Great review!

I found the following of particular interest, with so much discussion on various threads about making the ability to airstrike a particular province a user-option.

"The only oddity I found with aerial forces has been that missions are now assigned on a regional, rather than provincial basis. For example, instead of assigning air units to launch attacks Caen, they are launched into the wider region of “Normandy”, which includes a number of provinces in addition to Caen.

This means that rather than concentrating on key provinces, air units wind up being dispersed more than they should be, and this can cause problems particularly when attempting to defend key industrial centres from strategic bombardment. Now in some regions there’s up to a one in five chance that fighters will simply miss the enemy bombers as they drop their deadly cargos upon critical factories and railways."

I knew he liked it but wow thats amazing.
Let them have it at the wargamer forum where the majority hated HOI.

To be perfectly honest, there was a lot to hate about HoI. It was very buggy and took a lot of micromanagement to get the most out of it. I liked the game quite a bit and enjoyed following the development process, but I can easily see why someone else wouldn't enjoy it. HoI2 seems to have really worked to address the major flaws in HoI, and that really speaks well of the Paradox crew. They recognized the weaknesses in the game and worked to fix them without undoing the major strengths.

The last part of the review was the most revealing - the reviewer tried to find major flaws but couldn't. While I'm sure a lot of that was the euphoria that comes from playing a great game, and we'll find problems that need fixing, but overall this looks to be a million times better than HoI was on release.

Yes, I can tell you that both the Paradox crew and the beta testers did all a tremendous jobs to give you a mostly bug-free AND playable game, and they deserve every praise they can get. Not me though, my Security Studies seminars in university took all my free time. So don't praise me. ;)

Also, I sure hope this review will shut the hell up the anti-Paradox folks camping at the Wargamer forum. In your face, whiners! :D

well when you've got 1 precious piece of land surrounded by some worthless territories, one can guess what the bombers will be going for...and I can understand it is frustrating when your planes keep patrolling the worthless provinces instead of defending what really needs to be defended.

You know, having a radar station in a province gives fighters on air superiority a chance to intercept planes in adjacent provinces too.

not really,

you better chew out those bombers before they reach your industry heartland (whatever that province might be) - so defending one province against strategic bombers is pretty useless imho,

those guys will intercept in a certain region - and radar seems to help interception a lot,

basicly this would match fairly well the way it happened during WWII. Bombers where harassed the whole time by fighters on their fly routes,

key industry heartland had extra AA defenses -

I guess I just showed how little I played the original HOI :eek:o I found it too tedious to play. But I have my hopes high for the new one.

PS: Vicky forever ;)
