How similar (from watching HOI 4) are HOI3 and HOI4?

And, would it be beneficial for someone who has never played a HOI game to play HOI 3 in the remaining month before release?

Thank you for any help on this matter.

Impossible to say for certain since none of us have played the game, but from what we've seen so far it seems quite different to its predecessor.

I'd say it'd probably be more helpful to play Darkest Hour over HOI3. Seems more similar to HOI4 and well, I personally just prefer it. Really though, I don't think you need to play any previous HOI games.

Probably about a 50% overlap. A lot of the same combat concepts remain, and there are a number of other game mechanics that are similar, but they're essentially like any two unrelated games from the same development team.

I can see reasons to play one or the other, and to prefer one versus the other, so buying HOI3 at this point is purely a personal choice kind of thing.

I don't know if it'd be that beneficial to play HOI3. It can be incredibly intimidating, and many of the things you need to get the hang on, like organsing your order of battle and keeping units in range of HQs, you won't even need at all in HOI4. Production and politics and a number of other key/core things work very differently, too.

I compiled a list of ways HOI4 is deeper than 3 (see my sig), but in general, as was said it's like comparing EU3 and EU4. Looks like a pretty different beast, for better and for worse.

I think if I were the OP I would concentrate my time and effort on reading the DD's, watching the WWW's, reading posts on the forum, signatures etc. rather than purchasing HOI3 now. HOI3 is a very good game and worth the money but to try to learn it with about a month to go before the launch of HOI4 knowing full well once 4 is released you're not going to play HOI3 any longer.

I read your article comparing hoi3 and hoi4, thanks for doing that, very useful and informative.

Hoi4 looks great for ww2 era, but what about a modern day scenario with missiles, uav's, helicopters etc etc. MDS was made successfully with hoi2 and darkest hour, not sure about hoi3.

Do you think hoi4 will be capable of the above?

I'd agree with @JerkyJerry on this one, unless your a lot more into the micro like some of us and or have played/enjoyed a game like GG's War in the East/West etc. which makes HOI3 look like a Vodka and pretzels game then best to read up on HOI4 and wait a month.

Edit: Actually I have only played Black Ice mod for the past 3 years so I'm probably not making a good comparison with vanilla TFH.

So far, HoI3 looks like World in Flames while HoI4 looks like Axis & Allies... So I'm not sure I'll be an early buyer of HoI4. Probably best to wait and assess, like Manstien said.

Yeah, if you've played Spreadsheets in the East or other micro-heavy games you'll feel right at home. Otherwise, you'll probably easily find it tedious and un-engaging, at least at first -- I know I did. You pretty much need the DLCs, up to Their Fines Hour, too, they do a lot of tweaking and polishing.

I like both Hearts of Iron 3, BlackICE, and War in the East today, but I took time to get used to even the idea of each of them.

HOI4 looks a lot more accessible, while still fun as heck, just in a different way.

My own suspicion is that HOI4 is going to need another 6-12 months of patching and expansions before it seriously eclipses HOI3. Easier to learn than 3, yes, definitely. Better? Probably not at release.

I already play as much Hearts of Iron 4 as I do Hearts of Iron 3, so Hearts of Iron 3 is in serious trouble. :)

I'd have to play a lot to do so... 1st to get my hand on the game. But after 3 years of gaming in HoI3 at least once a week, well, lot of games to do

Remembering the train-wreck that was the initial HoI3 release back in 2009. I'd still have spent the money, because the platform was rough, but near perfect for tuning. And, outside of no direct control over supply path and stockpiles, is now very fun for me. It's got many differences from 4. But it had an incremental change versus 2. So this will just be a bigger shift.

Wait. Watch. Listen. Read. Let's plays will be of great help to prospective buyers. Though the current releases and knowing how hard it is for a handful of people to iron-out all the bugs of such a massive title...there will be issues. Especially the further along people get into a game and start throwing all those curve-balls at the AI. God knows I can't wait for Error Dog to be barking away! :D

But I have 1000's of hours on HoI3 alone. And 1000's from other HoI's. So that speaks to the amazing, long-term results from the work of Paradox!

Will buy!
Remove models.
Add counters.
Conquer Poland.
Profit!
