At least the OP isn't asking that players initially can only play as US, UK, USSR, Germany, and Japan, with all other countries locked off and sold as (possibly day-one) DLC. Total ick.

Sorry for the non-sequitur, but I honestly have no idea what the OP means in terms of movement, aside from eliminating provinces which would completely impede the notion of development, infrastructure, industry, supply, etc on a province level.

He wants units to move anywhere they want(like in a RTS, for example age of empires unit movement, where soldiers represent divisions and the map is the world. Bad example, but freedom of movement that is not locked to provinces. Actually better example is total war Strategy map), and maybe even to choose 'density'(for example, dragging a division over a 100 km front with little depth or over 20 km front but with more effectiveness, like you can in total war battle map). Currently, divisions are inside a single province, with arrows indicating their movement, but those arrows mean nothing. I don't see why removing development from provinces would be necessary. Sure, there is a question of what happens to province production if you are duking it out in the middle of the province, but it's fairly irrelevant in this discussion...

Thanks. I think I understand now. That's an interesting idea, but I think probably would need a game built around it. For HOI, my gut says that it wouldn't really work (and would probably over-simplify things in a way, while also creating a lot more micro). At least I get the point now. Thanks again for explaining!

Yeah, I don't think it has any chance of being in HOI4 due to how Clausewitz engine works. I don't have insider info, but I'm pretty sure from observations that Clausewitz definitely is not built for that...

The issue with the current system is that you can have a unit move for 6 of the 7 days needed to exit a province, and if attacked by a unit coming from the opposite end of the province (which would probably be several hundred miles away), they instantly teleport 6 days worth of movement back to the center of the province. After fending off the attack, they have to start their movement all over again from scratch.

A coordinate location system for units, with major cities as the focal points to click for movement orders, rather than province borders and instantaneous jumps after a certain time delay, would solve that issue, but make intercepting or avoiding an enemy formation a lot more awkward to program and control. As said, I don't think the Clausewitz engine is set up to handle things in that manner.
