I've done this a few times, and puyi always remains. However for me taking assertive does add two new political parties (bringing down stab at the same time)

For me he was just gone, and for some reason Mao's China became annexed by Sinkiang without a war. It started with Mao declaring war on Chiang, and shortly after Mao's China got annexed by Sinkiang through unknown means.

I have the same issue. Assertiveness also makes Manchukuo a puppet (instead of an Imperial Associate) and puts an unaligned party in charge. I did some testing and for me this happens only if Japan takes the Showa Restauration focus to become unaligned itself.
