It seems to me that there are lots of threads saying what we do want in HOI3, but not any threads pointing out what should be avoided. So I'll start by pointing out two aspects of HOI2 that I don't want repeated in HOI3.
1) Having to constantly carry out the same action. This occurs most obviously in HOI2 in sending spies and carrying out espionage/ counterespionage etc. Having to clear out the spies from your country at the beginning of the game is really boring. If you set a monthly budget for these activities instead you can then concentrate on other matters.
2) Pop-up boxes - especially if for a trivial reason or when not triggered by the player. If the player is in the middle of carrying out some actions he does not want to be disturbed by having to handle whatever the pop-up box is making him do.
Paradox must get in the way of believing that every time a pop-up box is employed, a really cute puppy dog is killed. At the moment a major event signals the massacre of lots and lots of cute puppy dogs. It may be that occasionally a pop-up box must be used, but this must be fully justified just as putting down a puppy would have to be.
One way to handle events instead of via pop-up boxes this would be for the computer to automatically change the time settings when a major event takes place and signal an event with visual or audio means. The player could still carry out his current actions before deciding on the event. Also a player could have a screen containing a list of actions pending which he could process all at once. Just AVOID POP-UP BOXES if at all possible.
Anyway I'm sure there are more things that HOI3 should avoid. Just list them here.
