It seems to me that there are lots of threads saying what we do want in HOI3, but not any threads pointing out what should be avoided. So I'll start by pointing out two aspects of HOI2 that I don't want repeated in HOI3.

1) Having to constantly carry out the same action. This occurs most obviously in HOI2 in sending spies and carrying out espionage/ counterespionage etc. Having to clear out the spies from your country at the beginning of the game is really boring. If you set a monthly budget for these activities instead you can then concentrate on other matters.

2) Pop-up boxes - especially if for a trivial reason or when not triggered by the player. If the player is in the middle of carrying out some actions he does not want to be disturbed by having to handle whatever the pop-up box is making him do.

Paradox must get in the way of believing that every time a pop-up box is employed, a really cute puppy dog is killed. At the moment a major event signals the massacre of lots and lots of cute puppy dogs. It may be that occasionally a pop-up box must be used, but this must be fully justified just as putting down a puppy would have to be.

One way to handle events instead of via pop-up boxes this would be for the computer to automatically change the time settings when a major event takes place and signal an event with visual or audio means. The player could still carry out his current actions before deciding on the event. Also a player could have a screen containing a list of actions pending which he could process all at once. Just AVOID POP-UP BOXES if at all possible.

Anyway I'm sure there are more things that HOI3 should avoid. Just list them here.

Maybe it's just been too long since I've played, but what the heck are you talking about in reference to pop up boxes. You realize you can change the settings of much of what pops up on screen and pauses the game?

I'll second the spy bit, I'd like to set an operation, and not have to think about it until it's complete or I've told it to give me a pop up or stop it.

I quite like the pop up boxes, looking at the same screen for 3 years can be a bit boring and they break it up. Spies do suck, you should just be able to set a budget for espionage and which countries to focus on.

A problem with pop-up boxes (at least in EU3, which HoI3 will share the engine with) is that sometimes you want to click and chose some action from one - or just click on some province - but a(nother) pop-up box appears with a different choice in that place and you chose some action you might not even have seen, much less want to.

In short: Pop-up boxes should have a small pause (about 0.5 to 1 second) between when they appear and when their choices become actually selectable.

yes make a window for budget funds where we can choose on what we want to spend it
like kill all spies or on diplomatic agreements or decreasing dissent or so

in inteligence menu we could have ability to decide wich country to what level should be espionaged and what missions in that country should do like a list you do now this then do that after that you come back to that or do that

Well, the popup boxes should be of different kinds. If 5 tanks are finished at the same time, only one popupbox for all of them, please?

I hate getting 50 popupboxes when you finished 50 V2 rockets... But I like to get one :)

Those "standard" black boxes for new units been built is ok, those can be ignored. But those yellow one that for instanse Core use for delivering out ships that is been built, those are annoying. Those can't be ignored. Game pauses. The yellow boxes is usualy used for bigger events but the game mechanism is so that some mods have to use them to deliver untis.

Make the game more mod frendly for the mod'ers to deliver the player untis like a battle ships or those subs that is intended for the player.

No 3D!!!!!!!!!!

I hate the fact that valuable system resources are being wasted in EU3 because all the sprites are 3D.

The map should be 2D and all the sprite too should be 2D.

Not only the game runs faster.... It also LOOKS nicer to my eyes.

The only way I might accept a 3D map.... is to represent the fact that the world is spheare not a cylinder.

3D units in a cylidrical world is a very very bad thing.

Now about provice landscape..... Perhaps that should apear on some map...
Along with weather.

I especially liked the work done in Medieval II...... the mountains where nicely designed.... and you could see the snow on them in winter time.....

EU3 map is something to be avoided in my humble opinion.....

The fact that everyone has a powerful 3D graphics card is not a valid excuse to make a grand strategy game 3D.

Better invent someway to use the graphics card computing power to calculate something complicated.... such as naval or air combat outcome.

I agree with 1) , cause espionage is one of the most intresing and in the same time boring parts of the game. I dont like the weekly mircromanagment, but it will be great if you can use it as integral part of your strategy.

The 'yellow ones' are events. In the EU3 engine, they don't prevent you from doing things while they're on screen like they do in HOI2.

They do, however, pop up in front of the events you're currently dealing with instead of waiting patiently in the background until you decided on whatever event you have in front of you.

What we dont want:

1- The game not to be an all out war one. Especially if Paradox plans to release expansion packs covering the Cold War era too.

2- Not too difficult moddability to let modders create modern day scenarios too.

3- No incorrect maps representing random shapes of provinces and not the correct shapes of provinces as they look like now. Also no incorrect global map and non access to the Russian arctic ocean. :)

"I hate the fact that valuable system resources are being wasted in EU3 because all the sprites are 3D."

Eh? Having the map/sprites in 2d puts MORE strain on the CPU. Having them in 3d shifts workload over to the GPU leaving the CPU more free to calculate AI etc which means the game runs faster etc. Hopefully the shift to 3d will make it possible for people to play past 1943. At current in HOI2 (all 2d) the game is close to unplayable beyond that date because of how slow it runs. EU3 on the other hand *always* run fast for me.

WHat I don't want? A cold war expansion. There nothing that could be changed in HOI3 to make it suitable in any way to play the cold war.

I would however be happy with a 1910 expansion though :p

Still hard, but the HOI could still sort of handle WWI, oh well, I can hope :p

1903-1933 should be its own game. Sort of like Diplomacy, but with better politics and warfare. And fun.

I can't remember whether this was added in a patch or in an expansion of EU3, but the events don't let you click for a short period of time when they appear. ;)

You do know you can set message settings so only the things you want will show up in a popup box, right?

I'm sorry, but you're going to have to accept the face that 2D in computer gaming doesn't sell anymore. Plus it's actually easier on the system resources, as MrLatency pointed out.

What I don't want? I don't want a deterministic, exactly the same, World War 2 every single time. It gets boring after 2-3 games.
