The eye icon makes another appearance - looks like intel is getting some work.

I still hope Italy, Belgium and Portugal get trees though - or at least the smaller countries.
We see a small part of Italy in the screenshot, reworked Italian focus tree confirmed

I'm not sure if Italy is happening in this expansion or not. In a recent stream Daniel said something about how they know people want Russia and Italy and that they would happen sometime in the future. The way it was worded made it sound like it won't be this expansion. I hope I misinterpreted but there it is.

It wouldn't be strange if next expansion comes before Christmas (like Megacorp and GC last year).

2020 will be a hard year to players, too much games incoming.
Every year I hope for a 2 DLC year, every year I get disappointed, no Sir I am not getting my hopes up.
Maybe if its a small DLC and they are very fast it comes in January but I doubt they will risk messing up the game before Christmas holidays which are quite long.

Why do people always hope for additional Belgium or Portugal trees? I know hope is one thing but iirc apart from TfV there were never more than 4 trees getting added or reworked at once. It's resonable to assume that Italy will be reworked but with the size and scope of the current trees i doubt we get like 6 new and reworked ones a single update.

In a future patch? Sure, but i doubt they'll do more trees than France, 2x mini-France, 2x Spain + Italy in this one.

Well, in WtT, we have China/China communist/Warlords/Manchuria tree added and Japan/German tree reworked.
That's 4 add + 2 rework, 6 total.

You end up with the problem of nations getting "Orphaned" after a while if they aren't redone with nations nearby. Belgium would probably go with France, Netherlands or the UK, however since the latter got reworked last DLC and France is being reworked now, if Belgium doesn't get a tree this cycle it probably won't get one for a while.

Same thing for Portugal - if it doesn't go with an Iberia DLC, odds are it won't come until there is a "leftover European states" rework.

Italy could have a DLC on its own, so there there is much less concern for it being reworked soon. In fact, it probably could go with Bulgaria, Turkey, Greece and maybe a few others as a sort of Mediterranean DLC.

agreed, if they don't do either of these nations in the next DLC, we won't see them for at least another 3 years.

Personally, I think it would be great to see portugal in this DLC, and I'd be fine with Italy coming down the road later, along with, as you said, Bulgaria, Greece, and Turkey. However, I think we are in the minority on that one, and I can kind of understand why. Italy is quite well played, so it does make sense for it to come sooner rather than later, but that does leave the growing problem of there being a number of "orphaned" countries, like you said which now includes Ireland and Belgium.

It also seems unlikely Portugal is coming in this upcoming DLC because every single political branch of both Spanish focuses trees except for the historical route involve conquering Portugal. I had that same hunch when the Netherlands got previewed since so many of its branches also included conquering or annexing Belgium, and it turned out to be the case that we weren't going to get it. I think a betting man would put his money on this same trend playing out again.

Well, the assumption that Italy is getting reworked in this patch is based on their previously stated aim to have 2 base game FTs reworked per DLC, and since the Soviets have been confirmed to not be reworked this time (and also being quite far away from the nations displayed) would leave us with only one suspect, being even more likely for being so close by geographically and culturally.
Of course, they could always change their target to have only one base FT reworked per patch from now on, but we have no evidence of that so far, so even though it's possible, it would seem like a baseless assumption atm.

The real question is on the Portuguese FT.

Portugal could work in an Africa dlc, but belgium really doesn't have anywhere else it could go, so I'd give an edge to belgium. Still, it would be a real shame not to get portugal and spain at the same time.

I'm much more interested in new mechanics than new focus trees personally. This is because focus trees are limited by the current pool of mechanics, so most trees display, in different orders, the few same mechanics.

I used to think the same, but the quality of the NF trees has drastically improved over the past few DLC. The commonwealth NF are pretty awful compared to say the Mexico and Dutch trees.

Well, in WtT, we have China/China communist/Warlords/Manchuria tree added and Japan/German tree reworked.
That's 4 add + 2 rework, 6 total.

Though most of the warlords and the many variants of China share similar parts of their trees and are generally tied together, more than distinct nations like Belgium or Portugal ever could be.

Considering this update is named after the allied invasion of Sicilly i doubt Italy will be left out, i'm 99% sure it will be included in this one. I'm saying whether i want Italy now or later but a unbiased look at the clues we got for now leads me to believe this.

On the other hand Portugal could very well be somehow tied with Brazil or even Belgium itself, considering they both share colonial space in Africa. They could either be tied into an Africa dlc like others had pointed out or if completely left over, tied into a completely unrelated dlc like Mexico was.

In the end sure it's possible that, Portugal maybe less so, but especially Belgium get's orphaned and postponed but there are nations with similar size like Switzerland or Austria in Europe that also got looked over and fit even less in any kind of dlc-category than Belgium. I think certain nations being orphaned, regardless of which one it is, are just a reality and some will always lag behind, like the DoD nations for example with their focus trees in the right size imo when DoD came out, but now in comparison with the new standard for trees, for example the Dutch focus tree or the focus trees for Greece or Poland which will inevitably come at some point, the Hungarian one is a joke.

Well, in WtT, we have China/China communist/Warlords/Manchuria tree added and Japan/German tree reworked.
That's 4 add + 2 rework, 6 total.

Here we already have France, Vichy France, Free France, Nationalist Spain, Republican Spain and I guess Italy is coming also so for this expansion we could easily have 6 like then, more if they decide to represent the Italian civil war.
