With some exceptions (most notably the achievements), using the word "meme" to describe HoI4 kinda annoys me. For me a meme has to be a well-established internet reference of humoristic nature. So as long as they stick to quality history-references, I don't mind, even if some ideas do seem far-fetched.
- Newer focus trees have been great. Focus trees are basically required for nations to be interesting as there's only really a few cheese strategies available to nations with the default focus tree due to the guarantee system. People complaining about "meme focuses" are prioritizing history > gameplay to a fault. Giving Poland nukes through focuses doesn't matter because nukes do very little in this game. They're glorified confetti bombs that are better suited to sniping individual airports than anything else. The amount of uproar the recent Poland dev diary had was ridiculous.
Grumpiness aside, I do agree with that point. Sure, there could be a few more branches of lighter alt-history, but I feel that all these whack routes really do give the player options and help break the monotony of a stricter WWII-sim. When playing on non-historical, you never know who's gonna fight who, nor how, and as such you're always on your toes. Really exciting!
And the nukes... they are what they are, but they are fun! And they also help speed up the end-game a bit. So if they ever rework nukes (which they should), I hope they keep the old style available as an option. It would also be cool if the AI used them more. I'm still dissapointed that the off-map reactor was removed though, but there are mods for that, right?
