Holy Roman Empire election process

How does it work ? Im playing portugal, and despite that every elector hates Spain and loves me (close to +200 in alla cases) they still always elect the spaniards.
Can´t you be emperor as portugese ? YEah, im catholic, and the most powerful country as well. Not that it matters, but it´s annoying

By the way, the fact that you can gain vassals that are not in an alliance with you, is that a bug or a feature ? It´s i have 10 or so vassals all over the place, before the last patch I seldom had any at all.

I didn't play yet, but normally, the Empereur must have a territory in the Empire. Historically, Habsurg did have (Austria, Bohemia, etc.).

Electors assumed functions in Empire. For example George of Hanover, future King of Great-Britain (George I), was secretary or treasurer of the Empire.

Well, i own some of the terrirory and more than 50 % of it is my vassals, and the rest have +200 relations to me. So there must be something else...

I got a feeling it's all up to diplomacy. A very small state that is great at diplomacy might get it's king elected several times.

Also, if you've taken any of the provinces in HRE by force, you will not be elected as Emperor.

Hmm, that might be it. I Crushed the papal states , but they are not part of HRE, but I got some french province close to lothringen (to be able to annex peacfully later on), I can´t really remember if that was part of HRE now, it shouldn´t be, if they hadn´t taken it from someone before.
Ah, shoot, i´ll just have to conquer the world instead

Well that can't be good if your supposed to be a good christian.
I would find it odd if you did become HR Emperor after a move like that.

I would find it odd if you did become HR Emperor after a move like that.

But remember - there where some theories of emperor or pope being the real representative of god. Also there was the 'sacco di roma' - the plundering of Rome by the emperors (Karl V) troops in 1527 in a war against an alliance of France, the Pope, Venice and Florence.

You definitely don't need to have provinces in the HRE to become emporer. I have controlled th entire HRE at one point (every province) and still not been elected HRE (because I was protestant).

That let Spain troop across my entire empire at will

I had another bizarre moment last night with EU In the same month a new spanish king got to be elected as the emperor of the HRE, and in the same month I got a new monarch and He got elected, all in the same month ???? But Now im the emperor as well
So I celebrated this by kicking the spaniards off this planet, I took everything they had, annexed their allies and saved the game, I had all stars but couldn´t annex them, so I edited the savegame and removed their major status (diplomacy screen showed that it worked), but I still couldn´t annex them although I had all stars. Must I do this before starting the war or is it something about me annexing the allies, beacause it still said spain was the leader of the alliance but they had no allies

Comments anyone ?

You probably didn't do it correctly.

I think I did as it had silver shields on the diplomacy screen instead of gold. And I had all the starts as well.

How much countries are electing the Empire in the game?(because, in reality, the number increased between 1492-1792)

Good, I certainly won´t wanna hear it more than once really
Your FAQ says nothing about savegames explicitly, just editing the startgame, and that I should delete the countries, however the countries are twice in the .eug file, first are those choseable countries, but just removing them there just makes them unplayable, I still couldn not annex them. And chaning from major=yes to major=no like other FAQs suggest gives the silver shields that minors are supposed to have but it still didn´t work....
It´s just to much work to kick the spaniards ass over and over and try which works...

The electors must be slightly mad sometimes.

In my last GC in 1609 the Ucraine declared its independence from Poland. The Austrian Emperor died shortly after and for the next 40 years we had Ucrainian emperors - untill the Ucraine got sacked by Russia.

Someone else was speaking about this same problem and I think Hartman addressed this in the last day or so (maybe in FAQs, not sure). His comment was that you had to set another line in that same file where you change major status, to:
set_conq_capital=1
(probably normally reads '0')
or something of that nature. I will see if I can see where that post was and leave a pointer here for you.
