I think what we just read in the AAR will be the way carrier battles are handled which is completely unrealistic. I hope Paradox reads this and at least puts in a special mechanic for carrier battles for the next DLC, because I doubt it will make it into this one.

Carriers are the most important, and king of the seas, yet Paradox thinks that carrier warfare consisted of closing to gun range of the opposing carrier fleets, then sending all their ships at each other, and only then decide to launch their airplanes at the enemy fleet.
I find this very concerning.

Is there not a method in MTG to send Carrier Air towards enemy fleet to attack independent of a pure surface battle BEFORE two surface fleets close to begin surface battle?

Can a Dev please confirm ? @podcat

To repeat: can naval combat occur between carriers vs. carriers before both fleets close to begin a surface battle?

If one side has a Carrier it should be: Enemy fleet is spotted by naval air/surface patrol. Carriers send planes to attack. Carriers sink/damage enemy vessels. Then the surface fleets can engage if they want to or disengage.

I really don't believe they can do this. They are just carrying on how combat was essentially from how it was before, but it's now just a temporarily spot, and not the entire sea zone. The DD was about achievements and hinting that a release date is coming soon.

That's it. So, we are stuck with basically the same way as combat as before when it comes to how surface fleets engage.

I get that you could just unleash your planes into the entire seazone from your carriers but that's not really much difference than naval bomber attacks, just shorter in range.

A carrier strike could be absolutely devastating to ships. If organized right, as a concentrated attack that with good pilot skill, smaller airplanes (than land based naval bombers), and the simultaneous high dive bomb attack and low torpedo attack made it extremely difficult to out maneuver/intercept/shoot with AA guns.
I feel like maybe most air attacks on a naval fleet should at least have the potential to be an organized, concentrated attack. With degree of organization and effectiveness depending on air and naval doctrines and air wing experience. The attrition model works for land engagement where there are lots of small targets and divisions spread everywhere. Attrition is also a decent model for air attacks on fairly abstracted convoys.

When attacking a fleet on the map though, I feel like the game should gather air resources in that region and do a more coordinated, concentrated attack. Basically the AI code controlling aircraft in a naval zone should size up the strength of the detected fleet and estimate the size of force needed to succeed, try to marshal those forces from the air wings assigned to the sea zone and then throw them into a more detailed "strike" simulation. This would also go for port strikes.

It's possible they have considered this with MtG, but found that adding an entire new mechanic on something that in their mind sort of worked before is not worth the effort. They seemed to have really only added spotting, a limited area of engagement instead of the entire sea zone, and new submarine engagement mechanics when it comes to this mod.

I don't disagree with those changes, and submarines really needed some new mechanic that works better to simulate submarine warfare, but they left out the number one and most important way to fight naval battles - carrier warfare. Which needs it's own mechanic, and yes I do agree that port strikes also should get a type of mechanic that better simulates a portstrike than the old way.

Pretty cool, but naval battles are still so irrelevant in the grander scheme for most nations

I'm guessing that when your patrol reaches 100% in Spotting an enemy you either have the option of engaging with a fleet, sending naval-air to attack or both. If this is the case, Carrier battles can occur before any purely surface battle takes place. Based on what we've seen in the dev diaries, this seems logical.

At this point it should be clear that this expansion is not coming until the summer at EARLIEST. It probably will not be great either.

I am concerned because I have not yet heard of AI changes to prevent stockpiling planes and ships far beyond what they could sustain with fuel. Some method of scraping or selling obsolete planes and ships might help. Gifting planes and convoys also appears to be underutilized by the AI. An ability to gift war ships and an incentive for the AI to use it might also help. I am afraid we might see large AI air forces and navies sitting idle and useless.

I would also like to mention that if movement of convoys and war ships along suicidally risky sea routes has not been finally fixed with the update accompanying this naval DLC I will be very disappointed. This flaw can potentially contribute to massive numbers of troop and resources losses that have a large impact on the outcome of wars.
