A simple suggestion: the world grid presumably exists, but is invisible and tools won't snap-to it. I'm guessing that's because it would create points too close together, or possibly accidentally allow silly zoning.
My suggestion is that the world grid be used to snap-to when you are performing certain actions (anything that's not zoning in fact) when you hold down the control key.
Additionally, why not have 'regular' angles (every 45 degrees) be snapped-to when holding down shift?

Huge +1 for roads snapping to regular angles using shift.

Other than roads (and railroads), what else would snap to a grid? Power and water/sewage services, I'm not terribly concerned about. Windmills are circular, water pumps rely on terrain, and many of the rest must go next to a road anyway, in which case you're tied to a grid through the road.

There actually isn't a world grid, I'm sorry.
Thanks for clearing that up! :)

Have you noticed the snapping toggle that's the leftmost button on the road tool sub selections, next to curved roads? By setting it off you get more freedom to place roads. When it's on, roads snap to straight angles.
Only relative to another road, when being drawn from said road. The real question is, what else would it be relative to? Well, it could be relative to the edges of the tiles or the map. But who's to say this is going to be "straight" or "right" angles with respect to the actual contents of the map?

Some of us might just have to unlearn the old-school grid based thinking. :p You can think in terms of a grid once you put down a point of reference (e.g. a road), but until then, maybe not. In the real world, you'd just have to pick a direction to start with and take it from there.

That said, it doesn't currently snap to 45 degrees (although if drawn on a straight piece of road, it starts to curve below 45, as opposed to on corners), so maybe that could be added.

World grid exiting or not it really would be nice to have some sort of toggle for a tile grid\ruler overlay over the area in view, would save a ton of build-crap-offbyone-destroy-rebuild issues.

Having some sort of snap would be very helpful in laying out the highways in the Map editor. Getting the spacing correct between each direction of the highway is a bit hard to do without placing junctions. It would also be useful to be able to snap to a specific compass direction.

What one could do is introduce a 2D grid on top of the world (similar to the zoning grid), where you can change the orientation of the entire grid yourself. That way, if you want a grid and a very particular north-south orientation to use with roads, you can do so.

I'm sure a modder can solve this though.

I would love 15 degree snapping, and toggling on a grid (like in the asset editor). I saw the above post stating that there isn't a grid, but we really do need one. It also has to be relative to the world (the 25 cubes we build city in), because that way, you can build two perfectly parallel roads without them actually touching. It would also be good for that world grid to have bold/different colored lines every 5/10/50 squares
