Hello,

I am planning a casual Sambas->Lanfang game and I am wondering if there are any Hokkien-speaking Chinese players in the Community?

I would like to kindly ask you for your advice on how to name provinces in Malaya? I am espiecially interested in Sambas, Pontianak, Meliau (Sambas starting provinces), Malacca, SIngapore, Bintan, Johor, Selangor, Perak, Kalapa/Jakarta and other provinces in the region that are known to you.

I would really appreciate it.

Thanks!

I don't speak Hokkien, but you could just look up the Mandarin Chinese names of these places, and then just find out how the chinese characters are pronounced in Hokkien/Taiwanese/Minnan Chinese. This is likely to get you the correct names, as Hokkien is not written differently from Mandarin.

Thank you for explanation! :)

I've found this outdated mod and when I browsed in files I found province naming for Malaya! - for Ming, Yuan and Qing. And something called "East_asian" which is also chinese, but no idea where is the difference between this and Ming... Maybe Ming did not use Mandarin? Again, sorry for my near zero knowledge in this.
Hakka province naming was done only for China proper sadly... Real bummer. :(

EDIT: Ok, so apparently Ming used Mandarin, and "east_asian" in culture.txt file (base game) is the name for the whole chinese culture group (inc. vietnamese, korean, hakka, min, jin, gan, xiang, tibetan etc. But the dynamic province naming for "east_asian" is (I might be wrong) wholely chinese?
And then, korean and tibetan is mentioned again separately in the same file. Very confusing...

I check the file, both "Ming" and "East_asian" are Mandarin. Maybe the latter used modern Mandarin names while "Ming" used historical names (most names are the same).

Thanks. And what do you think about province naming in the attached file? Would this be more proper? It's probably cantonese (wild guess), which is more similar to Hakka? (right?)

CZH stands for Zhou. Their capital is in Yunnan province though...

government = monarchy
add_government_reform = chinese_warlord
government_rank = 1
technology_group = chinese
religion = confucianism
primary_culture = cantonese
capital = 662 # Yunnan

Also, I've found two chinese australian colonial names, any idea what they mean? I've found nothing on the web...

names = {
trigger = {
culture_group = east_asian
is_emperor_of_china = no
}
name = "CN_Zhangtu"
}
names = {
trigger = {
is_emperor_of_china = yes
}
name = "CN_Xianshan"

There is whole page on wiki on Xiangshan though...

EDIT:
This is for colonial California - do these names mean anything?

names = {
trigger = {
culture_group = east_asian
is_emperor_of_china = no
}
name = "CN_DadongPendi"
}
names = {
trigger = {
is_emperor_of_china = yes
}
name = "CN_Xianmo"
}

The mod said "Dynamic province names are no longer limited to historical province names, the fantasy province names are also included".;)
I checked Chinese version of this mod.
Zhangtu: I didn't find it, it's Zhourao (周饶) in Chinese version.
Xianshan: 仙山 (fairy mountain)
DadongPendi: 大东盆地 (great east basin)
Xianmo: 仙漠 (fairy desert)

Cantonese maybe more similar but still not the same to Hakka language. I'm sorry I don't have more knowledge about it because I speak none of them. o_O

"Pontianak (Chinese: 坤甸, pinyin: Kūndiān, Hakka: Khuntîen [...]"

OK, so I now know how to name at least 1 province in Hakka... ;)
I guess I'll use mandarin for the rest.

Edit:

Singapore

Sîn-kâ-phô in Hakka (in Mandarin: Danmaxi)

Malacca
Mandarin
(Pinyin): Mǎliùjiǎ
(Zhuyin): ㄇㄚˇ ㄌㄧㄡˋ ㄐㄧㄚˇ
Cantonese (Jyutping): maa luk gaap
Hakka (Sixian, PFS): Mâ-liuk-kap
Min Nan (POJ): Má-la̍k-kah

I am not sure though, if this is how you should pronounce these words, or is it the way they are written in latin alphabet. No idea.
