I was a bit surprised when I turned my attention back to the remnants of the HRE. Just what happened while I was busy in India?

From what I can tell, France led the Catholic side in a war against the Protestant emperor and won. The only problem was that there are no Catholic states left in the HRE (apart from Austria, who are in a PU under me), and since no one seems to like France and Spain are hated by the remaining European tags (since I fed them southern France and Italy--will be PUing them as soon as I get the chance as we share a dynasty), it seems the electors got creative when they picked the new Cahtolic emperor--the ruler of a tiny South American tribe :sleep:

well. you aready explained it yourself - the emperor has to be catholic, and nations outside the HRE can be elected emperor, thats not new. they just have a malus. the elections are between all catholic monarchies, and with france and castile being hated (and hate beign a very large malus) it fell to whoever had the best relations and dilomatic reputation.

Oh, I know why it happened--I just find it hilarious that the electors would turn to a South American tribe to find the new emperor. It makes you wonder what'd happen if there were no Catholic tags left--would the empire simply dissolve, or would the game force the selection of someone else (fond memories of Muslim emperors)?

Good to know. There was another glitch (presumably a bug assuming it can be replicated) where the HRE interface just vanished. It came back when I declared war on Cologne, so I'm guessing that it disappeared because the emperor was a tag I hadn't discovered (when I declared war on Cologne they entered the war on their side, so their capital was automatically revealed).
