So, lately everyone has forgotten about this AI personality under the Fanatical Purifier hype... But what if it had it's unique gameplay, too? After all, interesting AI personalities do seem to slowly become "their own thing" and not just an odd ethos combo. So, the question is... How would Honorbound Warriors work as a civic? Would they have some kind of odd honor-limitations, such as only declaring wars on your rivals, inability to attack civilian targets or something entirely different? What would the bonuses be like? Extra happiness from war, unity per won war or plain 33% fire rate? Or something else? What do you think?

Also maybe a weaker version of the 'defender of the galaxy perk'?
That, or maybe always join wars to help people defending against crises and AE's?

Y'know, if they were anything like the Klingons we know and love, they would probably go questing for Leviathans, so maybe you could offer them gold and/or glory to help against stuff like the Space Dragon.
And they definitely wouldn't debase themselves by attacking weaker empires (well, shouldn't, but who wants to tell a Klingon they're wrong?).

Isn't Honorbound Warrior the personality they give to anyone they can't think of a personality for?

Still, I can understand why the idea is attractive, Honorbound Warrior does sound inspiring, virtuous and refreshingly righteous in a setting where sentients are getting devoured for the lulz.

To make one in the vein of Fanatical Purifiers, we'd have to give them significant military boosts to use in their righteous duty, but also significant diplomatic drawbacks. Fanatic Purifiers straight up can not be diplomatic, they fight on their own.

With Honorbound Warriors I'd think more along the lines of limiting their ability to form defensive pacts, alliances or even taking vassals to nations that are either xenophillic or pacifistic. Also prevent them from ever declaring an offensive war against those nations. Allow them to engage in hostile wars against empires that don't meet their moral standards, but limit them to wars of liberation. Any conquest would need to be done via the three stage process of liberating a friendly government, vassalizing them, incorporating them.

For these restrictions give them a fleet capacity and maintenance bonus similar to the fanatic purifiers.

Note2: In the very rare case when an empire has only one non-fanatic etho (only possible for player-submitted empires) the Honorbound Warriors personality will be used.

We're talking about edge cases of factions that spawn without a distinct personality. They used to be called despicable neutrals, but now they're Honorbound Warriors.

Which really is besides the point in terms of what this thread is proposing.

I think that making them unable to declare wars on empires weaker than themselves but also giving them bonuses for winning wars could make for an interesting gameplay challenge - you would try to stay medium the whole game. Grow too large and you will not be able to DOW anyone. Be too small and you will never win any wars and reap the rewards.

you would just have to scrap enough of your ships till you are 'equivalent' then declare war and rebuild. Remember it doesn't base strength on your size but starports, ships and research which are all easy to neglect so you can pick on smaller empires.

Do not limit yorself by current design. What it would use to decide whether or not you are equal could be made more complex than current calculation (which should be changed anyway).
