Why would someone who finds the whole concept of Nazi Germany so abhorrent, terrifying and pregnant with malice be playing a WW2 grand strategy game in the first place?

Assuming you do not intend to say that Nazi Germany was a nice place to be, although it sounds like it: Because it is a game about warfare in WW2, not Nazi Germany. And while the latter had a major part in the former, there is a huge difference.

If WW2 was just about the war and not the other things that are not to be dicussed here, neither the symbols nor faces would be censored. To give an example: WW1 content is not banned, I can run around with a Kaiserreich-flag all day if I want.

That option won't be available in Germany, for legal reasons.

Previous versions shipped as a single German language version, that some distribution outlets shipped to other places that spoke German (Austria, Switzerland), but HOI4 is delivered by Steam. Steam knows exactly what country you are in, and provides content accordingly. Not least because it needs to know what currency you will be paying in.

They confirmed that in Scotland (?) Hitler's face can be enabled. And I think you can take it that the presenter (who is from Scotland) meant that this could be done everywhere in the world, except Germany.

Seeing Hitler or not won't change anything about the game mechanics or how the AI will behave. Ok, if you are in love with that Austrian loser it may make a difference if HOI4 is the only way you are able to get a look at him but for the rest of the people playing the game it will make no difference if there is a picture of Adolf Hitler or one of Charlie Chaplin depicting "The Great Dictator" for example.

If its such a non issue then why censor it period outside of countries with those stupid censorship laws? Why even imply that it would be that way?

There's a part of me which would be happy to have the censored version if only so I don't have a weird nagging guilt in the back of my head in leading Hitler to victory. Granted there are several other odious characters uncensored yet none of them have that same ingrained repulsion towards them as Hitler as his leading circle.

Why would you have nagging guilt leading a game version of Nazi Germany to victory? I doubt you;d eel the same guilt, cleansing tens of thousands of people from your militrary, and simulating the killings of millions in one of the 5 year plans as Stalin.

I get that. But why are we discussing the Censoring of Hitlers portrait then? It ls naive to say that German censors do not censor him for the things he is responsible for. There's a connection.

But anyway, I was just saying that having guilt while playing a game is misplaced.

I have never been able to play germany in hoi 3. In part because of disgust but also because it the boring, obvious choice like the UK in V2. At the same time I have no problem playing Japan in HoI3 or a fascist CSA in V2. It's a matter of distance (time, space, less knowlage) making the problematic elements very abstract. Nazis are still very much present in the germany and austrias collectiv memories. Guilt and disgust are emotional responses and have nothing to do quantified deaths. It's also not the issue at hand here. AFAIK nobody is arguing the portrait definitly has to be banned from the game. So what's the problem?
