from the statements made here do not intend at this time to change it. Perhaps post-releae they may decide to revisit the issue if it is felt to be needed. Modders, of course, will be more than free to tweak this or any section of the map if they so choose after commercial release.
But at this point any further discussion about this point of geography and its role on gameplay is nothing more than an exercise in running around in circles, as neither side is likely to be all that convinced by the other, and the same arguments in favor or against are only going to be repeated ad infinitum.
