what would you imagine the actual gameplay difference between these:

armoured_recon_battalion
motorcycle_battalion
wheeled_recon_battalion
cavallery_battalion

would be in this case??

we'll clarify some of the rules in future diaries etc although its all moddable so you can pretty much script up any rules you want for mods for how the system works.

From your question you understand some of us want this for immersion, and the role within the division is the same. What would be is for what type of equipment they would get. If a unit is armored then it would auto get armored cars, wheeled would get jeeps, and so on without the players needing to assign them manually. It is very true we don't have the full picture yet.

And for most of us posting about this seems to mainly concerned with modding these things. I thank you for taking into account the modders as you make the game. We ask for things and have concerns before we have the full picture.

Not as part of the Division Planner template, but will a division be able to have their sub-units with names like 'SS-Gebirsjager-Regimrnt 13 "Artur Phleps"' & 'SS-Gebirsjager-Regimrnt 14 "Skanderbeg"', 'SS-Flak-Abteilung 7'? Or other types of subnames?

Lumping them all together in one division would make no sense, but I can see room for different types of recon battalions using different means of locomotion -- bikes, horses, motorcycles, armored cars, light tanks. Bikes and horses would be good for infantry divisions, as their speed will not slow down the division and they will not add fuel usage. Motorcycles are cool and we need them because, reasons. (Actually, they could be cheap recon units for mobile divisions.) AC and LARM recon are kinda duplicative, but LARM might fight better and cost more, etc. You also might have some LARM lying around after you upgrade to ARM.

Thanks for giving us a sneak peek and keeping options open for us who want to break your game:)

as for panzer_battalion, thats a frontline unit, so cant be placed in support.

these can though
anti_tank_battalion
engineering_battalion
anti_air_battalion

The various support battalions are mostly for the historical immersion and the actual gameplay will most likely be minor (as tommylotto pointed out in the post above). In the example I gave of the Prinz Eugen division I used Axis History for reference and the website uses German terminology for the OOB...

SS-Gebirgsjäger-Regiment 1
- 3x Gebirgsjäger Battaillon
SS-Gebirgsjäger-Regiment 2
- 3x Gebirgsjäger Battaillon
SS-Freiwilligen-Gebirgs-Artillerie-Regiment
- 1. Abteilung
- 2. Abteilung
- 3. Abteilung
- 4. Abteilung
SS-Freiwilligen-Gebirgs-Aufklärungs-Abteilung
SS-Kradschütz-Battaillon
SS-Panzer-Abteilung
SS-Panzerjäger-Abteilung
SS-Gebirgs-Pionier-Battaillon
SS-Gebirgs-Flak-Abteilung
SS-Radfahr-Battaillon
SS-Kavallerie-Abteilung

While translating the battalion names I may have gotten some of them wrong as I used Google translator and it is not perfect; ie, wheeled_recon_battalion

It's the variation in division structure that I find interesting. The SS divisions evolved (and many other organization) over the course of the war and replicating that change in game is worth the extra effort in creating a mod.

As for placing the panzer battalion in a support role. The Prinz Eugen division was mainly an anti-partisan unit in the Balkins and the tanks in the battalion were capture French tanks. In this sense I would suspect that this particular battalion would be a support unit. However, games rules will trump history and my future templates will be designed around those rules.

For reference, the actual OOB format looks like this:

it uses grid coordinates everywhere even though support is a single line

Code:
division_template = {
	name = "Infantry Division"

	regiments = {
		infantry = { x = 0 y = 0 }
		infantry = { x = 0 y = 1 }
		infantry = { x = 0 y = 2 }
        	infantry = { x = 1 y = 0 }
		infantry = { x = 1 y = 1 }
		infantry = { x = 1 y = 2 }
       		infantry = { x = 2 y = 0 }
		infantry = { x = 2 y = 1 }
		infantry = { x = 2 y = 2 }
	}

	support = {
        	engineer = { x = 0 y = 0 }
        	artillery = { x = 0 y = 1 }
	}
}
division_template = {
	name = "Panzer Division"

	regiments = {
		light_armor = { x = 0 y = 0 }
		light_armor = { x = 0 y = 1 }
        	light_armor = { x = 1 y = 0 }
		light_armor = { x = 1 y = 1 }
		motorized = { x = 2 y = 0 }
        	motorized = { x = 2 y = 1 }
	}
	support = {
        	recon = { x = 0 y = 0 }
        	engineer = { x = 0 y = 1 }
        	artillery = { x = 0 y = 2 }
	}
}

I see that engineer and artillery is the same in the infantry division and the panzer division. Does this means that, rather than having say, artillery and motorized artillery, the way the guns are tracked is considered to depend on the front-line units present?

What about assault guns the crews considered themselves artillery, but were often in the front like tanks. An what about at vehicles like marder would they be in only front line or more support. Which makes me think? Can you mix assault guns and anti tank vehicles in same battalion? Like if i wanted to add a stug company and a marder company to and infantry division?

PS so looking forward to game

It was answered before, you can't mix unit in the same bat (because, a bat is the basic unit), you can put any unit on regular bat position (front) but only some in support (Art, AT, Engineer, Recon...)

I'm quoting Pod here : "You can't put Panzer on support because they are front unit, but you can put AT on front, because, reason"

Assault gun, TD, AA may be available for both support or Front.
