Anyways, since I've been devoting far too little time and even less energy to class these days I've decided to cut back on EU and the forums (twitching from withdrawl), though since I enjoy writing something that isn't a paper I'll be continuing to update. Just don't look for a new AAR any time soon.
A side note, I HAD started a game for a new Ireland AAR, but after about ten years and three pages of notes the game crashed and I hadn't saved yet. (shrug)
Update, well, I may squeeze one off tomorrow night, or else this weekend, but who knows?

The Election of Margaret I
The process that resulted in the ascension of Margaret I was something of a comedy of errors. At first, the council of Regency attempted to follow the Norman tradition of Primogenitor. But with no male or female children, and the death of the last of the King's sisters, there was no obvious heir. A descision was made by the Council of Brehons that the sucession should be dettermined by elction, in the fashion of Gaelic Chiefdomships.
By tradition, the eligeble candidates were male realatives from the line as far back as five generations. But by limiting it to males, there were no candidates who were willing to give up their inheritances in other countries. The Northumberlands had married into many powerful noble families, and Irish law required that no one could hold office who held titles or lands in another country. Hence the top male prospects, like William of Austria and Sean of Aragon were out, as they were potential heirs to the thrones of their respective countries and unwilling to disinherit themselves.
So candidacy was opened up to include female candidates. But all of Patrick's neices were married- most of them to foreign nobles, or to powerful local chieftans who might try to rule through their wives.
So unmarried Margaret became the perfect choice. As a young woman, many thought she would be a puppet of the National Council. She was to relieve them of that notion quickly enough.

'Obviously, because the sucession of Margaret represented the decisive victory of the gaelic system of elective lords over the Norman one of Primogenetor. This is one of the defining moments in the emergence of Irish law as distinct from the rest of Europe. McElfresh, there's more to history than wars and batles.'

The confused McElfresh just gave the Professor a blank look. "Really? I hadn't noticed..." He hadn't meant it for humor, but the entire class broke out laughing, as the professor gave him another icy stare. What would he ever do with this kid?
Exams and papers have kept me off this for a while. At latest, there will be an update after my last exam on the 17th.
We're only a few monarchs away from the end of the AAR, but the next stretch, the reign of Margaret, Queen of Peace, should have some pretty interesting character development. After that, things get hairy, but enough foreshadowing for now.

Okay, its been quite a long time, even for me, so I feel I owe you an explanation.
My origional plan was to finish the AAR during these two weeks when I'm staying at my moms between going to visit family for Christmas and the opening of the dorms (jan14). However owing to the fact that I'm an idiot, and was not thinking ahead, I neglected to bring my notes with me when I left, not thinking that the dorms would be quite inaccessable when I got back.
No problem, right? just end this AAR where it is and start my planed new Ireland one, right? Well, you are forgetting the central point of the preceeding paragraph, that I am, in fact, an idiot. As such, I did not bring my EU2 cd with me for use during the two weeks during which I will have access to a computer and the internet but nothing to do.
I was half inclined to let this one slowly slide down the screen until it sailed away into the west, to the Island of Lost AARs, but I thought it's long-suffering fans deserved at least a few words

You're going to write an EU2 Ireland aar? *cheers* I can't wait to hear your take on Domestic policy now that it's quantifiable!
i'm certainly going to have fun with it, as well as the more rubust random events. I'm working on some of the preliminary 'story' part. My idea is to have a quasi-interactive AAR like Ariel's or Lord Durham's, with story interludes 'riffing' off the AAR.
