How's the soviet AI doing in the current patch (1.6.2 a3a6)? It seems that when I am playing, it does the front shuffling thing still, but only for the first few months of the war. Then it stalls the Germans before Moscow.

It still does it but less and randomly it seems. it might have something to do with the fronts in Asia shifting when China falls and the Allies start to wage war there. But it's unclear.

Yeah, I hope they fix this as it has been happening since 1.3 at least, probably since the game's release.

It's nowhere near as bad for the German AI. Most of their units seem to hold position. 70% of their army actually just seems to stay in western Europe during the war. Kind of makes the state of the Soviet Union seem even more pathetic.

There was either Soviet training or strategic redeployment when the war first started, because about half of their divisions had no org when it first started. The same thing happened this run than what happened before. The center was pretty well defended and the Germans didn't make it past Minsk for a long time. The south was lightly defended and the Romanians got to Rostov no problem. The north was completely wide open and the Germans took Leningrad almost unopposed. The front stalled there for around a year until the Soviets broke. Soviets capitulate in Jan of 44.

They explicitly changed the German AI to be better in 1.6

Which means they should easily be able to do the same for the Soviet Union. The template already exists and Germany is proof of that. I just don't understand what is difficult about not having them constantly move half of their army around. I mean how hard is it to code the AI NOT to keep taking guys off the front line to go and garrison random places in Russia? It serves absolutely no purpose.

Yeah the Soviet AI is really puzzling. Really all it needs to do is to spam out massive amounts of infantry and assign it to its western border. I don't think the AI uses fallback lines, but maybe teach the AI to put some divisions into one behind a river after the front is covered. Whatever code they are using that is making them constantly re balance the front is doing far more harm than good.

That is because the Germans don't have a massive land border with 2 powers. So it is easier to fix their AI. It is not that easy to code an AI. Proof? Just look at what happens when you open up a second front with Germany, and it gains traction. Most of the time you can literally walk around their divisions.

Also like to add that if you nuke Japan as the US (maybe any nation) they surrender, peacetalks and WHABAM suddenly Germany occupies all of Japan, even if they don't have divisions in Japan when Japan surrenders.

This should also get fixed, same as fixing Belgian Congo being occupied by germany when Belgium capitulates (but is still in the war as part of allies).

To fix Japan rolling over China you should make Japan and China more similar in land strength, not just tell the Japanese AI to take it easier on them.

To fix Japan rolling over China you should make Japan and China more similar in land strength, not just tell the Japanese AI to take it easier on them.

And then you don't have any semblance of a Pacific War besides ships sinking ships because Japan does not have the strength to even invade the Dutch East Indies.

It is good for Japan to be stronger in land, for me the best balance would be for China to be able to hold at least 40% of its land into 1942, but still giving Japan enough of an advantage to send troops elsewhere.

If there were any reason to WANT a WW1 trench warfare style front to take place in HOI4, its China.

I think I see what is wrong with SU. I observed them leading up to war. They may not have had as good of a defense as they could have, but they had 7 mostly full armies of 18 width infantry on the front line. Certainly enough to significantly slow the axis down. They also had them pretty well spaced on the German border and the Romanian border. As soon as war was declared the AI immediately recalculated where they needed troops and how the armies were composed and you had strategic redeployment everywhere. and they couldn't recover. Really they didn't even need to chance anything. Literally if I turned the AI off right before war was declared they would have done better.
