Brigades?
The columns are rather Regiments, with typical 3 battalions each, with possibility up to 5 battalions. Unless I have missunderstood something.

The game seem to use a mix of brithish and USA terminology. Thus, we get brigades (the equivalent of a regiment in the US and many other armies. Brigade didnt exist as such in the US army, altough they made what they called "Combat Commands") and battallions (which, in the UK were also called regiments).

On the other hand, regiments always had a bit of local flavour. It was more an administrative unit than a combat one. Brigades and battalllions were more combat units than a regiment.

All this is in general terms.

Yeah, a regiment was more of a historical term for a force raised in a geographic area. Typically a regiments battalions would be serving in different divisions. Probably because it would be quite a loss if such a large chunk of the young men of a province were all made into casualties at once. But you did see them together occasionally in WW2.

<sigh> Gotta love how different service branches in the same country use completely different terminology for the same thing. Causes no end of confusion.

USMC uses Regiments, not Brigades. A Brigade in the USMC would be a Regimental size unit that is NOT attached to a Division.

Hello, I've read about how hoi4 distinguishes units, and it's about as weird as hoi3 was at it.
Now before i say anything, just note that this is my personal opinion, i'm not trying to be a smartypants, in fact i'm pretty sure i'm wrong, and would like to get a better insight on how the whole command/perspective works. Despite all of the criticism, i still liked hoi3 a lot and paradox games in general :)

So, as far as i'm aware, from my limited military knowledge, military formations/groups always consist of 3~5 "sub classes", which is about as many as a human being can micromanage efficiently.
Here's a picture to demonstrate my point.
formations.jpg

I was really bugged by the notion of a commander having 16 brigades under his command? Why not just 3 Divisions, why skip a whole formation? Shouldn't the smallest unit be something like a Brigade (Since smaller units would need higher fidelity map/terrain), and then go up by a factor of 3?
This is something that really put me off when playing previous HOI games.

Another thing that i dislike are the 3d images of soldiers walking around, i'd prefer to just see nato identifiers, the 3d thing is a real turnoff at least for me.

As others have stated in this thread, this chain of command isn't correct for WW2. Every nation had its own because of tradition, army org., etc.

But you can't implement that into a game as it would confuse the hell out of players who don't really know how the historical thing worked.

So in the end they chose a comprehendible form, which is the same for every nation. And I like it that way because you have a lot of freedom on the comp of your divs.

What bothers me is the omission of the corps and army group level of command and the fact that i'm not going to be able to turn off the sprites.
I mean the map looks incredibly beautiful but i don't like sprites because you will for sure loose track of what is happening and who is going where after a battle.
