184 Accuracy - 63 Defense = 121

That's without my roll, so 121 + 66 = 187 which should be a crit.

How's this a hit? o_O

I'm guessing Deflection downgraded your crit to a hit.
LE: Oh wait no, you needed to roll between 72 and 100 for a crit, you rolled 66.

Gotta say tho, having such a massive advantage stats wise, that is not a high enough crit chance.

Roll 66 means that you got into 16-71 range, that is normal hit.

I get that, but what of my massive "Accuracy vs. Defense" advantage? Is it a purely cosmetic piece of information with no bearing on reality? 'cause my advantage in the screenshot was 121; the only way my final result could have been 66 is if the die had rolled -55 and I don't think it's possible to roll negative numbers.

High accuracy increases the crit range... With lower accuracy you would see instead something like miss 1-5, graze 6-15, hit 16-80, crit 81-100... The important thing is to reduce the graze to min (ie 6-15 range) and for that your accuracy has to be higher than enemies defense by at least 50; after that, with the Scales of Mercy you can maximize your crit chance (85%) by converting all your hits to crits.

To maximize your riposte chance you need of course 100% graze deflection and your defense must be higher than enemies accuracy by at least 75 - this will ensure 90% misses... Since most enemies have around 200 accuracy at lv21 you need at least 275parry if you want to have 90% riposte chance. (Graven Ashe however has something like 250 parry and accuracy)

This is not D&D. d100 roll is not used to add to attack. It is just used to decide which of 4 hit choices you will get. And for 121 advantage, that is 29% chance for crit, 56% to hit, 10% to graze and 5% to miss. You rolled the hit, which is most common result (56%).

Andrea, unexpectedly Hit Resolution in Tyranny is very different from the one used in Pillars of Eternity.

Here, the difference between attacker's effective accuracy and targets effective defense determine the Hit Thresholds (in a very unorthodox, read unPoEish manner).

In your case it is:
- Miss: 1-5
- Graze: 6-15
- Hit: 16-71
- Crit: 72-100

You rolled 66. It is between 16 and 71. And that's a Hit.
No precision, or any kind of conversions (due to scales of mercy or other things) had place in that screenshot.

Now your question might be, why the thresholds are that... weird. I've took a peak into the code and updated the afore-linked wiki. (see the thresholds and attack resolution sections 1.2-1.5)

P.S. I would also like to attract attention to the magical constants used (CombatCritChanceSkillPercent and CombatCritChanceMult).

P.P.S. Also to answer an un-asked question: how much accuracy advantage is it worth to stack.
The answer is: 50 is enough.
Explanation: This will reduce miss chance to the minimum of 5% and graze to the minimum of 10%. It will not get lower than that. As for crits... crit threshold increase is very low compared to the amount of effective acc and weapon skill you need to rise. Especially when there is a so much cheaper way to crit on 85% of swings due to scales of mercy.
