Emp_Palpatine - Indeed.

lifeless - Maybe...

stnylan, anonymous4401 - Never! Mexico are my friends!

Quirinius308 - No, nothing in Africa, only what they start with

Duke of Wellington - Indeed they do.

Honduras
Free, Soveriegn and Independent

1892 - 1902

In late 1893 Honduras begun building a navy. The ships being built were already obselete among the major world powers, but it was not major world powers that Vasquez was intending to use the ships against. By 1895 the ships were complete, and Honduras now had the second largest navy in the Americas after, of course, the United States.

hon68.jpg

Honduras's new, out of date Navy

Meanwhile, there had been an election, taking place in January 1895. It was, quite predictably, another strong victory by the Partido Conservador and President Vasquez, who after the election made clear his intention to serve as President for the rest of his life assuming that he could win the neccesary elections. The Liberal candidate, Policarpo Bonilla, never had any chance of victory, and the Conservadors and Vasquez won a fifth term.

Dmitri Vasquez (Partido Conservador) - 4,760,237
Policarpo Bonilla (Partido Liberal) - 2,457,964
Marco Aurelio Soto (Liberal de Honduras) - 448,449

Having won the election, Vasquez did something that surprised the whole world: on August 24th 1895 he declared war on Portugal. The Portuguese found themselves under attack on land and at sea, and on November 26th six Honduran divisions landed and took control of Lisboa, the enemy capital.

hon69.jpg

Lisboa occupied

Elsewhere the Azores were occupied and the Portuguese landed a small force on Trinidad. On the Iberian peninsula the Honduran army was only victorious, and soon more than 2/3s of the country was under occupation. The Kap Verde Islands were taken by three Honduran divisions, and the Portuguese in early 1896 offered to surrender. Honduras refused.

hon70.jpg

In March 1896 the Portuguese fleet suffered a humiliating defeat in the Northern Sierra Leone Basin, and Honduras seemed invincible both on land and sea. However, the war on land soon began to turn sour. Portugal counter attacked with a large mobilised force, and won a hard fought victory at Abrantes. Thankfully for Honduras, Portugal accepted to cede the Kap Verdes and the Azores, and Honduras was victorious. But many had died in Iberia, and at least five divisions had been utterly obliterated. The gains were less than were hoped for, but it was better than nothing.

hon71.jpg

Honduras spent the next few years rebuilding the army and navy, and investing more in industry, with the opening of a machine parts factory in Guatemala. However, ever on the look out for opportunities for expansion, Honduras looked on with keen interest as the USA and Spain went to war in February 1898. Vasquez was always a man to take chances, and when Honduras declared colonial war on Spain a big chance was taken indeed. But Spain were losing to the US, and this was an unmissable chance for the former Spanish empire to strike back at the motherland.

Honduras sent three divisions to Cuba and two to Puerto Rico, both of which were undefended. Puerto Rico fell on February 4th 1899 and Cuba was fully occupied a few days later, and in the seas to the north Honduras was given a boost as in a crucial naval battle the USA did them a favour by obiliterating the entire Spanish fleet. God bless America!

With the Spanish Caribbean fully under control, it was time to send the Navy halfway across the world to the Philippines, the only other colony owned by Spain. As the new century dawned the Philippines were gradually occupied. The only trouble was the island of Palawan, where 10,000 Spanish troops were deeply entrenched.

hon72.jpg

Seven divisions were sent in to that hell, and for several months the Spanish held firm. Many Hondurans died, but the Spanish were eventually becoming worn down. In April 1900 Spain offered to surrender, which was promptly accepted by Honduras.

hon75.jpg

The entire Spanish colonial empire is gained.

This was a huge gain for the Hondurans, a great victory against their former colonial masters. The Caribbean was now dominated by Honduras, and had won victories against two European powers.

Worried about an attack from the Dutch, Brunei was granted limited independence as a dominion, and it should be noted that during the war Vasquez was of course swept to a sixth term, once again gaining a solid 60% of the vote against Policarpo Bonilla.

Dmitri Vasquez (Partido Conservador) - 5,000,637

Elsewhere, the British are finding South Africa a little bit Boering...

I find it interesting that Soto has in these last elections just about quadrupled his votes. A fair proportion of that increase must be 'real' as the electorate has only increased comparatively little. Which POPs has he converted to his cause? Might there yet be a winning third party?

stnylan: You know, I really wish that there was some way of telling which party a POP votes for during an election. I don't think any party other than the Conservadors will get in power for the rest of the game, but Soto's party could very well become the opposition.

lifeless: Uh, actually I'd already had that idea before I read your comment, but I guess great minds think alike. ;)

Duke of Wellington: I was hoping to take a European province from Portugal, but failed mainly due to bad planning on my part. :(

rule_brittania: Thanks for reading. :)

Honduras
Free, Soveriegn and Independent

1902 - 1912

On July 7th 1903, at the age of seventy two, President Dmitri Vasquez died of natural causes at the Presidential Palace at Tegusigalpa during his sixth consecutive term in office. His death was widely mourned within all of Central America and the Caribbean, and his funeral was attended by over five thousand mourners. As stated in the constitution, Vice President Terencio Sierra took over the duties of President, and suddenly the Partido Conservador seemed to lose direction. Sierra was a competent but dull man, not a patch on old Vasquez, and there was a certain group of more nationalistic Conservadors who disliked his stance on various issues, and decided to form a new party, the Partido Nacional. They were not viewed as a threat, but the test would come in 1904, when Honduras would once again be gripped by election fever.

Terencio Sierra was to be the Partido Conservador candidate, vowing to continue the legacy of internal and external expansion left by the six terms of Vasquez. Oppsing him was the Liberal Miguel Dávila, who hoped to bring the Liberals back to power after nearly thirty years of opposition. Soto, now 58 years old, continued to lead his Liberal de Honduras, and the Partido Nacional was led by Manuel Bonilla. Bonilla was the founder and leader of the Nacionals, and had in his younger days been involved in many of Honduras's wars as a soldier and an officer.

With Vasquez gone the candidates genuinely had little clue as to how the electorate would respond, but it seemed they stuck by the Conservadors even without the leadership of Vasquez. The results were:

Terencio Sierra - (Partido Conservador) - 5,920,906
Miguel Dávila - (Partido Liberal) - 3,453,447
Marco Soto - (Liberal de Honduras) - 683,938
Manuel Bonilla - (Partido Nacional) - 76,005

Sierra was able to maintain the level of support enjoyed by Vasquez, mostly by riding off that great man's support, and it was another terrible day for the Partido Liberal, who seemed doomed to eternal opposition in what had become a democratic one party state. The share of the vote gained by the nacionals was negligible, under 1%, but Soto's party was ever increasing in popularity, up to nearly 7% from the 2% share recieved in the early days of the party. The Liberal de Honduras also made gains in the Congressional elections, holding 41 seats in the 477 seat parliament.

Having recieved a very definite thumbs up from the electorate, Sierra set about modernising the railways, always a continuous source of government expenditure but massively increased during Sierra's presidency.

hon78.jpg

During his first term there were no wars and no conflict, and so not very much to acutally tell you about, apart from thousands upon thousands of pesos being spent on railways. The activity of trainspotting became popular under Sierra's leadership, which possibly tells you what kind of man he was. He loved his trains and his railways.

And before he knew it, it was election time. Already an old man Sierra opted not to stand again despite the near assurance of victory, instead entrusting the candidature to the younger Dietrich Habsburg, an Austrian immigrant who was indeed very distantly related to the Imperial family of Austria. The Partido Liberal candidate was Juan Ángel Arias, and the Liberal de Honduras candidate was new party leader Rafael López Gutiérrez, Soto having died the previous year of a heart attack. The Partido Nacional did not put up a candidate for President, instead concentrating their efforts on winning seats in Congress. The results of the 1909 election were as follows:

Dietrich Habsburg - (Partido Conservador) - 7,467,045
Juan Ángel Arias - (Partido Liberal) - 2,188,489
Rafael López Gutiérrez - (Liberal de Honduras) - 1,542,482

The Partido Liberal had not thought it possible, but this was the worst result in their history. Under Gutiérrez's leadership the Liberal de Honduras had more than doubled its share of the vote, and many within the Partido Liberal jumped ship and joined with Gutiérrez.

President Habsburg, known affectionately by the press as "Emperor Dietrich", continued with the internal expansion of his predecessor, funding the construction of a steamer shipyard in Guatemala City and the production of luxury clothes on Cuba.

Elsewhere in the world it seemed Russia was having a few problems as Crimea declared independence on October 30th 1911.

Wow, I missed two updates! How did Britain losing all of South Africa happen?

And if Crimea has enough rebels to declare independence, how is the rest of Russia doing?

Honduras
Free, Soveriegn and Independent

1912 - 1920

President Habsburg was an ambitious man, I think that much is obvious. He took to calling himself "Emperor", we thought in jest. But El Presidente had other ideas, ideas that would, within six years, transform Honduras completely.

We first saw this when he ordered that 60 divisions were to be mobilised, and that within a couple of months Honduras would invade her northern neighbour Mexico. On April 21st, with an army outnumbering the enemy 3:1, Honduras declared war on Mexico. The plan was to smash through the defences along the border using artillery, while two armies were landed in Acapulco.

hon80.jpg
The plan is put into action.

On May 13th Chipareal and Acapulco were liberated almost simultaneously, and the Honduran assault met little resistance from the stunned Mexicans. On June 12th Tlascala fell, and on June 1th jubilant Honduran troops marched through Mexico City itself. The Honduran Army continued it's progress, and on July 15th 1912 Mexico offered terms of surrender.

hon81.jpg

The war went on, and with most of the country under occupation President Habsburg put together a peace proposal. He made his terms very simple; The Yucatan, Tabasco, Chipareal, Oajaca, Huascualo and Veracruz were to be ceded to Honduras, and Mexico was to become a satellite state. Utterly humiliated, the Mexican government had no option but to accept and to resign, replaced with a ruling cabal of Central Americans.

hon83.jpg

The peace, 25th September 1912.

Peace reigned, but it was to be shortlived. On November 29th 1913 Honduras turned her attention to Colombia, and smashed through the shaky Colombian lines and were soon right in the heart of the country. While the war was in progress there was an election, notable not for the winner but for the runner up. Juan Ángel Arias, the Partido Liberal candidate, polled less than 8% of the vote and the Liberal de Honduras leader Gutiérrez gained over 30%, marking a significant shift away from the dying Partido Liberal, who had been very vocal in opposing the wars in Colombia and Mexico much to the public's apparent disdain. The election of January 11th 1914 results were:

Dietrich Habsburg (Partido Conservador) - 10,401,852
Juan Ángel Arias (Partido Liberal) - 1,248,337
Rafael López Gutiérrez (Liberal de Honduras) - 5,198,931
Manuel Bonilla (Partido Nacional) - 178,094

Habsburg was given a mandate to continue the war, which was entering it's latter stages.

hon84.jpg

On May 25th Colombia surrendered, and nearly the entire country was annexed to Honduras barring the area around Bogota. However, a week later Honduran troops, following a secret missive from the President, re-entered Bogota and the Colombian government was dissolved, breaking the peace treaty much to Colombia's and indeed all of the region's shock. As it truned out, Honduras's actions in Colombia would by no means be a unique occurence over the next six years.

hon85.jpg

Colombia conquered.

Not a month after, Honduras invaded Ecuador, who were able to put up little resistance. They were annexed in December of 1914.

hon86.jpg

It was becoming apparent to all the President Habsburg was taking his title of Emperor very seriously indeed, a belief reinforced by the invasion of Peru in January 1915. The Peruvians thought bravely, but were outteched and outnumbered by Honduras. They were conquered in a campaign lasting nine months, and on New Years Day 1916 Bolivia met the same fate.

hon87.jpg

The New Habsburg Empire takes shape.

Honduras were unrivalled in South America, and took full advantage of that fact. At least, so they thought. On July 5th 1916 Honduras declared war on Chile. The Chileans put up far more of a fight than expected, eventually bringing to the field more than thrity divisions. After nearly a year of harsh fighting Honduras made peace, taking most of the top half of the country as well as the Chilean owned part of Tierra del Fuego. It was victory, but not the total triumph President Habsburg had been hoping for. However, the invasion of Paraguay (May 13th 1917) and of Argentina (November 16th 1917) were both complete victories, both nations being annexed without too many problems.

hon89.jpg

hon88.jpg

The rapid expansion of Honduras in South America stunned commentators both at home and abroad, and many were highly complementary of Honduras's treatment of the conquered lands, who were allowed to participate in the political process (unlike those in Madagascar or the Philippines.). In the election of 1918, during the Argentina campaign, more than 25,000,000 people voted, and the results were:

Dietrich Habsburg (Partido Conservador) - 14,821,332
Francisco Bertrand (Partido Liberal) - 2,427,391
Rafael López Gutiérrez (Liberal de Honduras) - 9,138,665
Manuel Bonilla (Partido Nacional) - 269,562

The public gave Habsburg another nod of approval, and once again the Liberal de Honduras was a strong second. Argentina was annexed a month later, and Uruguay soon followed, conquered completely by March 2nd 1919. Now, almost all of the formerly Spanish owned areas of South America were under the control of Honduras, apart from what remained of Chile and Venezuela, who on April 19th 1920. President Habsburg had been told by one of his advisors that the world was to end on January 1st 1921, so he made sure to finish the conquest before the end of the year. Venezuela put up little fight, and on October 26th they were annexed.

And so, here we must end, just as things were getting interesting. Isn't that always the way? As it turned out the world didn't end, luckily for everyone, but this story must, and so I can only thank you for reading. Good night, and good luck...or something.

Epilogue and notes

Just a few additional screenies from the game end:

hon92.jpg

My empire, 90% of it gained in the last six years. My badboy was about 350 by 1921. I also owned the Philippines and Madagascar, but you know what they look like. ;)

hon91.jpg

Some other information. My final rank was 20th, but only because most of South America had no railways, which meant my ind. score went from 1040 to under 700 during the period of the last update. I'm pretty sure that in 1.03c I would have easily completed the tech tree. Germany and Italy formed, and so I will give 1.04 a big thumbs up, this being my first full game under the new patch.

I can safely say that that was the funnest last ten years of a game of Victoria I've ever played.

I would also like to thank the following, for reading and commenting:

Must have been the deep breath before the plunge! ;) Looking at the war the elections were going I wonder if, in ten more years say (2 elections) Soto's party might have ended up in power. Their share of the vote was increasing all the time, and especially in that last election they were making headway (losing by the same number of votes, roughly, as before but in a much larger electorate).

An excellent AAR overall. Might we hope for an update in your EU or CK tales?

lifeless: Well, Mexico was a satellite, and Chile...well, the less said about Chile the better. ;)

Duke of Wellington: Thanks for reading and commenting. It feels great to actually complete an AAR. :D

anonymous4401, hasskugel: Thank you. :)

stnylan: Yes but they were increasing their vote entirely at the expense of the Partido Liberal. The Conservadors remained steady at about 60% for the last eight or nine elections. As for the other question, I will be concentrating entirely on the Danish Revival for the time being.
