I once did a research paper on this subject. Basically, Hitler envisioned a heirarchy of nations along racial lines, with Great Germany at the top, followed by other Germanic nations including Britain and Scandinavia; then came the Roman states, of which Italy would be the most dominant, although France, having a measure of Germanic blood in its population, would remain a separate entity. Then came the Slavic nations, which would have a subservient role, as specialised producers of comodities for German consumers. Russians and Eastern Slavs (especially those with mixed Asiatic blood) were at the bottom, fit to serve as slave labour for new German colonies to be established in Russia. Jews and Gypsies were to be deported from Europe or exterminated.

Which all just goes to confirm an earlier observation - Hitler was a LOONEY.

The Grinch, I read recently that the mass sterilization experiments in Auschwitz probably were done with the Slavs in mind, since the Jews, homosexuals, physically and mentally ill etc were to be killed off right away and peoples such as the French spared. Presumably the idea was to let the Slavs work hard when helping the German settlers in the East build their cities and then quietly fade from history. True or false?

WWI. Portugal was neutral throughout WWII, a good deal of diplomatic activity by the Allies being to ensure this remained the case (Portuguese entry into the war on the Axis side, whom the Portuguese leadership favoured, would have been just another distraction for the Allies, one they couldn't really be bothered with.)

I'd have to check that, but it sounds quite plausible. The geopolitical theories embraced by the Nazis equated space with power, and Eastern Europe to the Urals was to become an integral part of the new German superstate. A non-German indigenous population would have been decidedly inconvenient. However the Nazis were rather adept at exploiting human beings as expenadable resources. The plan you describe is very much in keeping with these ideas.

All this presumes a Nazi victory in WWII, however, and in such an even i'm not sure USEFUL Jews, homosexuals, etc. would have been exterminated right away. There is evidence that these groups were exterminated with greater urgency as the Germans began to lose the war. For Hitler, it became a race against time to rid Europe of these groups.

If you're interested, a classic study on this subject is The Meaning of Hitler by Sebastian Haffner - although I found it very troubling to read. Never in my studies had I experienced such revulsion as when I entered the mind of Hitler through this book. The man should not have been walking the street, let alone leading a country.

To quote the book I was talking about, "The economic resources of the whole continent were to be regulated and influenced from Berlin; Germany would become the major industrial state, selling its goods to the more agrarian, primary resource producing states on its borders. A large, new central-eastern industrial region streatching from Selisia to the Black Sea would provide Germany with high living standards, and change the ballance of the European industrial economy."

Greater Germany would incorporate all of Poland, Austria, Alsace-Loraine, and what we today call the Check republic. Slovakia was to be given to Hungary, along with transilvania. Albania would take land from Greece, and Yougoslavia would be renamed Croatia except for montenegro, which would be seperated. Serbia would be a small yet seperate nation as well. Macidonia would be carved out of Greece, and a small area would be carved out of Greece on the border with turkey. That area is not named on the map. Rumania would take generous parts from Russian Bessarabia, and Finland would take all of what the USSR had in Scandinavia. France was To get the entire North West Alpine area that belonged to Italy. Russia would be divided into areas here listed by size from greatest to least: Siberia, Muscovy, Turkestan, Ukraine, Caucasus, and Ostland.

Rugen in GG, was supposed to be the world's largest seaside resort, with 75km of beach, and 14mil tourists annually. Trondhelm was supposed to be the worlds largest naval port with a pop of 300,000. GG was to be divided up into SS military sections. There was going to be a major railway link built from Munich to Rostov. Cities were to be organized into three categories: leader cities: for massive rebuilding, industrial capitals, and finance capitals. There were many new autobahns planed, including one from Berlin to Moscow, and one from Berlin to sevastapol.

Jews, Gypsies and other "undisireables" along with some Bellorussians, Ukrainians, most Russians, and various small non-slavic ethnic groups were to be exterminated. Some Ukrainians, Belorussians, Russians, and certain small non-slavic ethnic groups were to be transported east. Some Russians, most Ukrainians, most Bellorussians, and most non-slavic small ethnic groups would be germanized. The rest of the land would be occupied by German settlers and Volksdeutch.

Referring to the same book, Bulgaria got some territory from Serbia, which was about it's 1900 size. Greece also had territory given to Italy. "Croatia" was split down the middle between German and Italian influence zones. Russia was split into 3 military zones: Nord, Mitte, and Sud I believe. They are effectively North, Middle, and South. The east would be settled by settlements about 50km apart, and connected by autobahns. Switzerland was split between Germany, Italy, and France. Britian would, IIRC, be left alone for the most part, as a tributary state.
