I also have the same issue, except that it crashes when I start the game, not just after 20 minutes.

Before we go any further, let me say that I installed my game from my purchased CD a few years ago.
I have updated my version to 1.4
It worked fine when I played about six months ago.
I misplaced my key when we moved. I don't know where it is.
I can't register the game with Paradox because I can't find my key.
I can't start a new thread about this issue OR download the 'super patch' that seems to be referred to in some links that I've because I can't register the game.

I'm effectively stuck.

The error I get is c0000005. Here's the actual details:

Well completely uninstalling and re installing the game usually works

Did you try launching the game through the launcher (Not steam but in the directory) to see if that changed anything?

This might be far fetched but I has an issue where the TEMP File was filled to the brim and the game would crash every 20 min but using CCleaner I cleaned it out. Game still crashes every 2-3 hours but thats what autosave is for. Plus I can tell when it's about to crash because autosave takes longer then normal.

A friend of mine is having a similar issue with the game. He had a laptop with a graphics card and the game wold always crash. For some strange reason the graphics card made the game crash. Switching it to integrated graphics resolved the problem.

Let me know if any of these things work for you

If you are using laptop with two video card, set the game .exe file by launching with your best video card and do not start the game from steam or launcher. Start the game with hoi3_tfh.exe in the game folder and you'll have zero or less random crash.

It is with some embarrassment that I admit I didn't try that.

I ran the installer and launched a repair. That fixed everything. My game works.

I did not have to delete files or clear out any directories.

Thank your for the responses.

I had the exact same problem, here's what I do to fix it.

(OPTIONAL) I'm a bit of a sad person when it comes to howmany hours I have on a game, so first thing I do is launch it in steam (just the launcher) so at least people see I'm playing the game.

(FIX) go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Hearts of Iron 3 find hoi3_tfh.exe, the launcher for their finest hour, right click and make sure it always launches as admin, simply play the game from their, as admin.

Don't try to add it to steam as a "non steam game" because it will induce crashing.

Keep in mind this isnt the best fix in the world, I will still crash from time to time, but ONLY when I am tabbing in and out of the game (Usually to check steam messages because I can't get it to run with steam  ...

I hope this helps, honestly if you're lazy like me and can't be bothered to find the real cause of the crashing, this will do it for ya :)
