HOMO UNIVERSALIS - BACKSTORY
Chinese Economic Crisis of 2051 was not brutal enough to throw the world in the Third World War - the Postindustrial Revolution has made WW2-style total war outdated and inefficient. However it was just brutal enough to begin the Era of Troubles. European Union was already devastated by the Immigrant Wars and the collapse of mainstream economy put its misery to the end; the United States of America were ravaged by the Second Civil War, among internal strife. When the First World was burning, Chinese nationalist maoism was stomped by the netizen revolution; when Russia was struggling to maintain Putin Dynasty on the throne of Federation, overpopulated Africa was imploding from famine and ethnic warfare, Saudis were desperately fighting for power and the Third Islamic State of Pakistan and Khorasan endangered the entire Indian subcontinent with the nuclear war - the world was close to the end indeed.

But the humanity refused to die. From the three decades of chaos, the new era of Man has come. The most feared powers of international organisations, cloud banking and nanoengineering have allowed UN 2.0 to prevent the global civilisation from falling - and by the year 2111 the same organisation has proclaimed Global Warming to be reduced to ‘manageable’ levels. Recovering lands lost to the Flood, recreation of global empires and rebuilding the Web took decades, but all has been finished. Everything calmed down...

And then the discovery of a small figure, socially awkward Physics graduate from Punjab, has brought the terror into the hearts of men. The gamma burst ray from faraway supernova is going to strike Blue Planet with unparalelled power before the end of 22nd century, devastating biosphere and atmosphere, and undoubtly wiping out most of life on the surface. Everything was going to disappear, all human effort and meaning.

However, homo sapiens is insane species and after the initial despair, the brightest minds realized that humanity can survive. The same extreme technological progress which has almost destroyed it before, now allows on the Exodus: leaving the planet and saving not only humanity, but a biological diversity of Earth. The greatest task in human history, preparing to the Exodus, took most of the century. All planetary resources and forces, all branches of human knowledge, from nanotechnology to bioengineering, allowed on a creation of a monumental Flying Worlds that would evacuate the planet.

Many people decided to stay on Earth and die with it; other decided to hibernate themselves along other species in undergroudn vaults, to try repopulate the planet after centuries. But most wanted to survive and was forced to enter Flying Worlds. To ensure the humanity will be no longer endangered by the old menaces, the Exodus has been divided on 16 separate civilisations, cultures and regional blocs, which left the planet in 16 separate directions in the Milky Way, using Faster Than Light technology. Those arks carrying nations and biomes have been sent to the most promising Earth-like planets...

One race, sixteen empires and federations representing all major powers and cultures of humanity, one goal: spread their ideals across the galaxy and ascend the higher level of sentience… Begin the era of Homo Universalis.

....

So, my idea has been simple. I want to create an 'all races are human' scenario setting for Stellaris which groups all major cultures, religions and nations of Earth, and distributes them between spacefaring factions which make some basic cultural/geopolitic sense while being roughly balanced and diverse.
Each of 16 factions will begin on a separate planet in a galaxy and then they will engage in grand strategy gameplay.

The following map depicts Earth AD 2200 (some national borders changed, I tried to be as plausible as possible), all nations being divided between 16 imperial or international factions. Words on the map don't describe factions in their entirety, they are adjectives - each Stellaris race is going to need some simple adjective to describe it, so inventing some fancy word was important for 'west african union' or 'those two separate european factions'.

PLAYABLE FACTIONS: NAMES AND REASONING EXPLAINED. Half of them don't have the written history yet; other half may be changed in the future when I'll finally get some info on the exact Stellaris governments, ethos choices and traits.

American - United States of America
Government: Indirect Democracy
Ethos: Fanatic Individualist, Xenophile

United States of America, with all their problems, have managed to stay powerful enough to survive dramatic era of change - both as a sovereign political entity and as an idea. Much has changed after Exodus and Americans neither are domineering superpower, nor do they live in their corner of old Earth. However, American traits of individualism, federal democracy, cultural melting pot and exploration have all survived. And all those features may become crucial in the human exploration of Universe, where freedom is truly unlimited.

Latino - Patria Grande Latina
Government: Military Junta
Ethos: Militarist, Individualist, Xenophile

For a long time, Latin America has been exploited by the outside forces or ravaged by the internal instability - but this time has passed. In the era of chaos, the old idea of Patria Grande - great united homeland of all Latin American people - has returned. Disappointed with corrupt, ineffective democracies, manipulated by foreign imperialist interests, Patria Grande rejected them all. It embraces diverse cultural and ethnic traditions of all its people, but under one condition - freedom must be fought for. As the ethos of Patria Grande says - only armed, brave people can be truly free.

Meridional - Meridan Kingdom
Government: Enlightened Monarchy
Ethos: Fanatic Pacifist, Collectivist

After many decades lost to violent coups, pointless revolutions and corrupt republics, Brazil reminded itself how it flourished under rule of monarchs. The reborn, enlightened monarchy has finally brought peace and stability to the greatest South American nation. Jealous of its success, Argentina and other Brazil's Mercosur partners have deepened their ties with it. Finally the Kingdom of Brazil got transformed into the Southern (Meridan) Kingdom, dominated by the ideology of Sossego - pacifism, nonviolence and community. Others may fight and bleed - Meridan Kingdom will grow in the meantime.

Transatlantic - Transatlantic Commonwealth
Government: Pacifist Bureaucracy
Ethos: Fanatic Xenophile, Pacifist

European Union has fallen among deep ideological struggle and economic crisis. Northern, Protestant part of it has looked with horror on resurgence of nationalist and xenophobic tendencies of its neighbors and instead chosen path of openness and tolerance for foreign and new. Joined by Canada and Australia, Nordic Pact transformed into Transatlantic Commonwealth known for its efficiency at guarding quality of life of its diverse citizens. Other organisations may rely on old sentiments and fresh paranoid fears, Commonwealth instead believes in cultivating human potential.

Eurotopian - Res Publica Eurotopia
Government: Direct Democracy
Ethos: Individualist, Materialist, Xenophobe

European Union has fallen among deep ideological struggle and economic crisis. Southern, mostly Catholic part of it looked with disdain at the political correctness of its northern neighbors, and rejected that ultra-progressivism.\n\nAnd thus the concept of Eurotopia, return to the European cultural traditions, has gained enough popularity to unite Romanic and Eastern nations afraid of the modern turmoil. Res Publica values freedom and tradition more than safety and equality, and as a first human direct democracy, its people are ready to guard reborn Europe from any outside threat.

Pravoslavic - Pravoslav Imperium
Government: Despotic Empire
Ethos: Militarist, Materialist, Xenophobe

Yet again contrary to the western expectations, Russia managed to adapt to a new era. Not only that, but other Eastern nations joined that resurrection as well. The ideals of deteriorating European Union failed to convince Russians, who were instead promoting an empire based on the resurrected ideas of Panslavism and conservative integrity. Now, Pravoslav Empire unites ancient Eastern civilisation as a last successor to the great old Eastern Rome. And as the old Rome, these people are blessed both by the great martial prowess and intellectual tradition to use them to change the course of history.

Khorasani - Khorasani Covenant
Government: Military Democracy
Ethos: Militarist, Materialist, Individualist

Turkic and Iranic peoples have a close and great history, and that Turko-Persian legacy helped to connect rising powers between waters of Indus and Bosphorus. Countless great civilisations have risen in the ancient Middle East, and the Khorasani Covenant is determined to create the new golden era of science and civilisation. Born among the great violence and surrounded by enemies, that great military republic is ready to fight for rights of all its diverse nations. The worthy successor of Achaemenids, Safavids, Tamerlane and Ottomans has finally come.

Arabic - Mudriyah al-Arabiyah
Government: Theocratic Oligarchy
Ethos: Fanatic Spiritualist, Militarist

Arabic world has suffered for a long time enough, to conclude neither archaic kingdoms or forced solutions from outside will help it. First Imamate unites all Sunni Arab nations of the world under one banner, governerd by wise religious scholars instead of decadent politicians. Adapted to the new era of scientific pursuit, faith of a Prophet hasn't been that strong and pure for a long time, and there is finally a worthy state to spread it. Though welcome and respectful for foreigners, people of Imamate know that sooner or later somebody will try to destroy the Truth... And it will be defended with a sword.

Guinean - Free Guinean Republic
Government: Indirect Democracy
Ethos: Individualist, Spiritualist, Xenophile

West Africa was home of countless African peoples, empires and civilisations but only Free Guinean Republic has managed to resurrect its glory in the new age. Violent ideologies and demagogic despots have time and time again failed to adress the issues of West African people. New, democratic federation has abandoned all those fanatic mirages, focusing on what truly matters - building future and prosperity for its children. Free Guinean Republic has no pompous militaristic obsessions, or crazy ideologic inclinations - instead, it focuses on the needs and issues of a common man..

Swahilli - Swahilli Economic Zone
Government: Plutocratic Oligarchy
Ethos: Pacifist, Materialist, Collectivist

East African Community, powerful economic bonds with China and common legacy of Swahilli trading civilisation have managed to spawn a formidable economic powerhouse on the western coast of Indian Ocean. In the modern era, the main function of civilisation's success is its economic growth, and that's the purpose and focus of Swahilli Economic Zone. This corpocratic union doesn't care about ethnic divisions or armed conflicts, but about growth and development, and that's precisely what it has been so succesfull so far. Faraway barbarians may fight - serene SEZ will become rich instead.

Bantu - Lenqaba Bantu
Government: Military Dictatorship
Ethos: Fanatic Xenophobe, Militarist

Arisen from the wrath against globalisation and irresponsibility of the rich, evil faraway men, Bantu Defense Perimeter united nations of Central and South Africa against the manipulative world - and gained true independence. Time and time again cheated by the economic and environmental opression, people know now as Bantu rebelled. Under the banner of their Leader, they have established new homeland, and guard it from foreign incursion. The path to the stars now lays open before Bantu people - thus they shall inherit them. And their determination can't be underestimated.

Bharatan - Bharatan Consensus
Government: Religious Democracy
Ethos: Spiritualist, Pacifist, Xenophobe

Indian subcontinent, the humanity's heart and soul, was for too long in the shadow of other humanity's powers. But now Bharata is ready to rise once more. Religious and national radicalism were as marginalized as socialism and globalism when the idea of Akhand Bharat (Greater India) came into play. Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, and all countless ethnicities and faiths of India, now stand united against the outside enemy. Bharatan Consensus is a federal democracy concerned primarily with preservation of millenias-long legacy of India... And this time, not allowing alien empires to sack it.

Mandala - Mandalan Harmony
Government: Divine Mandate
Ethos: Fanatic Collectivist, Spiritualist

In the transhuman era, Buddhist world needed a new reformation, and it got it. Mandalan Harmony (from the ideology of Mandala - symbol of universe, and of historical Buddhist empires) is a centralized theocracy united in its collectivist social system. The whole world may drown in its hunger for blood, money and power, and suffer existence devoid of any meaning - the Harmony focuses on the human soul instead, and its inner energy allowed it to rival even the biggest of the world's powers. The future belongs not to the strongest or most wealthy creatures, but to the most Enlightened.

Zhongua - Ecumene of Zhongua
Government: Science Directorate
Ethos: Fanatic Materialist, Collectivist

China turned into leviathan powerful enough that its crisis brought an entire world to knees - as well as its usually succesfull ruling regime. Maoism stood no chance in the postindustrial era of technology, but neither could old empires work now. Finally, 2500 years after persecution of Confucian scholars, the powerful intellectual capital of Chinese civilisation got a second chance and installed world's first and major technocracy, uniting the entire Chinese Nation (Zhongua Minzu) under the task of pursuing knowledge; as there is no higher form of humanity than science, and no civilisation better than it than Zhongua.

Nusantara - Nusantaran Association
Government: Moral Democracy
Ethos: Pacifist, Spiritualist, Xenophile

Far from the political turmoil, people of Malay Archipelago had to unite against effects of climate changes. Combating global warming, ocean and monsoons were priority for Malaya, instead of fighting other nations. From environmental cooperation between Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines, Nusantara Association was born - Nusantara meaning "archipelago". Success of the Association at combating nature and ethno-religious strife has helped to transform rising Malayan economies into one of the major powerhouses. Now ancestors of the ancient sailors are ready to explore greater Ocean.

Horangi - Horangi Duocracy
Government: Despotic Hegemony
Ethos: Collectivist, Xenophobe, Materialist

For a long time Korea and Japan were bitter rivals, despite being each other's closest siblings on the planet. The dramatic events of 21st century - terror of Chinese domination, fall of North Korean regime, withdrawal of American imperial power and Japanese economic crash - brought them closer together. Their legendary ethos of work and sacrifice allowed the least populous of global superpowers to match wasteful rivals in power, and yet again both nations became synonymous with technology and order. Now, that they are finally able to leave overpopulated Earth, the entire Cosmos lays open in front of Horangi dual empire.

Is the eurotapian or the transatlantic nation the conservative one? I was about to say the boundaries of the two nations were pretty weird if based around one being conservative and one being liberal, but then again, it is in the future. If the transatlantic one is liberal, it might be worth trading Iberia for Scandinavia, as it feels better when it is similar when it is slightly based around the current world situation.

Yeah, I had some problems with dividing European Union (I felt united EU is way too big). Generally my idea is that Transatlantic nation groups former colonial empires and Commonwealth and is more ethnically diversed & liberal, while Eurotopia is more conservative and defensive (against both neighbors + Arabic faction), and includes more land-based powers.

The problematic nations in this divisions are:
Sweden - well modern Sweden is (in?)famous for being very liberal but HU happens in the far future so everything may change by then :p
Germany - although I still think it fits its easter land-based cautious neighbors more than transoceanic colonial empires

I think a North-South split would suit more than a West-East split. Since most countries anyways have the same borders like our time, it would be weird to change the culture and political views of several countries, unless you write some good lore on it. Then I would have no problems. The thing is that Canada, Great Britain and the Scandinavian countries is more similar than Canada, Great Britain, France and Spain.

Quite possible. How would you personally divide Europe (+associated 'Western' nations) for a settting like this?

The Nordic/Transatlantic Commonwealth: Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, the Scandinavian Countries, Iceland, Finland, Netherlands, Belgium and Germany perhaps?
The Eurotapian/Catholic/Papal Defense Initiative: Portugal, France, Spain, Italy, Austria, Hungary, Poland and the Baltic States.

Okay, I thought about it and that's better division indeed. I adapted it approximately. Catholic - Protestant (or Germanic - nongermanic) split.

The exception is Finland because it is Nordic but not Scandinavian and is culturally closer to Baltic states, linguistically to Hungary and geopolitically to Eastern Europe.
Also, I've decided to make Bavaria independent and put it in the Eurotopian 'catholic' faction because Bavaria is not only catholic and more conservative than rest of Germany, it has even separatist traditions and separatist movements (and a bit separate identity from the rest of Germany).

Switzerland, with its isolation, neutrality and federal/democratic nature IMO fits Transatlantic protestant/germanic faction and its memes better than Eurotopian 'let's defend European heritage!' faction ;)

I think he was more asking why they even joined a faction in the first place. I think it isn't entirely unreasonable to have some countries that don't really fit in in the major factions be left as small factions that don't appear in game(not everyone needs to have space aspirations).

First off, excellent idea for a mod! I love me some aliens and most of my playthroughs will be alien, but I love speculative history even more. Would like to be able to run this mod and generate alien races farther away in the galaxy as well, really. Anyway, onto my thoughts. Finland I think really belongs with the Transatlantic group. They are much closer to the Scandinavian nations nowadays than to their closer cultural and linguistic relatives and are very much a western/northwestern European nation. Also geopolitically I'd argue they're more western than eastern as well. If the Eurotopians are all about defending European values or what have you then Finland fits much better with the Transatlantics. Possibly France as well. They even sort of fit with the Germanic/Non-Germanic split, being Frankish in origin. However, they have been moving in I believe a more conservative direction so I could see them fitting in with the Eurotopians. I might even suggest dividing France into Transatlantic Northern France and Eurotopian Southern France/Aquitane/Provence, maybe Brittany or Normandy with the Transatlantics as well, like you did to Spain or Belgium. Most independence movements aren't as strong in the rest of Western Europe as in Spain but plenty certainly exist

I assume Cyprus ended up with Transatlantic or Khorasan, Antilles split between Latino/Transatlantic/America and microstates in Europe with their local regional powers? Also there's one nation in the Shahdom with no name given, northwest of Kashmir, and Kuwait is colored Khorasani but in the sunni theocracy according to their description.

Now I have a few questions regarding names of factions...

1) Does anybody have the better name for 'West Africans' than stupid 'Ivorean' neologism?
2) Does anybody have the better name for 'Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Singapore' than stupid 'Holangi' neologism?
3) Should I use the adjectives 'Nusantara', 'Khorasan' or 'Nusantaran', 'Khorasani'?
4) What is the coolest/most appropriate word: Pravoslav, Pravoslavic or Pravoslavian? :p

5) Yes I know 'Transatlantic' faction includes Australia and NZ which are far away from Atlantic! I will explain that somehow :p

1) Unfortunately no. Most large empires in the area were a little bit farther north so you can't really even name them after one of them
2) Holangi is good. Assuming Korea initiated the formation of the Mechocratic Alliance I could see the Korean name becoming the most popular one.
3) Nusantaran and Khorasani 100%. They sound way better and, at least in the case of Khorasani, make more sense
4) Pravoslavic and Pravoslav both seem good, not Pravoslavian. Doesn't make as much sense and I don't think it sounds as good. Pravoslavic and Pravoslav both sound cool but I'm having a hard time deciding which I like more

Praise be unto Krajzen. Krajzen is good, Krajzen is great. I love the idea and concept; humans vs humans is always welcome, as too often science fiction presents a united human front when there really shouldn't be one.

One thing you should try to avoid though is simply grouping together nations due to geographical proximity, even if it means horrific bordergore. Unions should be cultural and economic rather than "it looks good on a map", as well as be based on necessity rather than voluntary union, IMO of course. I can see you've subverted this a bit with the transatlantic and american factions, but refining it further would be ideal. Of course if you're just inventing justifications it's no biggie.

ALSO YOU MUST CALL JAPAN/KOREA/SINGAPORE/TAIWAN RISING SUN. THERE CAN NEVER BE TOO MANY FACTIONS CALLED RISING SUN.

i would change Transatlantic to Commonwealth and base it on the current Commonwealth minus India. fyi, Rwanda and Mozambique have joined the Commonwealth without having had any historical ties to England, so i would expect other countries to want to do this in your future world.

Most independence movements aren't as strong in the rest of Western Europe as in Spain but plenty certainly exist.

Not sure about Finland, for a while I'll leave them in Eurotopia... But I think France should stay in Eurotopia, splitting it into half is a bit improbable IMO and National Front is very popular here recently; also, France would break 'Germanic domination' in the Transatlantic faction. This nation imo fits the entire 'traditional European values' theme of Eurotopia.

Cyprus is mostly Greek Orthodox and I'll rather make it Pravoslavic :D As for Antilles - frankly I didn't even think about such small islands (these are going to be spacefaring factions after all). This Khorasani nation is formed from north Pakistani tribes and yeah I forgot to seek a proper name for it. I am not sure what to do with Kuwait, probably it'll be included in Arabic faction.

I lolled at Israel and the US being the only members of their faction. The only two nations who can be best friends on the basis of not wanting to be friends with anyone.

For some reason, I think of old man's war when I see this map, where the great majority of space colonists come from the poorer countries cause those are the only regions from which people are willing to risk being eaten by space aliens in mass in return for a chance at a better life.

"The attack by the vicious Kylreg was repelled by the United Nations fleet, saving the colonies of New Rio and Tokyo II from the same horrible fate that befell the Botswana Colony weeks ago. The United Nations fleet has pressed the advance against the alien menace, and expects to regain control of the Botswana Colony within days although the Kylreg are not know for leaving survivors. The United States has suggested that a new military facility and starbase be constructed at the remains of the Botswana colony, partly at its own expense, which would prove capable of extending the 'Golden Line," ie, that area of space within which a U.N. rapid reaction force can respond within thirty-three hours. If the American proposal is accepted, the colony would be renamed Liberty Prime and transfered to American control...and the Bantu Confederation would be compensated with three lush newly discovered worlds which lie about twenty-three and twenty-seven days travel beyond the the Golden Line as it now stands...."
