Really want to know, is there an espionage system in HOI4? I've been watching the world war wednesday series, and seen nothing. Pretty strange, I thought it would almost definitely be in the game, considering the time period. DLC material, I suppose

I hope they do a sort of passive espionage system and a slowly build up capacity. I could see HOI IV with a system that contuinisly does give effect, sort of like how production lines work. Getting your espionage to focus like getting info in trade lines for convoy raiding, sabotaging industry, getting a bonus in land combat, or counter espionage etc. Thats what i hope for something to give you mostly passive bonuses.

So we'll have to wait and pay for a DLC to get a decent espionage system ??!
Seriously, that would suck.

It's such an important part of the game, with so many possibilities, that I'm glad they're not even bothering with it right now - I'd far rather have a dedicated dlc that does it full justice than a half-assed 'that'll-do' system from the start which never really gets improved.

They certainly have an intelligence aspect, but that is not the same as espionage. And they haven't shown much regarding intelligence on the stream yet.

Based on the UI (unless they loop political power into an espionage system), it doesn't look like their is any resource for espionage (such as spies in previous games).

yup - I was thinking just the same thing; atm there isn't really any 'currency' which can pay for your espionage effort. PP isn't suitable, you can't make spies in factories and nor can you research them, but those are the only levers we have. Maybe that conundrum is why they put the whole subject on the back shelf for now?

In the video today(WWW part 3) Jacob hovered over the soviet national focus and there was something to the effect: "Our decryption level is not enough to see what this focus offers. Research better decryption". Now granted thats just my summary of what it said but you get the gist. There was also another screen that provided a range of the possible number of divisions Germany had. I saw airplanes and more icons on this screen as well. So we do have some intel that is most likely based off of some research and/or our relationship with that country. (It was before he joined the German faction.) While this isn't a true espionage function at least it's something. Plus we do not know the full details yet so there may be more there that we cannot see.

I can live with the fact to wait for it, just I would like they consider that their customers have paid for it yet, and so provide such a feature then for free, not for an extra 20 euros...

eh? I'm not quite sure I follow? Whatever is in the base game is what you pay for - assuming you to decide to buy it after studying what it contains. Anything not in the base game is therefore, by definition, something you have not paid for.

I can kind of see how this makes sense, and not.

If you look at a lot of the earlier games, EU4 and CK2, usually a "functional" system is deployed but then through DLC they improve on it greatly... I'm not game developer, but I do work with project management. One thing that comes to mind is time, it takes time to code and get something ready. I mean unless you have a thousand trained monkey's right out of college, and even then it might not even work.

Basically it sounds like they want to get the product [HOI4] out the door so it can start to bring in revenue, because right now it's not generating any. Then they can focus on DLC which in turn gives them more revenue stream for improving on an existing product. I kind of like this way of doing business, we get a base game and then DLC over a 2-5 year period (depending on popularity and how long the Developer wants to support it). This polishes it and makes it better.... Remember HOI3 or EU4 when it was just the base content? I can't imagine playing those games without at least 2-3 DLC's added on, it's a good, stable and nicely polished game now. But because they had the revenue stream to support the engineers making the DLC. I'd much rather have DLC like this than have a new game ever couple of years that I pay $50-60 for that is usually rushed and lacks the polished features.
