I got a solution...

let me play USSR, my strategy and tactics will be as bad as RL and I will need every advantage of terrain and weather just to hold a line... :p

The problem is you veteran players know the game too well, let the newbies take the major players and see what happens :D Put myself, Gezeder (soz mate), Ric and Albatross in USSR, USA, Japan and Uk and u veterans take Italy, Spain, Australia etc

I think some comments from all sides are valid to a degree.

Just one point though - just because one player tries something and it doesn't work, doesn't mean others cannot do something different with the same nation and succeed. Eg, Maybe if Major played Spain, he'd have done something different than BB. Maybe if BB had played Germany, things would have turned out differently.

Just don't get too hasty and make snap decisions based on 1 game.

And to assume that you can somehow build a navy for 'free' is ludicrous sorry mike. You put alot of effort into distracting the allies - fine - it has its benefits. But in terms of winning the game, the Atlantic does not decide things - the Russian front does. Thus, Germany, and Italy's focus from day 1 should be aimed at how to march into Red Square, not anything else.

Put simply, that IC spent on CV's, etc could just as well be spent on more useful naval bombers to defend against invasions, or into brigades to equip your armour with. Use engineers if you need to cross the river, but then swap them with tank destroyers to beat the Soviet armour in turn.

Anyways, my 2 cents is to suggest whole sale rule changes until you see a pattern. 1 game, or even 2 with the same German player does not make a pattern.

New player as Germany..different tactics, builds, ideas.....I understand where Mike is coming from. Only time he had any success against Russia was with Nolan who was playing the mfor the first time in a 4 player game. Also Mike I am not considering building an entire army of mountain troops or marines. Was thinking of having a limited number to bring up to an area of the front you would like to breach. I will play Germany next game in a basic version of the game(we can look at mods later when they sort out the bugs). I am sure different ideas will make a little difference. Also I know how close Germany came to actually making the Russians suffer huge losses in the first year. To the Germans they may have felt they were outnumbered and outmatched but I will say once more like I already have...... You were very close to breaking the front open in the 38 scenario. Not sure in the Tuesday game how close you were. At one stage you were gloating that the UK hadnt built a navy to match yours but I dont have the luxury of rknowing what you are building. Why is it neccessary to build up a massive army so early and have to supply it. Why is it not possible to have reiforcements gradually arriving as required rather than build the entire army and upgrade it 2 years before war. I understand and read all your arguments and agree with some. All I am saying is a different German player may do things a little different to what you have done.

To put it simply I think we can conclude:

We can't call the game broke till we've tried it several times in different ways. Put all players in unfamiliar countries and try again. The results will be different.

I call USA :D

I do have to make one comment, this theme about how the Axis very nearly broke Russia in our game - the Soviets may have been hard pressed, but let's face facts:

History 1941: - Germans encircle and destroy half the red army. Leningrad is besieged, Moscow is attacked, the important rivers are crossed and only winter saves the russian army. (All debatable I guess, but it's close enough!)

Our Game 1941: - Germans advance to second river, attack halts. A few major battles, Russian line does not break. No Soviet divisions destroyed. Moscow & Leningrad miles and miles from the front lines. Only significant ahistorical gains in Baku.

History 1942: - Germans launch strike in south, all the way to Stalingrad. Stalingrad nearly falls, massive encirclement destroys half of German army and the Germans never recover. 2 years later the Russians are marching through Poland on to Berlin.

Our Game 1942: - Germans launch strike in south, doesn't even hold one provence before falling back. No encirclement of German army is necessary to throw the Germans back, line falls back fast come good weather. 1 month later the Russians are marching through Poland on to Berlin.

It may have been 'Close' - but history was a LOT closer eh?

Dont blame Mike :p He,s the only player who has been game (mad) enough to play the Germans. (He does love it though)

As I have posted again and again it,s not German incompetance but the lack of Allied incompetance early in the war that makes it harder for Germany to keep attacking for a few more years as they did in the war.

I have posted before that an early attack by Germany on the Allies and the Soviets 37-38 may bring about a more historic ebb and flow of the war. The Allies and Soviets should be much weaker than in 39. Maybe a good move would be to bring Japan into the Axis much earlier too. Japan could even attack the USA earlier and catch the Yanks without an Army.

I didnt even want to play Germany in this game due to the same old experiences all over again in Russia.

To be honest there is no easy answer.

Also remeber omni was under attack from 3 fronts involing the most of the armies of Italy/Germany/Japan and still they held, despite being pushed back on all 3 fronts the fronts did not break. Had we not had this 3 pronged assult the WAR would have been over in 1941 (about june 23rd i think i would have called for peace).

No amount of planing of builds by Germany will defeat or even come close to the USSR in a 1936 scenario. It is only by a combined effort by all 3 nations to soley go after the USSR, including japan forgetting about it east asian empire and going after Siberia and hence concentrating alot more on its army. I think then and only then can the Axis maybe win.

Then again a small error by the russian player and 30-40 divisions get encircled the war could also be won. The answer is simple there is no easy answer. The thing that concerns me most is that this scenario will continue to repeat itself game after game. I will never play the USSR as i will never bring myself to mass my armies on the river line, it would give me to many nightmares from my German experience.

Enough said.

Absolutly not, I think you did a spirited defence, and I don't fault a single move you made in the whole game.

My point was merely that, Axis gains in Russia in our game nowhere near approach the historical, and the constant claims of how we nearly broke you pale in light of the fact that we simply took nowhere near as much land, nor did as well as historical ;)

I agree -- the game is not broken -- the variables include:

1. Players, their skill, style of play and the events they choose,

2. The game versions -- 1.3 and some of the mods, will soon be released,

3. The game rules and modifications that we make/change along the way.

The experience can only get better.. :D :D :D

Cheers

In all probability, I won't be able to make the next two sessions. Perhaps one of those new guys could take over Russia for the next 2 weeks.

Bummer Husayn,

But I don't know if it's fair to deny you victory (probable!) in the east,

My understanding is we're playing out the Tuesday game so we can all see it through, & the Allies/Comintern get their spot in the sun. Seems a bit pointless to do that without the Comintern..

Perhaps the new 2 nights a week game could be run Monday & Tuesday instead, until Husayn can play again?
