Have made up my mind to acquire this, and plan to start as the USSR - any help for a HoI ignoramus, what mods, how to play as the SU etc. Hope to go for a rather althist first game, (incidentally, can you, in Doomsday armageddon set a start date in 1936 and play 'til the 1980s? Or are your hands tied into historical periods), but general SU tactics are very welcome, into the Cold War as well as WW2.
Build 20 sub divs for 3 iterations. Build IC till 39. Spam Inf in parallels of 20 for 9 or 10 iterations, develop v1 rockets and spam out 20 parallels of those for 4 iterations. Do not perform the purge events and spam consumer goods. Upgrade your army as much as possible, even if it means halting new units (only in peacetime). Build as many tanks and mot inf as you can without compromising the inf spams and upgrades.
Use the V1 rockets to nuke the infra of any German tank assaults after 1941. Have them based in airfields slightly back from the frontlines. You should be able to hold the German assault for the summer and autumn and start pushing west in the winter. You should be at France by 1944.
I just finished a game as the Soviet Union on Very Hard.
1. Disband most of your starting infantry. Keep enough to fight the Winter War with Finland, keep all the tanks, MOT, MTN troops, plus the starting HQ. Place all of your starting units for the finnish war. You will use your infantry to hold Leningrad, use your MOT/TANK and MTN to drive into the heart of finland and trigger the end of the war.
2. After the finish war, disband any remaining INF (In my opinion, it costs too much to upgrade 1918 infantry)
3. Trade for $$, SU is terrible at making cash, and you need it at least for getting decent intelligence
4. Rush INF 41 so you have it by early - early mid 40.
5. Crank out 41 INF and MIL using almost all of your IC, plus a few HQs
Deploy your in a line from leningrad to moscow to stalingrad, put your MTN troops, along with some INF/MIL to protect BAKU.
Let the germans invade and take on land and TC, it should take till September to get towards your lines, and you may give a little ground, but you should be able to hold until winter sets in. Then its really just a matter of attrition to beat back the Germans. I launched my general offensive in the spring of 42 (May after the mud is gone), and had conquered germany by early October.
