After I made a quick check here is the list of the historical lucky nations:
-Sweden
-Byzantine Empire
-Ottoman Empire
-France
-Austria
-Castille
-Portugal
-Muscovy

the list seems fine but it has a few odd ones...namely Sweden and Byzantine Empire...I understand that Byzantine was perhaps "lucky" when it survived till 1453 but it also has something to do with the fact that it was a strong country before their fall...but seriously Sweden...? Well...Paradox is a Swedish company...

Muscovy and Austria were definitely lucky, if you look at their history...and also Castille and Portugal, namely because they just happened to find a new continent while searching new trade routes

But IMO France doesnt need the luck tag as they are strong enough without it...England and Brandenburg could qualify for luck tag, since England had great success in Hundred Years War and also succesfull wars against Spanish Armada, Napoleon etc...and Brandenburg was a very small country in HRE but managed to become a major power by the 18th century

what do you think?

Well, Sweden did manage to get quite big in the 17th century. Only to lose everything in the 1700's mainly because of the man who's name I'm using. And this was achieved by a poor country with very limited manpower resources. Even with the lucky tag, AI's having a hard time recreating their achievements.

the Byzantines definitely need to go. They were annexed fifty years after the start, and besides that AI Byzantium manages to prosper way too much as it is.

Sweden is more questionable. They did become a great power for a century or two, but then, so did Denmark.

France, I think, should qualify as lucky, but game balance says otherwise.

I'm not sure if I would put Brandenburg in.

So the list could look something like this:

England
Muscovy/Russia
Austria
Castille/Spain
Portugal
Ottomans

These guys should be lucky all the way through, pretty much, though the Ottomans, Portugal, Spain, and Austria might justifiably lose it towards the end.

Some nations that might be lucky depending on when you start:
Persia, and whichever Koyunlu historically 'formed' them.
Manchu
Mughals, and maybe the Timurids just before 'forming' them. (I believe that's who does it?)
Netherlands
Sweden
Denmark
Rev. France
Brandenburg

Thinking of it, it would be really cool if they was a 'choose lucky nations' option.

well I guess Sweden's lucky tag is justified since they managed to win many wars against many countries (always Denmark, Russia and some other country against poor little Sweden :D)

Sweden was also lucky to have some excellent Kings...but if comparing to its neightbours, Sweden was much stronger than most of them (Russia was quite weak until Peter the Great) and managed to become a big fish by abusing her neightbours' weaknesses rather than being lucky

its same with France as France's population was much bigger than any other country's and was a major power during the whole of the game's timespan

but countries like Austria were without a doubt lucky (inheriting Burgundy, Spain, Bohemia etc)

Looking at what the nation achieved by 1820 compared to their starting position in 1399, I would rank the historical lucky nations as:
England/Great Britain (goes from minor power to #1 nation)
Castile/Spain (massive empire in New World, though arguably should lose lucky tag at some point)
Austria
Muscovy/Russia
Ottoman Empire (weak at start, grows to very respectable size)
Manchu (incredibly lucky to conquer Ming the way they did)

Other possibilities:
Brandenburg (as the other minor german power to become a contender, though clearly less lucky than Austria)
Netherlands - for forming at all :)
Portugal (for Brazilian empire and early trade success, but junior PU with Spain argues against)

IMO France's position in 1820 is quite predictable from their starting position with wealth and manpower of their core territories.
Unlucky nations would seem to include Poland/Lithuania and perhaps the Mamelukes.

Portugal is definitly a lucky nation. Read on the wars of Portugal vs Castille. We always beat them. Portugal wouldn't exist if it wasn't for it's luck.

Ottoman is too. They made a huge empire, huge!

France needs to be lucky if you want historical results otherwise it will never defeat burgandy. I think byz being lucky is random though it it is hardcoded as a historic lucky state its a bit silly.

Historical lucky are these...

1) If less than 8 lucky countries exists...
- if its before 1700
SPA, (if SPA doesn't exist, CAS)
TUR
- Pick RUS, if they don't exist, then MOS
- GBR, if they don't exist, then ENG
- FRA
- HAB
- If PRU has 7 or more provinces, then PRU
- If NED has 7 or more provinces, then NED
- if before 1700, pick POR
-if before 1750, pick SWE

so at a 1399 start, you'd get CAS, TUR, MOS, ENG, FRA, HAB, POR, SWE always.

if still <8 lucky, pick random ones until 8.

So, how come that BYZ end up lucky in the OP game ?

CAS, TUR, MOS, ENG, FRA, HAB, POR, SWE

is not under 8.

Or did one of them disappear and BYZ win the tag ? Something look weird. Except that the OP was playing one of the 8 ?

BTW BYZ look really like they got the lucky tag in my game...
