I decided to pick up Wallachia with the new patch mostly because of a growing fascination with Vlad III Țepeș/Dracula (better known as Vlad the Impaler) and the House of Drăculești. However, I was disappointed to see that it skips many rulers...

Vlad II Dracul's second and final stint as Volvode of Wallachia ended in 1447 and began in 1443.

He was succeeded by the son of Dan II, Vladislav II of the House of Dănești, this rule was supported by John Hunyadi, the Regent of Hungary.

Vladislav reigned for 1 year before being deposed by Vlad III Dracula, Vlad III reigned for a few months before being deposed by Vladislav II in that same year. Vladislav would reign for 8 years until 1456 ending with his final deposition by Vlad III who would himself reign until his second deposition in 1462 whereupon he was imprisoned in Hungary. By most historical analyses, it is believed this imprisonment lasted until 1470, although his effective confinement ended in 1466. Prior to his defeat and during his second and main reign, Vlad was most notable for the "Night Attack" where 15,000 Ottoman Turks were killed. This was in response to Sultan Mehmed II's invasion of Wallachia, this infuriated Mehmed so much that he conquered the entire Balkans peninsula.

Vlad was succeeded by his brother, Radu III cel Frumos from 1462 until 1473 where he was deposed by Basarab III Laiotă cel Bătrân who reigned for a brief period in 1473 where he was deposed by Radu who reigned until 1474 before Basarab was deposed again by Radu in 1474. Radu himself was deposed again by Basarab in 1474, who was himself again deposed by Radu in 1474. Radu reigned again until 1475. In 1475, Radu was once again deposed by Basarab.

In the period from 1456-1476, Wallachia was an Ottoman vassal state. It was only until Vlad III returned to power in 1476, that he would defeat the Ottomans and free Wallachia. Following his death, Besarab III assumed the office of Volvode for the 5th and final time from 1467-1477, he was succeeded by Basarab IV Țepeluș cel Tânăr who reigned until 1781, being deposed by Mircea, Vlad II's illegitimate son. Mircea was deposed by Vlad IV Călugărul who reigned briefly before being deposed by Basarab IV who reigned from 1481 until 1482, he was succeeded by Vlad IV who would reign from 1482 until 1495 who was succeeded by Radu IV cel Mare who reigned until 1508. Radu IV was succeeded by Mihnea I cel Rău who reigned from 1508 to 1509. Mihnea was succeeded by Mircea III who reigned from 1509 until 1510.

Anyway, before this continues ad nauseam, the main point I'd like to make is that the history of Eastern European states during the rise of the Ottomans has largely been brushed over and ignored. This is reflected in the simplification of the regnal history of a small state.

It was disappointing to see, to say the least, but it appears that only the major Western European states got a proper historical account in game.

I'm guessing that you tried to play another starting date in EU4 (not 1444)? Those are wildly inaccurate, in most cases. Even for Western European countries :)
Also don't forget that this is a product. And its main group of buyers comes from Western Europe and America. So the priority is on a relatively fun and complex depiction of events concerning those countries. For example, the first DLC was Conquest of Paradise, which caters to the American market (most players actually consider it to be one of the least valuable DLCs as far as content is concerned, when compared to the other EU4 DLCs).

If there's something which is really missing from EU4 it's the fact that guerilla warfare is ineffective/inexistent/impossible. There's are some things which somewhat mimic it, but those are only valid once you have 4+ provinces. So, basically, any country which is smaller than 4 provinces or so is almost doomed in AI hands (and quite hard to play for humans, as well).

I don't think EU4 can accurately model Vlad the Impaler's '20k impaled turks' defensive strategy against the Ottomans that well, it's one of the shortcomings of the game ;)

Just gotta use a little imagination. :) In my first 1444-1821 post AOW game I played as Wallachia-> Romania. I had the HRE as an ally who was engaged in a war against Spain. It was a buggy war where Spain was fully occupied but no peace deals were being negotiated. I was anxious to attack the Ottomans and the DOW screen said that the HRE would accept my CTA, but when I went through with it they didn't actually join the war. So I got stuck fighting a 150k Ottoman army with my 60k Romanian army. I had multiple +1 enemy attrition bonuses through national ideas, defensive ideas and a policy(I think?), as well as Offensive idea with Forced march. I used a high maneuver general to kite an Ottoman doomstack around while it was sieging me with smaller troop numbers. Eventually it sent the doomstack back to a friendly province to let it's troop numbers replenish which is when I went and smashed all of the siege troops. After a couple rounds of this I had whittled their numbers down enough that I was able to fight their doomstack and win, turning the war in my favor and sieging all their remaining provinces in the western balkans to win the war. :)

Hmmmm, yeah, I suppose there is no way of doing justice to the skirmishes against the Turks, but one of my biggest pet peeves was that the long-reigning rulers of Wallachia in-game gives one the impression that, aside from conquest by the Turks, Wallachia was a stable state. It was anything but as the struggle of Besarab and Radu would indicate.

@Mztr44: I haven't considered that strategy, I've been focussing on other smaller Eastern European states. I cozied up to Serbia (who are presently engaged in a war against Naples and Bosnia @_@) and I've been using my two diplomats to improve relations with Hungary and Serbia for an eventual war against Moldavia. The Ottomans are unifying mainland Turkey right now, so I have to be quick if I want Wallachia to remain an independent state.

It would be interesting if there was a mechanic that was added to represent captured soldiers though. Then maybe a Wallachian prince could execute them in a horrific manner. :3
