This was a real question that I had and was not 'trying to stir things' up. The things I did not like about HoI2 was the amount of micromanagement and the way the research worked. Those were my main two issues. Both of these work much better imho in HoI3 than 2.

Sorry about that, numdydar. I shouldn't have doubted your sincerity. :)

If you didn't like HoI2, i don't think you will enjoy AoD. I would give you the same answer, even if you didn't like HoI3.

AoD is basically an "improved" version of HoI2-Doosday-Armageddon.

I'm a little confused by AOD.

Is it an expansion to HOI2?

Is it closer to HOI3?

An alternative to HOI3?

Does it use the smaller provinces like HOI3?

The game looks interesting. I own both HOI2 and HOI3...but why should I buy this game?

I'm really confused by seeing AOD.

I am someone that really did not like HoI2 (even with all the expansions). I also happen to really like HoI3 as it is currently (1.3). I have been reading about how great AoD is supposted to be. I have looked around and read about AoD, but I just cannot seem to understand why a lot of people think this it will be so great.

So I was hoping someone here would be able to explain (in simple terms lol) why I should be willing to buy AoD when I did not like HoI2 that much anyway?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

You like HOI3 more than HOI2 well thats strange cause all of the HOI fans I know hate that game.Althought there are many good options at HOI3 like army groups 3d etc that game always runs slow and tons of control problems also I hate to conquer thousands of provinces HOI2 had enough...

Any way to sum up HOI3 cant be compared with HOI2 and we know that AOD is better than HOI2 so that means only one thing...

AOD WILL BE MUCH BETTER THAN HOI3...

Only problem is 2d-3d thing but I dont really care about it I want a game which I can play on my computer and if a pc can run Crysis at veryhigh cant run a game called HOI3 that was that games problem a teribble one.

A really suggest you to dont compare any game with HOI3 disaster...

Also think AOD with Arma mods like coldwar or skin packs that will be great !!!

I'm a little confused by AOD.

I would suggest reading the dev' diaries on this board

Is it an expansion to HOI2?

Yes and no; it is a standalone game that does not require HoI2 but it is based on the licenced Paradox HoI2 game engine and mechanics so you can see it as an expansion but with a much greater level of detail and work having gone into making it a complete game.

Is it closer to HOI3?

No, closer to HoI2

An alternative to HOI3?

No, as Balesir has said, it's more complimentary

Does it use the smaller provinces like HOI3?

No, it uses the standard PI HoI2 map; although the province limit has been removed so modders may add new provinces and create a new map

The game looks interesting. I own both HOI2 and HOI3...but why should I buy this game?

I'm really confused by seeing AOD.

Can't answer this rheotrical question except to say that I'm going to buy it and do read the diaries on the board.

I'm really confused by seeing AOD.

You could say it's independent, stand-alone expansion. It's quite like HoI2 when it comes to the basics but tons of new features, more freedom to modders and several flawed or problematic concepts have been altered, completely changed or fixed to far more reasonable levels (in theory atleast).

I view HoI2 as the best strategy game ever and I think that Doomsday enhanced an already great experience although I never did try the second expansion.

I simply hate HoI3 since the diplomacy system, air combat system, naval combat system, HQ system, define theaters system, Far East AI, AI in general and surrender events are simply infuriating and often game wrecking. HoI3 is much harder to use and has far less sense of player involvement and is in short, not fun. Of course the snail like speeds after '41, epic load times & occasional CTDs/freezes make a bad product worse.

What I like about AoD is a bit harder to say since it hasn't come out yet but assuming that it delivers what it promises it would make the best strategy game ever even better. After reading all of the development diaries it looks like HoI2 will reach it's full potential. I wish it had the ability to build divisions in any fashion the player likes as is the case in HoI3 but that seems to be the only downside.

I would say that if you are unhappy with the air and naval combat and HOI3 AI for SP then AOD would be a good "compliment" to HOI3. AOD for a better historical challenge vs SP AI.

It also appears there is a map mod that will be available with many more provinces than HOI2/AOD which would be my gripe especially for the later year battle scenarios. AOD in my opinion needs more provinces and I think the map with more provinces should have been part of the package along with testing the AI on it.

A new map would raise compatibility issue.

Well I'm actually glad they didn't make a new HOI 3-style map, awash with redundant provinces as it was. The HOI 2 was just right for me and perfect for waging realistic Blitzkrieg campaigns. They did after all increase the length of land combat though. So combine that with a much bigger map and you get a game that in my opinion would be unplayable for some nations or at least very frustrating at the best. As Germany, I just wouldn't have the time and patience to slug through endless Russian steppes up to 1945 or longer. By that time I would want to move on to greener pastures of Canada and US. For me bigger map = less fun. So AoD is perfect as it is with standard number of provinces. In my opinion it is great that we got some variety in terms of new brigades and techs while something that was already good in HoI 2 (the map) remained.

edit: In vanilla HoI 2, ARMA conquering Russia was still too easy/fast, but that wasn't really the map's fault. The increased length/raised difficulty of combat will hopefully erase that issue and make for a more realistic campaign. Because seriously if my Wehrmacht is still stuck in Russia in 1945 than either I'm very incompetent commander (more historic outcome :) ) or the game has some balance issues.

This was a real question that I had and was not 'trying to stir things' up. The things I did not like about HoI2 was the amount of micromanagement and the way the research worked. Those were my main two issues. Both of these work much better imho in HoI3 than 2.

I keep wanting to like HoI2 which is why I kept buying the expansions :) And that is why I wanted to know more details about AoD. While it does add a lot to HoI2, I could not fine out is there enough changes of my main issues to warrent it's purchse.

Normally I would not even bother, but I read that the map has been greatly improved, so that is what has me leaning towards buying it. But I am not sure that just having a better map will offset my other issues. So that is why I thought I would ask the question. To see if the community could help me decide. Not to try and inflame things between people that like HoI3 and those that do not.

hi, now i'm confused.. you say that you do not like the 'micromanagement' in HOI2, but you prefer to play HOI3 which in my humble opinion has a major upgrade in micromanagement with HOI3 going backwards to the micro intensive style of the tech tree that was used in HOI1.

I also didnt like the idea what we are supposed to use a game engine specifically designed for EU3 as a basis for WW2 style battle. the battle styles are totally different. One case in point being now in HOI3 you have a few divisions going at it and the damn game tells u that out of a major battle you have only killed 12 of your enemy... that may have been true with the accuracy of 18th century firearms, but firearm accuracy has come a long way during WW2.

I have other problems with HOI3 but that's for the HOI3 forum.

As for the research... why do you not like tech teams? after all this is a 'war game' not an exercise in tech tree playing?

Also the HOI3 style of diplomacy is terrible, i've seem much better diplomacy in some of the awesome MODs that some of our forum-mates have made and super kudos to all MODDERS out there too!!!!!

Unfortunately, i think i wasted my money on HOI3 and as a person who has been playing computer games on PC for at least 15 years... I havent said i wasted my money buying a game very often.

I would like to hear what else you like about HOI3 vs HOI2.

and the way the research worked.

Basically HoI2 tech tree is sort of compromise between HoI1 and HoI3 tech. While HoI1 and HoI3 tech trees allows more freedom and creativity on few things, ultimately since there is only one truly efficient way of doing things (such as don't upgrade armour for your tanks in HoI3), it ends up the same as having pre-set general ideas of a technology as it is in HoI2. I get the idea of more diverse tech tree being more appealing already from historical point of view, but it still doesn't work exactly as one would expect.

After all, in HoI3 (and somewhat in HoI1 aswell) it's like "have 100 diffrent technology combinations but only 4 are actually useful" ;)
