HoI2 on Vista

Hey guys, hope someone can help with this,
just got a new laptop, a thing of beauty, but i almost cried like a little baby girl when i installed doomsday, got to the nation select bit of single player, and found that as soon as i try to start a new game it crashes back to windows, saying somethings gone wrong and it cant continue. i thought this was because id put a mod on improperly but iv tried again with a clean copy of doomsday and it does the same. does it just not work on windows vista, have i just done something wrong, or is there a vista patch or something i need?

please, please, help me!

Uninstall HOI2 completely.

Install HOI2 again -- this time not in the default directory.

After that install the appropriate 1.3 patch (they are not the same for Regular HOI2 vs DD.

thanks ill give it a go. trouble is every time i uninstall it, and i did that twice trying to fixit, its leaving stuff behind and iv lost over a gig of my hard drive even though ive deleted all trace before reinstalling. thanks again

Here is a hint to help you find some stranded files.

Do a file search for *.eug

Physically delete any folder named HOI2 or Doomsday that is 1-2 levels above it.

Vista problems for me also

First i had the illegal version of doomsday on my comp, but i had bad conscience for having it because hoi2 is a such wonderful game and Paradox Interactive would have earned my money so i bought Hearts of Iron Anthology legally from the local supermarket.

Then i uninstalled the illegal version and installed the legal version using only InstallShield Installer/uninstaller-thingy. After the installation of Antholygy i started the game with newest patches and DD and armageddon installed but after the intro movie the game should be loading the menu but for me it just crashes to desktop with some kind of error report like BritishImperial also
described it.

Then i manually uninstalled the game by using the Castellons instructions and gave it a new go after the new installation, but it still keep CTD:ing.

What should i do?

well i tried what you said - uninstalled, installed, downloaded patch 1.3a for doomsday, tried to start a game, and lo and behold it crashes saying 'a problem caused this to stop working' I HATE VISTA! it was fine on my old, crappy, xp pc. how easy is it to wipe the computer and install xp?

Where exactly are you crashing -- do you see the intro video.

If not do this -- rename the avi folder in the Doomsday directory to aviback.

Then try and run the game

it gets to the nation select screen, then when you select most countries (russia works, and in fact just now i changed nothing but it all worked, but i dont think its fixed) it goes black, flickers a bit, and then crashes to desktop.

This is a regular install of HOI2DD on Vista using a Doomsday CD?

And you are not installing the game in the default directory?

Are you an administrator on the machine?

Did you turn off UAC in Vista.

Are you installing the right patch (sorry just have to ask)

When you install the patch -- does it see the game in the new directory that you created it in?

yep its a regular doomsday cd
yeh i changed the default directory to something different
im the only account on the machine - ive set it to run as administrator on properties
i havent turned off uac as i didnt know anything about it, but i will, thanks.
and that is the patch i used
i dont know where the patch saw the game, but the patch installed fine

ok, will do. apart from it being very annoying when opening files, how can it affect the game? and also is there any chance its to do with my antivirus? becasue i know thats why internet explorer keeps crashing.

It could be the AntiVirus..... try turning that off before you launch the game and see if that is it. Other culprits are File sharing programs like bittorrent etc.

UAC interferes with installing files on the PC so that is why i asked you to turn it off.

ok thanks. another thought i had - when i install the game it brings up a few boxes saying 'setup requires files be installed or uninstalled, and then a really long file name. i say yes... could this cause a problem? although im sure when i installed it on my other pc it was fine with this option.

If you turned off UAC since that error and this install ... then that could have been your problem.....

it is yes, though ill know tomorrow if its just a false alarm - it worked once the other day. but on a preliminary basis ill say you're a genius and thanks so much for your help
