I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread to provide historical data to modders, so that those interested can use them when the game is released in August.

As one recurring idea for expansion of the game's time period by modders in V1 was extending it to the early modern era, I am including information from the Renaissance on as well here. As thorough censuses only started becoming widespread in the 18th century, most of the numbers referring to preceding times are estimates; some of the sources here provided discuss how those estimates are done as well. Sources are provided in parenthesis after each entry.

I recommend checking out http://www.populstat.info/ as well, as it has a vast wealth of information, even for earlier periods (it has, for example, information on Estonia's population in 1200 and Portugal's in 1527); far too much information to be included here, in fact.

Andrelvis, while that info is interesting, as someone who has done a massive amount of modding in the past for Victoria 1, to put it delicately most of the info in your post is irrelevant. If you are going to mod population, army sizes and any of a whole host of items, you need much more specifics that just the overall population of Scandinavia in 1900. For population, you need as close to the year you start your mod in (1836 for the base game), and preferably data for the regions within those nations (you have 10 million in Scandinavia in 1900, but what does that break down to not only betwee Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland, but also the various regions within Sweden, etc).

The populstat website is indeed highly valuable, and is one of my major sources for population data, though even it needs to be used with a bit of care, as some of the numbers he cites come from sources that can be more than a little off. But as a starting point it's a great resource.

I think at this point it is probably putting the cart before the horse a bit to be focusing too much on modding resources as a point of discussion on the forum, though given that the game is not out for another 2-3 months I guess that is to be expected to a degree. It is going to take some time for everyone to learn the base mechanics of the game first, which is always the best thing to do before starting off on any modding project, unless it is something simple and even then spending some time playing the game first might give insights on how best to model certain elements that might not have appeared beforehand.

awesome work! i've been planning to mod vicky2 with an ambition toward making it a cool experience covering (1792-2092), so from the french revolutionary wars in pre-industrial world, through the victorian era into the 20th century and beyond in the current age. after reading through the dev diaries on certain features and improvements made on the original game i believe this is possible.

I understand, but I think it is relevant enough to provide a base for modders, specially the data for the early modern period, as one problem that was run into with the Elizabeth mod for Victoria was the lack of any sources on population; while most of the data I have put here is indeed for large regions, it should serve as a guideline so that the size of population in those areas is kept reasonable; in other words, while not enough to make a mod out of, I think these statistics can help.

The populstat website is indeed highly valuable, and is one of my major sources for population data, though even it needs to be used with a bit of care, as some of the numbers he cites come from sources that can be more than a little off. But as a starting point it's a great resource.

It is going to take some time for everyone to learn the base mechanics of the game first, which is always the best thing to do before starting off on any modding project, unless it is something simple and even then spending some time playing the game first might give insights on how best to model certain elements that might not have appeared beforehand.

That is true, though given the Dev Diaries up to now, I would guess that these kinds of statistics would be as relevant to V2 as they would be to V1.

I don't mean to rebuff your criticism, I appreciate it; but I think that, even if such data isn't very relevant, it's still relevant enough to help.

awesome work! i've been planning to mod vicky2 with an ambition toward making it a cool experience covering (1792-2092), so from the french revolutionary wars in pre-industrial world, through the victorian era into the 20th century and beyond in the current age. after reading through the dev diaries on certain features and improvements made on the original game i believe this is possible.

Thanks ;)

What are good places to look for historical population data? Simply because I want to try and work on the Southern African region for that. In Vicky that region was very poorly done (as usual for non-European areas), and I would like to see what I can do for it, while staying accurate.
