HOI IV should provide a usable tutorial.

They should, but the problem with Paradox games is they are constantly under development even post-release. They will need to constantly modify and update tutorials, which they have been very bad at in most of their recent releases.

Yeah, look at EUIV for example. It has changed so much over the years that any in-depth tutorial would need to be partially re-done.

What might be really nice is an in game encyclopedia like TW has. That would be awesome IMO.

The wiki?

I personally "hate" tutorials in most games and I wish it became usual to give the chance to completely switch them off. I can't believe those shooters for example where I spend the first ten minutes or so being told how to crouch. Seriously?
On the other hand, if the game is very complex, I will go on YouTube, wikis...

Couldn't agree more, the HOI3 tutorial with the "angry man" was terrible.

"Angry man"? Apologies for asking, I learned to play HoI3 almost completely using the internet...didn't play the tutorial. What was this stuff?

A good tutorial would be nice, but PDX are in a unique position where a lot of the basics carry over between games and the playerbase is used to using youtube/guides for help if needed so its not a huge priority. It can be a big bar to entry for newer players though.

The Tutorial was instructed by Hitler, though he was never actually named. I found it hilarious.

Not everyone watches Youtube "Tutorials" for Paradox Games, so I would like a good tutorial.

The original CK2 one was aweful, and if you say this was much better then from the games before I don't even wanna know them ^^
The EU IV Tutorial was decent, it helped that there was a Demo a week prior release, where you only could play 10 years or so. You replayed it pretty often and did better each time.
With CM for CK2 there was a new Tutorial, the Leon Scenario. This was pretty good, since it isn't scripted but gives you alot of good hints and explanations.

Honest question, why is that? I suppose in many cases it must be the language barrier.

A while ago I proposed something in this regard, but it's probably too expensive.

Nah, nothing about the language barrier. Although I am German with English as a second language, I watch most of my youtube video from english channels.

What I meant was Let's Play which are some kind of tutorials for the players. I am just not a let's play watcher.

Also I want to learn to play the game by playing it, and later if I got the basic, quickly scan the wiki for relevant information, and don't watch at 15min video for just one fact.

Only way you can have a build a good tutorial in a sandbox game is to have a seperate scenario, scripted to hell and back.

............rather have the man hours spent working on balancng/debugging the game.

EDIT: on a side note, feel free to disagree but "put your name on it". At the minimum, lets see your argument. I am always open to changning my mind.............hmmmm going to add this to my sig

I like the idea of tutorials through scripted scenarios.
A well scripted Battle of Britain scenario could not only be great for teaching air combat, but could be really entertaining as well.

Im playing since HOI I, EU I, CK I and you tell me now paradox games have tutorials.

But now seriuslly personaly i never used tutorials in Paradox games.
For me they were quite easy to undrstand if at times clunky (Hoi3-UI, OOB, suppilies, jumping sliders) games.

Same, I just learned from playing. Of course it took like 200 hours of Hoi3 to do that.

Yeah like the TW encyclopedia that they had in Shogun 2 and Rome2. I still believe that a simple tutorial is needed. An in game resource that you could access at any time for for a greater explanation sounds very appealing to me.

Yeah, but isn't that role covered by the wiki? Any time I have a doubt in EUIV, for example, I look up the wiki. Doesn't need to be built-in in the game though

I've never used a tutorial for a Paradox game, so rather than a tutorial I'd prefer a detailed game manual with detailed information, including many of the equations used for combat, recon, etc, making the game more transparent. Ideally, one that I can order in book form and not just a PDF; a lot of this information will eventually be in the wiki, but it would be nice to have from release and developers have insight into 'under the hood' mechanics that are incredibly difficult to derive from the player's perspective.

With that said, if Paradox hopes to expand the player base beyond the hard-core war gamers who post on the forums and follow strategy games of all types religiously and have been playing them for decades (and, thus, sell more copies), they would probably be well advised to invest in a good tutorial whether I want one or not.

Trial and error is learning that a specific sort of strategy does not work, or that a mechanic has limitations. Trial and error is not being unable to understand such a mechanic because of a lack of tutorial and/or VERY good tooltips
