I think the confusion stems from you thinking there's a difference between "upgrade older versions to newer ones" and "upgrade planes to most recent version".

What this DD is about is the ability to convert one model to another model, not to a newer version of the same model. The first is "conversion", what you guys are talking about is "upgrade", which for air units is automatic and mandatory.
So, you agree that you are talking about something else? Because that was my point.

There is a difference between "upgrade aircraft sitting in my stockpile to make them newer aircraft" and "replace old aircraft in my deployed wings with newer aircraft as they become available, sending the old ones back to the stockpile".

The latter is what automatically happens in game at the moment, the former doesn't - but is what most people are asking about in relation to this new functionality. Whereas you're talking (slightly obsessively...) about the latter. ;)

About upgrading ships.
I liked the way HOI1 did this. You researched new armor, guns, AA, radar (IIRC). Then you could click on individual ships and decide what to upgrade. That send the ship of map for a designated time, reappearing with improved stats later.
Ships are expensive units with a lot of national pride attached to them. They where extensively upgraded during this period.
It would be great if this was added in a future expansion with a marine theme. Flavor and more to do in the early years.

I disagree. If you follow the post history you'll see that I asked about the first one. It was someone else that -mistakenly- brought up the latter, I merely responded and corrected those who kept bringing up upgrades.

You too are doing the same mistake by the way. You are saying "upgrade aircraft sitting in my stockpile to make them newer aircraft". This is clearly what unit conversion doesn't do. I say clearly because Podcat made it clear that it won't be possible to upgrade obsolete units to newer versions. That's just regular old upgrade. What this is about is converting models (either obsolete or new) to different models. Tanks to tank destroyers, fighters to CAS. Not older tanks to newer tanks. I don't know how much clearer I can make it.

You guys are the ones that obssessively keep talking about upgrades.
Anyway let's move on. I have my answer courtesy of Axe99.

what you guys are talking about is "upgrade", which for air units is automatic and mandatory.

I'm not sure I understand fully this bit.
As of current version of the game, planes in your stockpile won't upgrade, if I have Bf109-A in my stockpile and i'm producing Bf109-B, the Bf109-A won't be transformed into Bf109-B.
My wings however will be equiped with the best variant (which I agree is automatic and mandatory): my Bf109-As will be replaced by Bf109-Bs and the Bf109-As will return to the stockpile. This is not an upgrade, it's a replacement.

Or I am completely hallucinating ?

When you upgrade your computer, do you use multiple CPUs, GPUs etc?
Or do you toss the old one and put the new one in?

What you have in stockpile is irrelevant, when it has no effect on what you have in the field. Am I wrong? What's worse it still doesn't address the fact that conversion is NOT giving the old one and getting a new one. It's giving one type and getting another.

I am getting seriously frustrated with some people's inability to understand such a simple concept.

This is becoming a discussion solely about semantics, which is worthless. Call it a replacement, call it an upgrade I honestly don't give a flying f***. I am approaching the limits of my courtesy already, so I'll excuse myself from further participating in this thread.

Let's move on... please.

Well, one thing, despite what you think semantics are, the conversion mechanic covers both. You can convert Mk 1 to Mk 2 of vehicles, whether you want to call it upgrade or a flying saucer being irrelevant, it's covered there as well as converting Tank tier 1 to TD Tier 1 (And then TD tier 1 to TD tier 2).

As for planes converting to different type of plane altogether, we're all still waiting on the answer, I believe.

It will be easy to mod as Podcat showed. So we will probably be able to have it one way or another.

Interesting.

@podcat is equipment conversion part of "Death or Dishonor", or part of the free "Oak" update ?

In my aircraft mod, I had some events, that would change some aircraft into different types of aircraft, fighters to fighter-bombers, some other things as well, like some fighters into carrier fighters. It was a bit clunky, in that it required things to be different archetypes, but worked quite well.

Certainly, this equipment conversion thing would make it a lot simpler to implement things. I had an idea for turning obsolete strategic bombers into long range maritime patrol aircraft, and that should be easier to do with this equipment conversion, than the way I've had to do things in the past.

As to the upgrade mechanic for aircraft, it would be nice for some heavy fighters and tactical bombers to be able to change from one to the other as was done with the Blendheim/Beauforts and the Do-17s. Or maybe for Heavy/Light Fighters to CAS (and vice versa).

Make Naval Combat Great.

I agree. That's also what BjornB wrote in the announcement of DoD. At the end of his posts the features of Oak and DoD are listed. There he explicitly wrote that the revamp of the air gameplay and the improved map design are part of Oak. The rest (including the equipment conversation) is part of DoD.

Boo. I can't afford more games for a little while.

I get to play the base game for a while longer. Guess I'll volunteer to be a base game play tester!

I do hope you guys include upgrades for ships, as time goes on. Perhaps instead of 'upgrading' them to the next level, allow them to gain levels in their various point-buy upgrades like if they were a variant, to allow them to remain as their "original" class but an upgraded version of it to represent new engines on an older hull?

It was very (very) unusual to mount new engines on an older hull (and almost unheard of without a rebuild that takes nearly as long as building a new ship from scratch). The main examples of propulsion changes I can think of, off the top of my head, are removing boilers and increasing fuel capacity for older destroyers for escort duty (so slower, but longer ranged). Apologies if I've missed anything there, and by all means call me out if I have.

Applying that idea to AA would work well though :).

It was quite common for restricted countries then. Like Kongo from Japan, Andrea Doria from Italy and even HMS Warspite from England.
And yes it will take a very long time like 3 years for Kongo and Warspite.
If this kind of "surgery" is available in game, plz make Shinano(BB->CV) also available ingame.
:)

Kind of common thing. If the hull allows this, you could rearm the ship with bigger main caliber, replace engines (expensive, of course, but still better than to build ship from zero), rebuild the citadel, add radars, upgrade fire control systems, add better AA systems. Only time and available resources matter.
Italy has fully rebuild it's WW1 dreadnoughts into not so bad BB's for late 1930-s.
