Honestly, the most serious threat in MtG isn't sharks - it's bugs. :p

Manpower was always a thing for navies, but it's pretty much the same as air wings, only relevant when you stick very close to that zero mp.
It's 4k for a BB, I think, so the money cost is dwarfed by the industrial cost to the point of irrelevance.

Perhaps it isn't strictly about sharks, but a representation of "dangerous waters" or something.

Right, that’s why I said I bet it has to do more with ship retreat chance, and not manpower. I sometimes write in a stream of conciousness.

USS Indianapolis, almost 600 sailor dead and eaten by sharks. I guess is gonna be a manpower cost on sinking ships
The most tragic part of that story was how when a plane finally found them, several of the sailors reportedly drowned because they got too excited and overexerted themselves trying to signal to the plane by flailing their arms and whatnot.

Japanese submarine slammed two torpedoes into her side, Chief. We was comin’ back from the island of Tinian to Leyte. We’d just delivered the bomb. The Hiroshima bomb. Eleven hundred men went into the water. Vessel went down in 12 minutes.

Didn’t see the first shark for about a half-hour. Tiger. 13-footer. You know how you know that in the water, Chief? You can tell by lookin’ from the dorsal to the tail. What we didn’t know, was that our bomb mission was so secret, no distress signal had been sent. They didn’t even list us overdue for a week. Very first light, Chief, sharks come cruisin’ by, so we formed ourselves into tight groups. It was sorta like you see in the calendars, you know the infantry squares in the old calendars like the Battle of Waterloo and the idea was the shark come to the nearest man, that man he starts poundin’ and hollerin’ and sometimes that shark he go away… but sometimes he wouldn’t go away.

Sometimes that shark looks right at ya. Right into your eyes. And the thing about a shark is he’s got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll’s eyes. When he comes at ya, he doesn’t even seem to be livin’… ’til he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then… ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin’. The ocean turns red, and despite all your poundin’ and your hollerin’ those sharks come in and… they rip you to pieces.

You know by the end of that first dawn, lost a hundred men. I don’t know how many sharks there were, maybe a thousand. I do know how many men, they averaged six an hour. Thursday mornin’, Chief, I bumped into a friend of mine, Herbie Robinson from Cleveland. Baseball player. Bosun’s mate. I thought he was asleep. I reached over to wake him up. He bobbed up, down in the water, he was like a kinda top. Upended. Well, he’d been bitten in half below the waist.

At noon on the fifth day, a Lockheed Ventura swung in low and he spotted us, a young pilot, lot younger than Mr. Hooper here, anyway he spotted us and a few hours later a big ol’ fat PBY come down and started to pick us up. You know that was the time I was most frightened. Waitin’ for my turn. I’ll never put on a lifejacket again. So, eleven hundred men went into the water. 316 men come out, the sharks took the rest, June the 29th, 1945.

Anyway, we delivered the bomb.

Yeah, this probably has to do with the trickle back mechanics they mentioned earlier in regards to air combat.

Sharks killing sailors was a significant factor after many battles in the pacific in which rescue was not immediate. Usually delayed rescue was result of fear of submarines.

I'm getting a serious case of deja vu.

Didn't they already mention that they were adding in sharks and manpower loss for naval losses aaaaages ago, like literally the first thing they teased about the expansion? Everyone in this thread is acting like it's a new thing.

My impression is that tomorrow's DD is going to be more about 'naval terrain' more generally, not so much revolving around sharks, which they already revealed long ago.

My guess would be storm damage to ships and marking of naval manpower losses, maybe, for the shark.

I wonder what other factors may play in. Freezing waters in the far north and south, for example? You can apparently die really quickly in cold water.

Diary late today, perhaps in a little more than an hour.
https://twitter.com/podcat_paradox/status/1050020940439085056?s=19

Is that... A weather map mode?
Now that is really interesting. I agree the water colouring is probably naval terrain (coastal waters, open ocean, and so on), but I don't understand the land provinces. Weather would make sense, I suppose.

I always thought that aces should be expanded to more areas of military command. Like, I don't really want to model every division commander in an army of 400 divisions, but having five or six exceptional commanders in that number would be OK.
Agree. Give me some "ace division commanders" I can transfer to my elite breakthrough/assault divisions. They could give bonuses to their own divisions and perhaps also to other divisions in the same province.

Wow, I saw that clip and was sure it was from some hardcore classic WWII movie, and then I go to YouTube and I see it's from freaking Jaws o_O .
