I am somewhat disappointed that land combat looks like simple combatination between HoI3 and EU4... I expected something more after seeing how naval combat works.

Paradox, please make land/air/naval combat calculations very carefully, because these are difficult to verify, detect. (I'm thinking about Hoi3 defensivness/toughness bug) :)

You can tell the UI is temporary/not final (EU4 art being used for instance).

However the combat didn't change much from HOI3 so there is little need to completely change the UI either.
It doesn't look like temporary UI to me, but I can be wrong.

Maybe it's not the combat itself that's the problem, but I think they could better present how units arrive and how they are placed on a wide front (and how this impacts the actual combat). Current UI does not show this very well - if at all - in format shown above.

What I didnt like, was that author of that article didnt get info/feedback about his losses and where they happened.

I would like to get at least weekly and monthly report with summary of losses and option to list regions(states) and countries, where my armies suffered those losses.

I also hope for ledger with graph capable of showing my weapon type and manpower losses during certain period + their production - that way I would know, (for example) that my tank production is sufficient, but that I need to make more infantry kits and artilery pieces.

Ugh. PI should hire a professional writer to write the descriptions. I mean this game looks good, but this Swedish-English articulation along with the general fart humor (e.g. volksturm icon) really hurts the WW2 atmosphere they're trying to create.

A quick mock-up:

Wow- that idea is great. Simply turn the divisions like that and it looks/feels more like combat. I'd go a stage further and suggest they add irregular small explosions

And what is wrong about reducing map clutter?

IMO, current HoI4 UI seems to be significant improvement over HoI3.
I really like, that I will no longer have to check several map modes, just to see basic info.

Only change that I would like (AFAIK its not present in HoI4) is option to increase size of all UI elements (including text).

Nothing wrong with reducing clutter I am simply pointing out that there is little practical use beyond reducing the clutter, you cannot tell where your individual divisions actually are and to do anything worthwhile you will need to zoom back in again. In effect you have a mechanism that reduces clutter at a level where it does not matter.

Again nothing wrong with having as much information on a single map as possible its how that information is conveyed to the player that matters.

In my opinion it is done badly and Paradox will need to change it somehow, it all stems from an attempt to merge design elements perfectly suitable for a top down view with an angled 3D view.

I believe they are not really compatible especially when you increase the amount of Divisions to a level that we will all expect for a game about WWII which so far Paradox have studiously avoided showing.

I see the reason why you did what you did but how would i be able to see which divisions are currently engaged. i cant read on the "side" easily :p
I could try to save space by using just symbol of a division + bars and not turn them to the side. Or I can turn the whole "background" instead... I will try to do another mock-up tomorrow or the day after.

The use of EU4 terrain pictures should give you a hint about their temporary nature lol.

Also Podcat said they are still tweaking the UI.
The UI looks well put together, even in its current state. No element stands out, like Podcat's cats.

Actually what made me it not feel like combat was the column-like organization. Even Europa Universalis 4 and Crusader Kings 2 did it better.

Really hope that is modable, and increasing the size of the battle box would help.

My favorite gripe came out here too:

My losses were shockingly high, and both my infantry and air force units were badly depleted from the Battle of Warsaw. Nor was it easy to sense how or where those losses occurred. Hearts of Iron doesn’t deliver a clear picture of who is winning and at what cost. This bit of feedback might be one of the trickiest things that Hearts of Iron 4 needs to get right: all their other games give you battle reports, because that works for medieval and early modern warfare. But it doesn’t work for the constant friction of World War 2’s massive battle fronts.

If the battle grinds to a long war of attrition, unlike Poland and more like eastern front, then this point might prove very valid.

Although if the rest of the game comes out as fine as the early previews indicate, I don't find that too catastrophic.

Hearts of Iron: Total War, maybe it would be cool if I could jump into battles and watch them unfold.

*cough* ROME 2 *cough*... Putting everything on the map, is bad bad bad design, "streamlined" .... There is nothing wrong with having to go to a sub menu which blocks the map, yes the map is good looking and all, but it is NOT that good......

That is not an argument against having all information on one map.

Well you obviously were not a fan of the Total War series, it most certainly is an argument. Other than the fact that it made the map lag horrible during gameplay, they decided to "steamline", meaning removal of features from Shogun 2. Why? Most certainly because it would cover the beautiful map, but diplomacy, city view, settlement details, recruitment, everything was crammed on the screen in a way as to not distract you from the glory of the map. The map was gorgeous though, but to be honest, it was horrible design not to have something like a settlement details screen when it was completely necessary. It made everything uninformative, felt like everything was forced onto the screen, and it was not as easy to read.

If you didn't live Rome 2, then you probably wouldn't understand, but I see Paradox making similar mistakes and I am concerned by that.

Sincerely i prefer everything was forced onto the screen, than continuous changes of map modes.
90% of HOI3 ppls only use a single map mode loosing a lot of information, because map modes switch was an hell.
About mistakes, maybe PI is correcting them from previous titles, but its my opinion.
If you like this kind of tedious gameplay, HOI3 its just released.

I don't want production stuck in a column on the side of my screen, so i have to scroll to infinity to find anything. Just because the map is "pretty", if something deserves its own menu that covers the map like production or diplomacy please take my eyes off the map, I don't want all information on one column on left of screen the entire game, scroll simulator...... You can have most information on one map fine, but don't force everything else into a small corner.

Hearts of Iron: Total War, maybe it would be cool if I could jump into battles and watch them unfold.

Occasionally somebody asks for that. Way to micro and would never get a war finished.

Just MORE immersion in for the representation if battles would be good, and definitely more details, like loses, somewhere.
