When will you Developers tackle the USSR, right now their lack of 'content' and boring focus tree is what's keeping me from playing the game and buying any more DLC's (I got the Field Marshal edition).

I understand that they must be a 'developer nightmare' when looking at game balance but they where arguably the second most important country in the war after Germany and still have been overlooked for several nations that where insignificant in the bigger picture.
They almost certainly are going to be next, while I would argue that Italian's portrayal on historical mode is worse, I do acknowledge how important they were compared to Italy and that they should be tackled next. The major backlash they got when they said the USSR was left out of 1.9 'Husky", man I still hate that name for the patch, and La Resistance basically guaranteed that the Soviets are next. It also gives Paradox an excuse to buff Sweden.

.... OK? When you sign up for a country that didn't do much historically until 1941 that's what you get though.... I'm not trying to say I don't want to see Soviet armoured divisions in Spain, my problem is it's not lend-lease equipment when I'm playing someone else. I would be completely fine with the Soviets getting some options for how to handle the Spanish Civil War, such as ignoring it, sending equipment and sending men. It shouldn't be default to see minimum 7 fully equipped armoured divisions from the Soviet Union, sometimes more if Republican Spain takes "Expand Soviet Aid" since it allows the Soviets to send more volunteers, when playing on historical mode. Should the US be able to jump in and ignore history when playing historical too because it's boring?

I agree they are too weak and the anarchists revolution is blown out of proportion and causes a massive collapse of the Republican lines. I said earlier in this thread, I think when the anarchists spawn, when playing historical, should be limited to the state of Catalonia and have just enough divisions to cover their entire front line with maybe an extra 1-4 to help them out. I don't play in Spain often so I don't know if they do or not, but if they do the anarchists need to stop taking divisions from, apart from maybe the anarchist ones, it causes too many gaps in the Republican line in a second and makes them just fall apart.

I don't in fact lately I've been not sending aid to Spain as Germany or Italy because right now they don't need me and no I didn't have trouble before. Look above, I have no problem with Soviet divisions in Spain when NOT playing historical.
I don't agree that you should get boring if you choose to play USA or Soviets.

I'm ok with paying a price for sending volunteers to the SCW as USA or Soviets. The Americans already have a huge price to pay because the limited intervention path is much worse then the neutrality one. And I think the Soviets should get a penalty in relations with the west or something for sending land troops. But I'd pay this price because volunteers give me something to do in the early years. Otherwise it is just too boring to play Soviets or USA and the game would lose a lot of replay value.

Is the Soviet Union not sending volunteers to Republican Spain by design or a bug? There seems to be some conflict between the part of the AI code motivating the Soviets to support the Republicans and the part of the code that is discouraging them from sending volunteers to Western Europe.
It's a bug because of the new Spanish tags. It depends what focus the ai chooses.

Why do you need to not have Gibraltar as the Spanish Empire in order to take the focus to invade Portugal?

I don't agree that you should get boring if you choose to play USA or Soviets.
If a player is in control of a country that didn't get involved in the war until later then they should have the option to follow the historical path or have a interventionist path, but that second option should come at a cost. For the Soviets I would make the Stalin path sit the Spanish Civil War out and the Trotsky path have them intervene in the war. If you don't want to sit around and wait, then don't pick the country, why not just have WW2 start in 1936 then...

The game doesn't lose replay value if a couple countries don't have something to do in a historical game, people just choose a different country.... Want to get involved early? Pick a diffferent political path, if you can. I don't get why you're telling me about how boring it would be as a Soviet player to not get involved in the SCW, when I was talking about how the historical Soviet AI shouldn't be in Spain, unless you're telling me you're an AI, this doesn't apply to you. I said I'm for the option of getting involved, when and where it works. Stalin should not be getting involved in the SCW besides sending equipment and probably an attache. Neutral USA shouldn't be going into the SCW at all. Trotsky on the other hand, wouldn't care about the British embargo on Spain and would send troops and help out as best he could and integrate them after the SCW, well, if they let him.

@Bandua_of_Gallaecia I think we may be arguing slightly different points: I fully agree that Catalonia has a distinct cultural identity separate from the main stream Spanish identity.

I was simply arguing that de facto independence from the Kingdom of France, as never really challenged by the French crown, amounted to de jure independence given the length of the independence. They were independent longer than some modern European nations have existed.
I see your point, and i agree.
I was not disputing the legitimacy of the county of Barcelona's independence, i was merely using Catalonia as an example of how its not the lenght or recentness of a past independence that legitimises the existence of a releaseable Tag.
I made the case that they were never de jure independent only to further emphasize my point, but even if de facto is all that matters, the point stands since it was still a long time ago and for a relatively brief period.

Also, if you don't mind, you could try using Castillian as the term to refer to "mainstream Spanish" culture.

The five year plan
As I said last time we did this, its not actually a five year plan, but I want to share with you some form of roadmap on what to expect in the future as well as follow up what we have been up to. The list below has been posted before and added to, and stuff that is crossed off we now consider handled (although we might of course return to some items again).

Just to be super clear, this is not any form of exhaustive or final list and unless we have already done it we can't promise anythings. Priorities change etc. The point of this is to give you an idea of things we would like to do. The order of things is also not in any kind of priority order, or order we would do them.

  • Improve flavor and immersion with naming of things in the game. No more Infantry Division Type 1 etc.
  • A Chain of Command system allowing field marshals to command generals
  • Every starting nation has a custom portrait for historical leaders
  • A way for players to take dynamic decisions, quickly. Something that fits between events and national focuses.
  • Changing National Unity to something that matters during most of the game rather than when you are losing only
  • Rework how wars work with respect to merging etc as its a big source of problems
  • Add the ability to clean up your equipment stockpile from old stuff
  • Allow greater access to resources through improving infrastructure
  • More player control over naval warfare and fleet battle behaviour
  • Improved naval combat
  • Improve balance, feedback and mechanics for submarine warfare
  • Properly represent fuel in some way in the game
  • More player control over rules. HOI is played in many different ways and say competitive MP and single player rulesets often clash
  • A more robust and expansive mapmode system. Having a player mapmode in MP would be helpful etc
  • Spies and espionage
  • An occupation system that isnt tied only to wars and where core vs non-core isn't so binary for access to things.
  • Improvements to frontline stability
  • A logistics system with more actual player involvement (now you only care once stuff has gone very badly)
  • Long term goals and strategies to guide ai rather than random vs historical focus lists, visible to players
  • Improving peace conferences
  • Update core national focus trees with alt-history paths and more options (Germany, Italy, USA, United Kingdom, Soviet, France, Japan, Poland)
  • Wunderwaffen projects
  • More differences between sub-ideologies and government forms
  • More National Focus trees. (Among most interesting: China, South America, Scandinavia, Spain, Turkey, Iran, Greece)
  • Make defensive warfare more fun
  • Adding mechanics to limit the size of your standing army, particularly post-war etc
  • Have doctrines more strongly affect division designing to get away from cookie cutter solutions and too ahistorical gamey setups
  • More usage of drag and drop and QoL like this. For example controlling template lists.
  • Rebalance ministers and ideas to give more interesting choices.
  • Improve weather mechanics
  • Strategic and tactical AI improvements
(bold ones were added this update. Striked out ones are done)

You'll notice that some of these are small and some of them are huge. I can't really talk too much details about this stuff though. That is stuff we will do once/if it makes it to dev diaries with feature highlights and has been implemented.

Now is also a good time to get your friends into HOI4 as Daniel is doing a learn to play stream (part 2) at 14:00 CET here.

See you all next week!
Great. When?

Do you have any plans to make research more interesting? It's such an integral part of the game but it still feels like a filler.
Personally I think conscription laws should effect the research speed of nations. For example, the Germans had a massive number of their physicists die on the eastern front during WW2 because they got conscripted. I'm sure many other industries were effected as well.

So scraping the barrell should give you a 50 percent malus to research speed or something like that.

@Bandua_of_Gallaecia Ah, I would say there is an even better example than: Ireland. Ireland had never existed as a unified nation-state prior to 1922, yet it existed as a concept and ideal, and by 1936 was a de facto independent nation. A tag that proves your point in RL as well as in game!

In the wunderwaffen side of things it would be cool to be able to have carrier-based jet planes at last. It happend in the 50´s, so pushing the envelope a bit could be an option.

In fact, it should be nice to be able to update rotary-powered wings into jets (with perhaps an xp penalty) instead of having to scrap the wing entirely. Late game feels a bit left out and in fact, it would also be nice if Paradox revisited HoI2 and pushed HoI4 to 1953 to cover extras such as the Korean War.

Along with jets, helicopters could show up, perhaps not in the form of brigades, but as a modifier for scouts, field hospitals and so on.

Carrier Jet Fighters would be nice, the rest I'd say wait until some type of Korean War/Early Cold War expansion once WW2 is done.

Carrier Jet Fighters would be nice, the rest I'd say wait until some type of Korean War/Early Cold War expansion once WW2 is done.
1953 is the date I suggested because it was the year Stalin died. With the ceasefire on Korea we can trully say the Cold War started, so a game that represents that should have different mechanics from HoI4.
Helicopters existed during WWII, but they were quite small and its use was very, very testimonial (the US used them over Burma), hence the wunderwaffen option.

On the other hand, pushing a bit further than the current endgame means you can also play other conflicts such as Israel´s war of 48, the rise of the Viet Minh against France and so on.

And well, the first jet landing on a carrier happened with a de Havilland Vampire by the end of 45, so pushing the tech a bit is not that out of context.

Korean War was in the Cold War, I want the game to go into Early Cold War, I don't think it should go farther then 1956, that would be 20 years in game. I was just saying to wait for the expansion that we might not even get, just because WW2 isn't even represented historically right now.

To be honest, I´m simply interested on the features themselves as they transfer to Kaiserreich, so more years is just more years. :D

Ah fair enough, I'm not a fan of Kaiserreich, tried it a couple times but meh? I'm not opposed to chaos but there's only so many civil wars or communist/socialist uprisings I can take before it becomes boring. Also it has America doing a civil war and became so popular it transferred over to vanilla HoI IV America and I can never forgive them for it.

Still, more fleshed out late game mechanics are a good thing by themselves, no matter what historic or a-historic timeline you like.

Oh, another simple, yet nice, addition; airborne artillery for paratroopers. It should be possible to add artillery, albeit at half strenght, outside support in the general division configurator.

Oh I wasn't saying I had issues with the gameplay, just the storyline I think is meh, gameplay looks the same in some areas while better in others
