When you want to go back to view an earlier part of a movie on your vidieo player you just hit the rewind button. Also when you want to go back and listen to an earlier song on your tape player you just hit the rewind button unless you have a CD player then you just hit the goback button.

This brings me to my latest topic......."I Don't Like The Way The Game Is Going So I'm Going To Go Back To An Earlier Time!"

I'm sure that everyone who has played the game has applied this technique....at least once.:)

I'm also sure we all had a good reason to "go back". Now how would you rate your cheat....errr I mean your go back? Lets say on a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 used to rate a tiny little cheat, and 10 used to rate a major cheat....like if you're gonna cheat this bad why not just lower the settings!:)

So when replying to this thread just describe in your own words why you had to "go back", and give it a rating....from 1 to 10. Now if you're not fair about the rating you give your excuse....errr..your "go back":) everyone reading it will come back and hound you relentlessly or they may have done the same thing and you'll be buddies. Whatever.

I'll start the ball rolling...........

This one I personally rate as a 1. You be the judge........

I declared war which lowered my stability by 2 points. I then opened the box containing tech levels and moved my stability button to the right. I notice it will take over a year for the first point. A year and some months go by...my trade level improves. My stability should have gone up +1 now. Oh well I'll wait another month. After a few more months go by I open the tech level box to see whats going on. When I open the box I realize I did not slide the stability button to the right, instead I moved the trade button to the right. The trade button is right below the stability button.....simple mistake. Or was it? In real life stuff like this happens all the time and is dealt with.

Usually I'm only going back if the game crashes. But there are those occasions when something REALLY unexpected happens, and I'm falling back to avoid spending an hour just to get out of troubles.

In a recent game, I wished to attack a minor nation, don't remember wich exactly. I checked their land forces by clicking on their capital, and of course the result was "weak". So, confident enough, I crossed the border with two 25K armies and layed siege over the first two provinces. Then suddenly, mere days after, I was attacked by TWO armies of 45K, made solely of cavalry (can you believe it? ). The game had just started, so my own forces were utterly destroyed; and with them my only worthy general!

So I thought "Hey, anyway, their all cavalry armies won't be able to take my fortified provinces, so it's just a minor setback". Then I realized that I would have to spend the next few hours just to rebuild my armies, lift sieges, and praying god that no other country attacks me......
So I confess, I reloaded the game and didn't declare war (at least for a while, until I was really strong enough to make an easy kill). After all, the computer shouldn't have told me they were weak, while 90K cavalry could have stormed the totality of my troops.

But I hate to do this, so I'll rate this cheating about 7-8. And I abandonned the game a short time after, because I felt guilty :p

I usually save the game imediately after I start it, after making initial adjustments, sliders, tax revenue, army builds, etc...in case I forget something.

If I ever go back its because I forgot to do one of these things...usually its forgetting to change my revenue research settings. I hate starting out with inflation early.

I've done it occasionally, typically for one of three reasons. First, the game crashed. I rate this a 0 on a scale of 1-10, since there's absolutely nothing else to do except abandon the game and start over from the very begining. More often, it's because I forgot to do something important or the computer didn't handle something the way the rule book says it should; I'd rate this something like a 2 cheat. Examples are finding out that it's not taking borders into account in timing the moves of a unit (I pay particular attention to what day of the month I want a unit to reach a province) or when I'm supposed to lose a certain number of points of stability and it docks me an extra point for no reason, or I reset my budget on the last day of the month but forget to close the dialog box before resuming the game so it doesn't update my changes. The final type is when I have no intention of continuing the game along these lines, but want to see what would happen. For example, wondering "Am I ready to actually fight a war with Mysore yet?", so I declare war and fight it out for a while, just to see. I'd rate this a 1, EU-zen being it's like generals having their army fight mock battles and war games.

All in all, I don't think I'd call this a cheat, although I wouldn't object if someone else did call it that. Not like giving all my leaders ratings of 10/10/10/-10, or all my monarchs 25/25/25, or adjusting unit or research costs. Now that is cheating.

I admit this is a full "9" cheat but 90% of the times I reload to avoid the (-3 Stability / Halved Tech investments in commerce/infrastructures) event, because I simply hate it!
I'm quite a warmonger, so I usually run quite large and multi-religion empires and this event means becoming crazy for at least 3-4 years in quenching revolts until Stab returns at least to +2.

I only do it if the game crashes or if I want to try a certain strategy and I don't know if it will work or not. Just for purpose of interest...that scale of 1 - 10, I would be a 3 I think.

I used to cheat massive amounts, but now I'm down to money (+200d events) and increasing the manpower pool. I'd classify this as, oh, about a 4.
