Either way, the point is still, that no one likes toggles, or sliders, that come with bonuses and maluses to cover up bad AI routines.

Great to know you can read the mind of every single HOI player there ever was. Arrogant or just like using hyperbole?

The weird thing is, I actually like some bonuses accompanied by toggles, like: "Would you like to install this malware with the program you intend to install?" [proceed to untick toggle].

Operation Sonnenblume. All the patches are being named after WW2 Operations. I do find it a bit odd they used the English rather than the German for this one, but I'm pretty sure that's what it is.

Okay, makes sense. A lot. :D

In reflection, PDX is attempting to address the primary concern, to make the game more "challenging" (i.e. fun). I'm just disappointed that pretty much everything they have described has already been available via mods. Its a fine line they have to consider though - they want their Vanilla game to one day be great, to stand on its own. Perhaps a decent to large amount of the community doesn't even bother with mods. I'm not sure PDX wants to start necessitating the need for mods, or having to endorse certain mods for this game title. Considering this project's resource constraints, maybe they should?.
The vast majority of players don't use mods.

Agreed, especially prior to HOI4. However, steam integration has made it so easy now. I think every single player should heavily consider it for this game, as a few out there without any doubt improve the current user experience. I'm currently preferring AI Research and Division tweaks, as it doesn't change much that the human SP player would notice - other mods with new events and units are cool, but add to the complexity of the system which is currently performing not so well.

I agree in the general sense of using mods being much easier now. I myself have started using mods for this and other games since Steam has indeed taken most of the pain out of doing so.

However, there is one drawback to the specific mod which you endorse. It due to limitations must change the stating templates for both the AI and the human player. This puts me at the mercy of what the author has decided to do with the starting templates for whichever country I am playing. I didn't like what had been done to the German templates preferring to modify them myself as the war goes on. I liked them even less when I tried that mod as Japan.

There are other mods, however, which have almost zero downside to them (though they also have less impact on the game). One of these is the No Mans Land mod. Obviously any mod which only adjusts the UI or appearance is harmless and should be used without hesitation to suit one's personal tastes.

Well, @podcat, you asked for it!

1. Curb AI division spam, by fixing manpower for minors and forcing them to stop building new divisions when they are running large deficits of the required equipment.

2. Code in restrictions which force the AI to stop pulling all the defenders from borders with likely future enemies, e.g. Germany pulling all but a handful of divisions from the Soviet border in order to invade Yugoslavia or some such.

3. Fix war entry for certain majors, especially USA, Italy and Japan, all of whom tend the enter the war too early because of the AI's kneejerk jump to instantly call to arms at the first chance. USA also needs some work to prevent it joining the Allies in early to mid 1940 unless something has seriously gone agley elsewhere in the world.

4. Fix the AI nations' fleet composition, so they don't always run with too few screens and get slaughtered by...well, everything.

5. Stop the massacre of troop transports in the English Channel. Recode the long distance path finding to SR to a distant port that is close to the destination, rather than moving to the closest port to the starting location. E.g. Italian units in Belgium being moved to Libya would jump on transports in Antwerp, move straight to the English Channel, and promptly get sunk; instead they should SR overland to Taranto or somewhere near there, and only then hop on transports for the short jump over to Tobruk or wherever. Hoping this is what @SteelVolt alluded to in the opening message when he spoke of better management of straits.

Cheers, and thanks again for all the work and for keeping us in the loop!

@podcat if y'all can just fix the sub-optimal performance in areas that are not accessible to modders the community can get to work. The lack of a Pacific War, the items listed above, the port strike issues, the invulnerable convoys, the inability of the AI to suppress resistance, the overall AI issues, these the community has no ability to remedy and and are driving a lot of the discontent. The game is designed to allow balance and content to be modded, just please give us a working base system.

The vast majority of players don't use mods.

I would not agree to that statement, and if you aren't you are only playing with a shell of a game. Balance and content issues will be fixed by mods long before PDS releases DLC.

An idea i had for improving the war in Africa would be to make Egypt start as either a puppet or a member of the allies in the 1936 start as this would ensure allied troops would be defending the suez in large numbers which has been a real problem for England. And to any one who objects to this should know this would be historically accurate because GB recognized Egypt's independence in 1922.

It might be literally true but in reality the Egyptians had to ask permission from the English to unzip their fly.

And from a game mechanics standpoint it doesn't work. Just look at how poorly the UK defends the Indian Ocean now that the Raj is an independent state.

Custom Difficulty
First up, despite some sickness we have managed to add a neat feature that I hope is going to help bring more challenge to the game (in combination with the AI improvements). There is now a game setup screen with custom difficulty settings for AI.

Well the Values modified at least promise some more consistency in AI Divison Strength (that or even more 3 Battalion slowing down the end game)

AI
Time to hand the mic over to @SteelVolt to give us an update on AI:

Some of you have voiced concerns over certain aspects of the AI, and we have heard you. In the upcoming patch you can look forward to things like an AI not sending 75% of its army to fight in Africa as well as an AI that is able to efficiently swap out old templates for new ones, both for units in training and units in the field. For that last one it turned out that it was not only incapable of changing light armor to medium, but it only considered a single division every 14 days for upgrade. Needless to say, this was a massive handicap, particularly for larger countries with big armies. At this very moment I am working on making this progression fully scriptable so we can have much better control over how the AI evolves its division templates.

Apart from this there are of course minor tweaks and fixes here and there being done also (like managing straits and choke points better).

Next week I should be able to give you a rough date for release of Sunflower. See you then!

Sorry to sound a bit harsh but I will believe it when I see it. But would be happy if you manage to restore my faith in PDX-AI capabilties.

Agree that you are playing a shell of a game (and to your comments about how mods address somewhat easy to fix issues quicker than PDX fixes them), but if you look at Steam Mods subscriptions compared to say the number of views on that corresponding mod thread, and let's say today's DD which as of this writing has +66K views, it seems that HOI4 has a lot of users and a low percentage of mod users. Granted a view of a DD doesn't imply ownership of the game, I think it certainly proves that PDX doesn't have a business case to prioritize the needs of the mod community over their vanilla game.

Maybe the lack of mod subscription is due to the fact that the game still has so many high level and obvious issues that many people feel that community mods aren't worth the difference at the moment, even though IMO a few currently address many of the issues being addressed by the upcoming PDX patch.

Steam mods are not the only mods and don't give a true representation of use. Many players will also tweak certain things for their own enjoyment. It is quite simple to do with HOI4, mainly requiring that you copy and rename the game, download notepad++, be able to read instructions on wiki, and be semi-computer literate.

A lot of HOI4 modders are waiting for this patch. Not much sense spending time modding around issues that are or should be fixed in this patch. I suspect a lot of mod content will be released after this patch.

I am about to rant. so...

TLDR:

Stop being (I won't type the word I actually wanna use) rude and actually give constructive feedback!

Rant:

Some people really do need to get a reality check and think before they speak (or in this case type).

The vast majority of us are disappointed with the initial release of this game, I agree. The AI is just terrible overall, with the African and non-upgrading Division issues being game-breaking problems we cannot look past. And yes, I also seen people bringing up the Africa issues pre-release, and that could have maybe been nipped in the bud earlier.

I paid the full max price for the top pre-order option (Can't remember the name now, was it Field Marshal Edition?) so I feel like I, like many of us, have a right to voice our concerns.

BUT, some people are just plain rude, behind their keyboards. The devs may not have released the best game but they have acknowledged the main issues we have brought up, and are setting about fixing them as a priority.

You can give CONSTRUCTIVE criticism without having to be plain rude. If I was a Dev and I was being spoken to the way some people are doing so on this post and elsewhere in the forum I would think twice about busting my behind to make the game more enjoyable for you.

The fact is, the game in its current state is bad, yet I still have 80 or so hours played on Steam, because I still manage to have fun with mods etc until patches are released. This game reminds me of TOTAL WAR: Rome II. Remember how unplayable it was when it first came out? A few patches later and the game is great now, in my opinion, and is nothing like the original release. HOI IV will be the same after the issues are resolved, I am sure of it.

People may just think those of us who don't just slate the devs for the sake of slating them are brown nosers, when the fact is that we are all as annoyed as each other, but some of us have more respect for the people who are actually working on the game.

Final point for the devs:

Thanks for the work done so far. Certain aspects of your game are disappointing and a lot of things need balancing (like Naval invasions etc) but if you can:

(A) Fix the Africa issue
(B) Fix the Division upgrading issue and
(C) Generally make the AI more adept at fighting long wars,

...then that will be a good enough patch to make the game playable without mods, I (and probably many others) will be a lot more content with the current game state, and can then wait patiently for further balancing in the future.

Don't be disheartened by trolls and rude people on here.

Sorry for being a little bit OT.
Is Rome TW II ok or it is still a failure? For example I played Rome TW I and the combat system was according to ancient battles: a soldiers can be attacked from some soldiers. For what I have seen Rome TW II is faulty by design as the developers took the latest engine used for modern battles where the combat is 1 to 1. Has this been fixed?

Now back to HOI, usually I never buy games at release as I prefer to read REAL feedbacks (not adverts) about them. I hope that HOI 4 will be fixed and that there are no design/engine issues (i.e. things that CAN'T be fixed).

Regarding Rome (don't wanna talk too much about it on the wrong forum) I personally think it is really enjoyable to play now. The AI combat system might still be a bit naff but if you use of of the overhaul mods (can't remember their names) the game is overall incredibly fun to play.

Regarding HOIIV, it is true that the best option is to wait until a few patches are released, but I was too excited! A bit like when you have one beer left in the fridge and you know you should save it because you are not going shopping for another 3 days, but you drink it anyway, then spend the rest of the week regretting your decision :p

If you guys came to Milwaukee, the little Munich of the U.S, for any kind of convention. I'd buy you a nice weiss. A nice liter mug! Overall though I'm glad you tackled this game even though its not exactly what I wanted on minute of release. You did it, something which is incredibly hard. Especially to build off 3 previous games with a cult of history nerds for fans. I know you guys have done events in LA, but you should try to do stuff in the Mid-West like the Twin Cities, Chicago and Milwaukee. If you can! You have lots of fans in North America. I'd love to see tables at gaming, historical and cultural events. BTW, a nice European import is usually my drink of choice with your games. :p

:)

You didn't reply to question about Rome. Are those mods able to fix a flawed design/engine?

Regarding HOI 4 you bought it and that's perfectly fine. Even though I don't like the design choices of HOI4 @podcat is my favourite programmer at Paradox because of TFH :)
