Sorry happends in history writting.
Stad Houder stand-houder (Hold- fearm) to good to be true and it isn't.
Like Holland The name is said to be transformed from Holt(hout)wood-land.
The combination of The words STAND-HOUDER do not appear in Nederdiets(Niederdeutsch).
Ans surtenly this word combination Has never been used as a title
for a City Magistrate.
The word Stadhouder is no more Than a Flemish translation of It Frensh equivalent for Flanders was a Frensh fief from 843 When it was attatsched to The West-Franken Emp.
The Flemische people ment thus The Frensh militairy commander in there city.
Sorry about This hope You won't hold it against Me.
Friendly greetings.:D
It is not derived from "stand", but from "steede", which could mean a stead (a position), a city or a shelter (like a fortress). This word was used interchangeably with "stad" (depending on location mostly). The stadtholders were really instituted under the Burgundians to reform the governmental structure as the areas ruled by nobles were scattered throughout the area (as an example William of Orange had many lands scattered throuhout the Netherlands, but also in France).
BtW not every province had a stadtholder, iirc Brabant never had one for example.

But I believe Brabant was not a province in the Dutch republic but a "generaliteitsland" and had no seat or voice in the Generale Staten.
Very true, but I also meant under the Burgundians and Hapsburgs. A stadtholder wasnt necessary as the centre of government was in Brussel, which was in Brabant

Rather logical then considering that the stadtholder was the steadholder for the government in provinces. As the government sat in Brabant they didn`t need one there obviously :D
