Hi-Waiting for 1/4/05. Will HOI II be simular to 1.06b&c with distance penalties? I play US. Also, any other simularities? Thanks, Hugh Browne

I'm not sure if this has been discussed in public yet, so under the beta-tester non-disclosure agreement I can't comment on the specific point (but in 3 days everyone can comment). But to respond to the general question: the game is recognisably of the same family as HoI 1 (unlike, say, Master of Orion 3 and Tropico 2, which were clearly by different designers to the earlier game(s)): the same theme, the same ability to play all countries, the mix of production, resaearch, diplomacy and military activity, and so on.

On the other hand, major aspects have been changed to make them easier to play - for instance, unit upgrades are handled by assigning ICs to the overall task of upgrading your army, with priorities you choose, rather than having to manage each unit, and convoys are handled efficiently by the AI unless you really want to order them by hand. Conversely more flexibility has been built into tactical planning, with a big range of air missions (but again, the option to give your air units a general instruction and then leave them to get on with it).

Overall it is clearly a sufficiently different game to make it worth buying if you like this sort of game, but IMHO sufficiently similar that the learning curve for HoI 1 players shouldn't be too steep.

I suppose you mean the logistical distance penalty. That's not implemented in the same way in HoI II. However, there are other range and supply restrictions of various sorts. In HoI 1, invading Tokyo from Los Angeles would give you a large combat penalty. In HoI II, I don't think you can do it at all - you will need a closer base and so will have to island-hop.

I just hope that you can have a closer base. In HOI it had to be the closest terrain that you annexed so Japan would have gained nothing by taking Hawaii and invading from there. Hopefully this time around you'll be able to use Hawaii as a base
