Doubt I'll be back near this until this is fixed. Should release any sort of fix for it as a beta and if it fucks other stuff up it'd probably still be better than the way this leaves things atm.
yeah, yesterday I fought like half the US Army in the Soviet union...

I have tried the 6.0 MB patch 1.0.1_beta, game1.0.1 (e05F), using exactly the same testing steps as I did in the thread where I reported the overheating card, i.e.:
- Start with all options maximised
- Open HOI4 in SinglePlayer, Tutorial, and let the game in pause mode on the 1st tutorial screen 1/15
- alt-tab then record temperatures every minute

I set out below the compared results, on a 10mn test, done 2 days ago and this morning (before/after patch).

I use an old laptop, Alienware M17x-R2 (proto for African markets), Intel i7 X 920 @ 2.00GHz (8 CPUs), RAM 8192MB, Crossfire 2xAMD Mobility Radeon HD 5800, latest and final driver released by AMD (Non-WHQL-64Bit-NIEG-Radeon-Crimson-16.2.1-Win10-Win8.1-Win7-Feb27), running on a Zalman cooler. Internal exhausts, fans and video cards cleaned up 5 months ago before going to work in Conakry - where it never overheat (HOI3, CK2 and Total War...)
Display is always set at 60Hertz (Vsync on - vsync off changed nothing concerning temps), and 3DSTATS has always been between 35 and 45 fps, mostly 38, (before and after patch) .

1- Even if I have a low fps (38), and a constant 60 hertz, it seems that globally this patch has reduced the temperature by roughly 5c
2- I found odd to see even my CPUs and 2 video card (unused Crossfire GPU) having their temp reduced. I guess it is a side effect of the very very packed components inside what was once an overcharged (and very heavy) laptop. GPU1 spread less calories in the whole system

Not sure what you did in this patch as I was not in your range of high fps/high end video cards, but there is a slightly improvement. Numbers collected in the exact same environment/procedure don't lie.
Not perfect though (don't forget: I am only idle on 1st tutorial screen, and game fully paused, hence can't play without feeling uncomfortable with my poor old companion (I went over 100c within 2 minutes unpaused and full speed), but there are hopes...

Thats a big, scary change that will need a lot of long term testing. It was done for a reason a couple of months back and I am not sure if we have solved everything needed to remove it. We'll be checking it out over time though.

Any information you can release on what specifically the change was done for? Because currently the automatic military access causes a ton of trouble with AI collapsing its fronts, sending its entire army halfway across the world, exploits with war declarations etc. etc. It just doesn't seem like it's worth the reason unless it fixes some other significant problem you guys haven't worked on yet.

is this old CTDs? then yeah assumign the savegames are not corrupt.


Any information you can release on what specifically the change was done for? Because currently the automatic military access causes a ton of trouble with AI collapsing its fronts, sending its entire army halfway across the world, exploits with war declarations etc. etc. It just doesn't seem like it's worth the reason unless it fixes some other significant problem you guys haven't worked on yet.

The initial case was this:
1. Germany occupies poland
2. Germany is at war with soviets and allies. Poalnd is in allies in exile
3. soviets roll into occupied poland. it gets auto liberated
4. battleplans now break, and units cant keep pushing into germany because you dont have military access to poland.

now since then soviet is allowed to occupy other faction members as they get liberated, so that problem is likely gone, but there were other variations of this. A solution would be to do mil. access a faction wide thing so say 2 democratic factions can liberate each others friends.

basically the same problem existed in HOI3 where soviet attack would collapse because poland was liberated/puppeted

Thanks podcat, yes this is before the beta patch. I got round to reporting it last night before playing till 3am on a school night (working next day). The game is really really good thank you.

Thank you for explaining this. Now I'm starting to see some logic to this system. :)

The main gripe people are having with this is that the system causes silly things to happen like Germany invading India via the Himalayas and leaving their own borders open to invasion, even when the Soviets are preparing to declare war on them. If removing this feature could potentially be a show-stopper, then is it possible to only enable this feature selectively to allow movement through states that were recently liberated? Or perhaps recently liberated countries automatically grant access to whoever was retaking their states from an enemy?

I updated the 1.0.1_beta now with a fix for the CTD introduced with this beta hotfix. Looks fine in tests so far so might get to be full patch today. Let me know if it solved your problems if you were one of the ppl experiencing these CTDs.

#FPS limiter: a default value of 75 is complete overkill. Since most customers won't even know what to do with this setting, they'll continue to have technical issues and keep complaining.
A great example of how magical FPS limiting is would be Paradox' own "Cities Skylines". Before using the 30fps limiter mod my computer went ape, with that mod the game runs smoothly and the CPU is silent. I didn't notice any downside. Another example "Warhammer: Total War", been using the RTSS tool to limit the fps to 30. In HoI4 I'm also using 30 fps which helps a bit. I'd assume that everything above 60fps is completely unnecessary and only tortures the hardware.
You might want to give the casual players some assistance in the options what the fps limiter does and that they should lower it to certain values if they have problems.

#late game lag
Well, having ~6 times as many units on the map as in pre-HoI3 titles not only clutters the interface but is also a resource hog. Imagine not being able to merge divs into armies of up to 12 divs and what effect that would have had on HoI2's performance. I fail to see how improving the engine is the proper approach. When playing the Soviet Union you'll have ~600 units on the map. That's complete overkill in terms of tactical depth. Having them merged into corps and armies like it used to be before HoI3 and 4, would drastically lower the calculation load and improve the overview.

There are so many great things about this game, but I just can't get my head round not having OOBs, message settings or a ledger. It just feels like such a mess, and so much information is either missing or hidden away somewhere I've yet to find it.

Were these concerns not raised by the beta testers? Were there no discussions about this? :(

But why would poland be auto-liberated instead of occupied by Soviets?

Souldn`t auto liberation only be a thing if a country liberating is an ally and has military access already?

The initial case was this:
1. Germany occupies poland
2. Germany is at war with soviets and allies. Poalnd is in allies in exile
3. soviets roll into occupied poland. it gets auto liberated
4. battleplans now break, and units cant keep pushing into germany because you dont have military access to poland.

now since then soviet is allowed to occupy other faction members as they get liberated, so that problem is likely gone, but there were other variations of this. A solution would be to do mil. access a faction wide thing so say 2 democratic factions can liberate each others friends.

basically the same problem existed in HOI3 where soviet attack would collapse because poland was liberated/puppeted

Shouldn't "liberated" countries automatically join the faction that freed them and be forced to leave the other?

A France, that would be liberated by the Soviets would have likely become a communist puppet of the Soviet Union and not a democratic member of the allies. Of course that might lead to awkward moments as well but those should only come up very rarely. The current situation comes up in almost every game though. In my game I now have British and US troops holding the rests of China against my ally Japan, even though China isn't in the Allies and they aren't even in the same war and shouldn't support China like that, IMHO.
