Who's out of touch here, exactly? If they get more engagement on Instagram (20x!), are those people not their community as well?
That's the point I made. Do they want high numbers on some fancy looking statistic? Or a high amount of engagement by the people buying their products (aka, the playerbase)?
Believing that 20x views on Instagram must equal 20x engagement proves a complete lack of understanding of how engagement-based Social Media operates, and is operated. Showcasing that lack of understanding is perfectly fine for your average person, but not exactly acceptable for a Community Manager, who's sole purpose is specifically to represent their company (or a product thereof), towards the public, usually on said Social Media.
That said, I'll be damned if I start doing the details for Instagram as well, so for all I know maybe that one platform is
for some magical reason completely different and consequently a 20x views metric actually translates to some degree (maybe 2x? Heck, technically 1.1x would be valid enough) of 'higher engagement measured in profits'. It's not impossible. But regardless of that, it was very clear that Mr. Community Manager was flaunting those "20x more engagement!" values with purpose, so I'll leave it at the judgement implied with my original comment.
I just disagree with comparing this to something like Diablo Immortal. Save that hyperbole for if HoI5 is announced as a mobile game!
Fair, it WAS a bit hyperbolic, since it's both smaller in scope AND significance. But I couldn't resist making the jab by drawing the parallel, also in curiosity as to whether Mr. CM would even recognize the reference. I considered adding a "(And I sincerely hope I do not also have to explain what THAT means.)", but felt that would be a bit too thick.
